  1. I actually went to Trader Joe's when someone mentioned on another post about their "cheetos." My son ate them and he did not get sick. He seems to get sick every time he eats a Frito-Lay product. It does bother me that many of their products are made on equipment shared with wheat, but hopefully they have better practices than Frito-Lay! Time will tell...
  2. What I am wondering is why people don't think Lactaid chewables/caplets are not safe when the company says there are no detectable levels of gluten in their products. I understand that is not the best statement to hear from a company, as it would be better if they would say it is gluten free. The ingredients are gluten free, and they take the time to test...
  3. My son has been gluten free for six months and his eczema has still not gone away. I tried to take him off of his medication, but the eczema came back. The only thing that works for him is Elidel (sp?).
  4. For mainstream cereals you want to stick to General Mills. All of the Pebbles cereals (cocoa, fruity & berry) are gluten free. Trix and Dora Stars are also gluten free. Safeway brand Cocoa Astros (cocoa puffs) are also gluten free. Other good cereals are Health Valley Crunch-em's, Erewhorn rice cereals & Envirokids cereals (not all are gluten...
  5. Frito-Lay products are a hit or miss. It seems like they have a high risk of cross contamination. I usually do not buy their products, but if my son is really having a Cheetos craving I will buy a small bag. I will try Trader Joe's or Whole Foods brand.
  6. Thanks for the recipes! They look fantastic.
  7. I too would go down there demand a copy, and tell the receptionist that if he won't see you, then you will make another appointment with another doctor to explain the results to you.
  8. 1. How often does your child get glutened? 2. How long do symptoms usually last? 3. Can you always identify where the gluten came from? 4. How do you help them through a glutening? 5. How long has your child been gluten-free? 1. Slightly every few weeks??? He's never gotten any gluten food, but I suspect cross contamination from mainstream...
  9. So far Kinnikinnick crusts are the only one that my family has liked. They are chewy, and they are a little sweet since they are made with sweet rice flour. To make mine crisp, I rub some olive oil on the pan before I pre-bake it. (I did not care for Gluten Free Pantry crust either.) Please share any pizza tips you may have!
  10. Yoplait is a general mills company, they will always list all gluten on the label.
  11. I was confused about why some containers say gluten free and others do not, so I called them. I was told that Yoplait will continue to list all gluten in the ingredients, they are General Mills company, and that some of the yogurts just don't have the "gluten free" label yet. According to them, even if the container does not have the gluten free label and...
  12. I saw on a post that Lactaid is not gluten free, but they say that there is no detectable amount of gluten in their product. This statement seems to indicate that perhaps they don't check up on each outside ingredient, but they test their product? Even if that is the case, I think that the fact that they test their product makes it just as safe as many...
  13. I like to use amaranth flour instead of rice flour. It is more nutritious than rice flour, and it does not have a strong taste. I actually like the taste it does have. I'm not sure about corn flour, but you should be able to replace it with just about anything.
  14. Update: The rolls turned out good. Of course, they tasted just like the bread. The rolls were a little dense, but if I had more time to let them rise after I formed the rolls it would have turned out better. They were still good though. I will make them for Thanksgiving.
  15. Funny, I've been thinking a lot about Thanksgiving lately. So much so, that I bought a small turkey and I'm cooking it today! I'm going to try making the famous gluten free flax bread recipe into rolls. I'm going to let my bread machine make the dough and maybe let it rise a bit, then quickly make the dough into balls, brush with come butter, put in...
  16. All Crayola products, except Playdough, are gluten free. So all the clays are gluten free. You can also buy gluten free playdough that comes in colors here: Open Original Shared Link
  17. I have one Calphalon pot and I love it! I bought one for me and one for my son's daycare provider when he first went gluten free. I don't remember how much I paid exactly, but I think it was $20+ for a little pot. Those pans are great, if you find them at a discount store buy all you can! (unless you live in Portland Oregon. )
  18. We live in SE Portland, and my son was diagnosed with celiac disease 6 months ago. We do not attend any meetings, although I am strongly considering joining a ROCK group. There is a blog devoted to gluten free living in the Portland metro area. I will post a link below. The page contains tons of useful information and also event information. We have...
  19. When my son was first diagnosed I bought the most expensive Clan Thompson list available. I never use it. I learned a couple of things from the lists in the beginning, but nothing that I could not have learned from making a few phone calls. The best way to shop for mainstream foods is to buy from good manufacturers that will disclose gluten on their labels...
  20. I would get your oldest blood tested right away before you take her off of gluten, and if you want to biopsy her then she will have to continue to eat gluten untill the procedure is complete. My son was a gluten junkie before he was diagnosed. He lived on crackers, cereal and pasta. Before diagnosis he would only eat the pasta or bread at dinner, and now...
  21. Please make sure the milk is very fresh. It is true that pasteurization kills good bacteria, but it also kills bad bacteria as well. Milk is a very desirable home for bacteria. They can flourish in it. Just make sure you know the source and the age of the milk.
  22. Sounds great. I love the crust recipe!
  23. All General Mills products, like Betty Crocker, will clearly disclose any form of gluten. As of 5/14/07 the only Duncan Hines frostings that are NOT gluten free are all the whipped varieties (the tall cans) and the regular/home style flavors butter cream and coconut pecan.
  24. We use Lactaid all the time. My son does have D some times that I could not explain. On the other hand, my son does eat quite a bit of processed foods. What am I supposed to do? Never give my son dairy? He eats dairy very often and he absolutely loves it. Yogurt and cheese are some of the few healthy snacks my son will eat. Maybe there's a store brand...
