ARCHIVED Wheat Gluten And Chicken?
alamaz replied to ErraticBinxie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think the scarier part of this story is how we find out what they feed the animals that we eat....ew! in addition to how they treat the animals it's really a scary thing. -
ARCHIVED Contaminated Wheat Gluten Fed To Chickens
alamaz posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So my question is if manufacturers routinely feed an assortment of grains to livestock and poultry, how does the gluten/corn/soy residues & proteins then not get into the human system? Is it because the animal digests the ingredient first? There is an article on CNN.com today about it about how chickens were fed the tainted feed and now humans have ate... -
ARCHIVED Support Groups In South/southwest Suburbs Of Chicago
alamaz replied to pat e's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi pat e- are you close to Wheaton? The Whole Foods in Wheaton has a H-U-G-E support group (last I heard 750 strong). It's a once a month meeting which might not be so bad. Also, you might meet people closer to you or who can recommend something closer. I live up in Arlington Heights and go to the meetings at the Whole Foods in Palatine. Good luck... -
Still call ahead and still be vigilent when there. A dad in my local gluten-free took his family there and his youngest daughter who is a celiac orderd the gluten-free pancakes etc. and the server served her regular pancakes....not a good recipe for a fun Disney trip! That is the only bad thing I've ever heard about Disney though to be honest so I think it...

ARCHIVED Oddest Places That Have Gluten
alamaz replied to confused's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have to second the fish food. I just randomly read the label one morning thinking it would be safe and it was the third or fourth ingredient. Isn't it interesting that the government gives more subsidies to grain farmers than fruit and veggie farmers (atleast in the good ol' US of A)? Hmmm........ a conspiracy? -
ARCHIVED Colazal?
alamaz replied to KirstySF's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Can I ask why you were perscribed something? What do these meds. do for a celiac? Or were they perscribed for another condition? Amy -
ARCHIVED Ordering Tea At A Restauarant
alamaz posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Is it generally safe to order plain ice tea at the restaurants? I don't drink soda and am getting a little tired of water every time i go out. Are there any other "safe" beverages that a restaurant might carry? Thanks guys! Amy -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Italian In Chicagoland
alamaz replied to pnltbox27's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I've been there once and had the chicken marsala....and got sick! I also know one other celiac who got sick there also....I thought it was just a fluke. Whatever it was....stay away from the chicken marsala. I had the worse stomach pains afterwards! UGh! -
lack of short term memory. i had to call my husband and ask him what year we were married in - 2003 or 2004 (yes, we haven't been married very long). Atleast I could remember the date!

ARCHIVED Tired Of Getting Glutened
alamaz replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
soups are time consuming to make but my time saving trick is to buy frozen bags of veggies and throw it all in...that way there is minimal prep. and it tastes just as good! -

ARCHIVED Ingredients
alamaz replied to holdthegluten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
right now i can't handle nuts. my nutritionist told me to avoid nuts also as they are hard to digest but she said seeds are okay (pumpkin, sunflower etc.). Not sure on your other stuff but i think i read somewhere that mccormick products are all gluten-free -
pastas and crackers won't fill you up and keep you satisfied. you need to have some type of protein with your meals. a piece of meat, seeds, nut butters etc. also, right now i'm finding whole nuts to be harder to digest than the seeds (pumpkin, sunflower etc.). although it's shunned i feel soooooo much better when i have red meat 2-3 times a week. my body...

ARCHIVED First Trip gluten-free - Any Tips?
alamaz replied to alamaz's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
thanks. a small jar of peanut butter would work to put on apples and bananas. i didn't even think of that. i'm not able to eat lots of gluten-free baked goods right now so bread is not an option unfortunatley. maybe i'll take some rice cakes.....it looks like i'll have two suitcases- one with clothes and one with food! -
ARCHIVED Acne Breakouts On My Face And Back.
alamaz replied to Dman's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Are you eating soy? Soy makes me break out really bad. I can tolerate small amount of soy lecithin spaced out but any soy product causes me to have bad breakouts. You have to look for soy in vitamins, flours, margarines, candy bars and the obvious soy milk, tofu etc. I'd try eliminating soy first for about a month and see how it goes. -
I'm getting frustrated with myself for making mistakes and at myself for having this which - I know- it's not my fault - but I just hate it. I'm super stressed at work right now so the only time I'm home is to cook and then I'm racing back out the door and I'm taking my first gluten-free trip next week with the girls and I'm really contemplating canceling...

I'm back from my first gluten-free vacation and I have to say it went better than I anticipated. I traveled to Miami, FL and stayed at the Loews hotel on South Beach. The hotel is great and I was able to order lunch every day perfectly gluten free. On the menus they ask guests to inform servers of any food intolerences so they seemed to be aware of the various...

ARCHIVED Tired Of Getting Glutened
alamaz replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can't say enough about a crock pot. I make an extra meal on Sundays- usually a soup or some type of chicken breasts and that's what I eat for lunches that week or at least for the first couple of days and then freeze the rest for quick meals down the road. Crock pots are easy in that most recipies you throw it all in and turn it on. Since it takes all day... -
oh, i hear ya on the little things setting you off. just remember every one has good days and bad days and some times life goes through a rough patch. give yourself time and try not to pressure yourself into feeling better. it'll come with time and strict diet. just from my experience right now i am doing better if i limit myself to non-processed foods. fruits...

ARCHIVED Touching Wheat Products?
alamaz replied to isiskingdom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with Momma Goose - stop cooking two dinners My husband loves the meals we eat at home and if he wants his bread/pasta he goes out to a restaurant. if he does want a sandwhich at home he makes it and he cleans it all up. If that isn't an option for you, just want sure you wash your hands with soap and water before touching your food and/or licking... -
"brain fog" can be a symptom of being glutened. are you sure you are 100% gluten free without cross contamination? have you been tested for other diseases along with celiac? have you tried eliminating dairy and soy at all? have you had a gallbladder scan? not sure what type of right side pain you have. i've been diagnosed since late february and still...

ARCHIVED 40 Years Old, Ttc #1 gluten-free 3 Years
alamaz replied to Loribop22's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Klaya, I would get a second opinion about your husbands condition. Also, have the doctors performed antibody testing? Open Original Shared Link I know it says it's rare however the first test a nutritionist told me I should have is the anitbody testing if I'm not pregnant by the end of the year. It's supposedly not well received in the US but... -
I went from telling DH yesterday morning that yesterday was the first day since diagnosis that I actually felt good all over. No peripheral neuropathy, no fog, lots of energy, good mood. I ate lunch and when Dh went for an olive with his fingers after making his turkey wrap with regular tortillas I said "you can't do that" but then of course listened to him...

ARCHIVED Asymptomatic
alamaz replied to katbaloo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just as another perspective, growing up I thought I was normal and just like every one else and every one had the same issues I had. Now that I'm a diagnosed celiac after the symptoms got extreme in adulthood I can look back and see I was never "normal" I just never knew any different because I had never felt any different. I would say since you had a... -
ARCHIVED Once You Went gluten-free How Long Did It Take To Get Pregnant?
alamaz replied to janelyb's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I wanted to update my earlier response. I went to see a nutritionist today who specializes in gluten free/celiac disease diets. After giving me several supplements (but not any more than I was taking pre-diagnosis) she said if i'm not pregnant by june to come back to her. She also mentioned that when a woman is having fertility issues- whether it's miscarriages...
