ARCHIVED I'm Getting Gluten In Somewhere! Please Help!
JNBunnie1 replied to LoriG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If whatever test your doctor did showed you'd been having gluten, then your problem is not some other food. Diet variety is a great thing, but you may need to take your diet back to all fresh prep foods, prepared in an area your roommates don't use. Honestly, I ate rice pasta with meat sauce for two out of three meals for three months because I couldn't figure... -
ARCHIVED Kitchen Utensils - And Silicon
JNBunnie1 replied to DeerGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I thought gluten had to reach, like, 600 degrees to be dissolved. How does boiling make things safe? -
ARCHIVED Depressing Teeth Decay Problem
JNBunnie1 replied to Alternative mama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You know, I haven't had any cavities since I've been gluten free either. Not them I'm anywhere near as disciplined as you are with my food. I think there's more to cavity prevention than just removing sugar, but it sure seems to help a lot, doesn't it? I'm categorizing wheat(gluten) as sugar, because it becomes sugar so fast in your stomach. I think it... -
ARCHIVED Depressing Teeth Decay Problem
JNBunnie1 replied to Alternative mama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I did this when I had my wisdom teeth out, for the gum pain. I used herbal tea bags with mullein and cloves in them. It does help. I haven't tried it for actual tooth pain though, but it can't hurt. -
ARCHIVED Depressing Teeth Decay Problem
JNBunnie1 replied to Alternative mama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Also, Alternativemama, I just wanted to say I feel your pain. My Mum has all sorts of tooth problems, partly due to a sadistic dentist when she was a kid, and just had all her top teeth out. Ouch. And you're not working hard for nothing. It really is worth it. You might want to research alternative cavity fillings, instead of mercury amalgams, just for giggles... -
ARCHIVED Depressing Teeth Decay Problem
JNBunnie1 replied to Alternative mama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There was a dentist named Weston A Price in the 1930's who decided that the declining state of the teeth belonging to the children he treated didn't make any sense. He went wandering all over the world studying the diets of tribal and indigenous people in places like Africa, Alaska, the Swiss Alps, I forget all the places. The people he studied all had traditional... -
ARCHIVED Super Ez Guideline Help Please!
JNBunnie1 replied to Mom23boys's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You know, when I got sick ('activated' is a word I like), it had never once occurred to me that the food I eat is anything that could harm me nutritionally, or really what was in it. I never read an ingredient list. I just continued on my merry little Toaster Strudel way until I got sick and started searching for something, anything, that could make me better... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And Kinda Cranky
JNBunnie1 replied to TipTip's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would like to add- brownies and cake freeze very well. Splurge, buy a mix, most people like the Gluten Free Pantry or Pamela's, make them, eat two, freeze the rest. Trust me, they come in handy. -
You know, I used to sniff things a lot, and now, as time passes, it's getting to where the smell makes me nauseous. I think it's psychosomatic, but at least I'm less sad when walking down the bakery aisle. My sinuses used to behave badly at the slightest provocation as well, the longer I'm gluten free, the better my body behaves. I also don't have seasonal...

ARCHIVED Is Xanthan Gum Always Needed For Bread
JNBunnie1 replied to mamasaidso's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The flax meal prep is supposed to be an egg replacer, for the protein and gelling qualities that egs give. It doesn't really have the same 'attaching' effect that the gums do, though it would be better than nothing. I've made a number of successful baked goods, not bread but quick stuff, without xanthan gum, but it all calls for an inordinate amount of eggs... -
Egg yolks are good, that's where all the vitamins are. Yeah, next time have cake! Screw the hard roll. But seriously, try to take extra vitamins and drink lots of mint tea, but this too shall pass. It will probably take about as long as it did when you quit gluten to feel better, maybe less. And good for you, not listening to your doctor's BAD advice...

I actually have a friend who got so sensitive that even after brushing, gluten caught in her husband's salivary glands would still gluten her hours later. I hope that doesn't happen to me. But gluten can't magically appear in any other, um, 'stuff'.......

No problem, I was the one who started it anyway. And good for you with the group! -
ARCHIVED Help Me Convert This Receipe Please!
JNBunnie1 replied to Worriedtodeath's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ok, I feel better. -
See, I'd even freak about having it on my legs. It would get on my pants, then in my laundry basket, and blah blah blah..... What about 'gettin nekkid' with your significant other? Will it get all over them? I wouldn't use a lotion on my legs if my boyfriend couldn't appreciate the result, but that's just me. Every store I've ever been in had a different...

ARCHIVED How To Use White Bean Flour
JNBunnie1 replied to Gentleheart's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I personally have never been able to disguise the bitter bean aftertaste in flour. I think some people taste it and some don't, everyone's different. I don't mind it too much, but I definitly notice it. Can you have dairy? Maybe try using sour cream and a lot of garlic. -
ARCHIVED Allergen Free Bread/cake
JNBunnie1 replied to TBLKWL's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
These cookies are very good, they work better the smaller you make them. Like really small, but theyre cute bite-sized. You could also make chocolate biscuits out of this recipe from Roben Ryberg: Ingredients: 1/3 cup shortening -

But mamaw wasn't bumping. She was correcting a recipe I had asked her to correct. You don't get like, demerits or anything, do you? I don't really think that's fair. -
Sounds like it just needs extra protein, try powdered rice or egg protein.

ARCHIVED Pamela's Baking Mix For Cookies
JNBunnie1 replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've actually been learning a lot lately about the bad rap that saturated fats are getting. It's like back in the 50's, someone came up with two ideas. One: cholesterol clogs arteries. Two: clogged arteries cause heart attacks. If both of these things are true, then how come it's recently been proven that cholesterol lowering drugs do not reduce the risk... -
I like my homemade baked mac & cheese with milk and cheese and butter and rice noodles. Mmmmm.... I don't even like conventional mac & cheese anymore.

I wouldn't want the hassle, not when there are so many wonderful lotions out there. It's not like theres a limited selection. If you get really fed up, just apply a natural body oil after your shower. Less icky additives anyway.

ARCHIVED Gluten Has Now Affected My Marriage
JNBunnie1 replied to MrMark's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey, where'd the original poster go? I hope you're able to see all these wonderful responses! The cookbooks are a great idea, I actually don't like much of Bette Hagmans stuff, the newer ones like Annalise Roberts and Roben Ryberg are my faves. There's also a wonderful recipes section here on the forum, they are awesome people over there! -
Hope things turn out well. Even if you get tested right away and come up with a bunch of negatives, I would try the Gluten free diet anyway. It can't hurt!

ARCHIVED Accidental Glutening List
JNBunnie1 replied to kenlove's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's sad that we're forced to avoid people or change the things we say and do becuase our families can't or won't think logically. I'm not sure why food and the preparation of food for other people is such an emotional issue for so many. I love cooking for my boyfriend and friends, but I wouldnt enjoy it if something in my cooking made them sick. I would...
