  1. Steel pans s/b fine. They aren't porous. I've only ever heard of people having problems with some non-stick finishes and cast iron.
  2. Cruiser Bob, Sounds like everything's good at first glance. Did he take biopsies? Have they run an allergy series on you to see if there's other stuff that's a problem? Also, the shoulder pain could be affecting your sleep. That's all I can think of. It's funny but people that haven't had a colonoscopy think the procedure is the bad part. I...
  3. I get them at Whole Foods. Turmeric is a spice so if you don't have a problem with yellow mustard or curries (Indian or Chinese) then it shouldn't be an issue. I started on one caplet a day and worked up to 2, haven't needed to go to 3. As always, check with your doc to be certain. This is the stuff we get: Open Original Shared Link My doc tried...
  4. When I first went gluten-free, I heard from several Celiacs that they had CC issues with Arrowhead Mills so I've never really bought their products. But I can't give you a first hand experience of them.
  5. Ever since catching the flu a few years ago, my ability to taste sour milk has been iffy so my hubby does taste testing for me. Nice hubbys! :-)
  6. You need to look at a broader picture. You didn't just have salmon, how was it prepared? Use a spice mix or sauce on it? What pan did you prepare the salmon in (some have continuing reactions to non-stick or cast iron pans that were previously used to prepare gluten) What did you serve with it? Did you prepare the salmon on a wooden cutting board that...
  7. I think, for a newbie it's important to more cautious because at first it's easy to get gluten from unknown sources and a newbie is still healing. Probably the one product most discussed on this issue is Nut Thins because they are not made in a dedicated facility. Some people say they have a reaction every time they eat them, others (I'm in this group...
  8. Thanks! I'll try that next time. Hubby's already told me he wants a next time! :-)
  9. I'm 48, I've had arthritis for a long time because when I was a kid, they gave me large doses of steroids for what they thought was lupus (probably undiagnosed Celiac). I've found releif from the arthritis without NSAIDs by taking turmeric and fish oil. I've recently found out that the flax seed oil I take for other things might be helping too. This...
  10. Frequently nutritional sources from food are absorbed more easily than supplements. Check out this list: Food Sources of Magnesium Open Original Shared Link Maybe working more of these foods into your diet could help?
  11. I use enteric coated aspirin (very sparingly) or Naproxen (even more sparingly) for pain. I'd be very cautious about taking oral pain medication for abdominal pain because of the risk that the area hurting is also the area having to metabolize the pain killer. Taking aspirin for a bleeding ulcer is about the worst thing you can do and can become life threatening...
  12. I've had an EGD done twice while conscious. The first time, they gave me the sedative and because of my own personal medical issues, anesthesia doesn't sedate me like it does most people. They offered to try another day but we thought they were looking for colon cancer so I told them to go ahead and not wait. I was awake and gagging through the whole procedure...
  13. Just FYI, Wendy's baked potatos and chili is a mainstay of fast food for me. I've never had a problem so long as I remember to tell them not to put crackers in the bag.
  14. No, I buy mine at Whole Foods or Kroger. I love their lightly salted chips.
  15. My hubby had done 2 runs of antibiotic and still couldn't kick his sinus infection. What finally did the trick was a nasal rinse his doc recommended that he bought at Walgreens. It's gluten-free ad only contains sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate. NeilMed Sinus Rinse Complete Adult Kit Open Original Shared Link I notice they show a kit for children...
  16. By scoped, you mean endoscopy or colonscopy? My doc did a second EGD to make sure the small intestine was healing and there were no additional complications (other than Celiac which is complicated enough :-) My best advice with the horrid crap is to keep it as chilled as you can. Even though by the end of the jug, I'm always freezing because I've emptied...
  17. Clear broth and lots of jello should help with the hunger today. Tomorrow you'll want to sleep late because you'll be up most of the night tonight. Keep a good book in the bathroom and make sure you have enough toilet paper for a week (and moist wipes) because you'll go through it all tonight. By tomorrow morning, it'll feel like you've been using sandpaper...
  18. The MSG contained in two corndogs sent me into anaphallactic shock in my thirties and I've avoided it since. But that was an allergic reaction, not a Celiac reaction. I do know American MSG hits me much worse than Asian MSG does. I don't know what the difference is although my Asian friends tell me that they don't like American MSG because it tastes...
  19. At work, people put their food in the microwave without a cover and it pops all over the place. After being their maid for awhile and cleaning their mess, I finally just started putting a paper plate over my food to protect it from falling gluten. I'm assuming you don't have this problem with the microwave being at home, but then I remember life with...
  20. I'm assuming you're wanting to do the cake from scratch. But if you're looking for a good gluten-free white cake mix, the Authentic Foods vanilla cake is excellent. One package makes one 8 inch round layer, or 12 cupcakes. (Their lemon cake is great too) I tried the GFP yellow cake mix and I won't buy another of their cake mixes. I've never had a cake...
  21. You may have been a very thin guy because you weren't absorbing all of the calories in your food. Or, like my hubby, maybe when you hit 45, it hit back? :-) If you are eating a lot of gluten-free substitutes, they are generally higher in calories (and carbs) than their gluten containing counterparts. I took the following from the NutritionData site...
  22. I didn't particularly like Taco Bell pre-diagnosis and what I've heard about them post-diagnosis has definitely put them on my skip list. However, the Taco Bell Fat Free refried beans in a can in the grocery store are a staple at my house. Pity I can't count on the fast food spots to be as safe. When I want tacos, I go to Taco Cabana. They even...
  23. That's a good one I had forgotten. It would be almost impossible to get the colander completely clean of gluten from previous pasta. Also any wooden kitchen tools? I used to have a wooden spaghetti fork, haven't seen another like it since diagnosis. I didn't get the word about wooden implements and cutting boards until 6 months or so after the diagnosis...
  24. I saw this yesterday and thought it might be good to post it here.. Open Original Shared Link So I started wondering what a magnesium overdose would look like and some of the symptoms are things I hear Celiacs post about all the time (because of Celiac). So I thought I'd list it just so anyone taking over 300 mg of Magnesium could know what to watch...
  25. One of the drop-dead yummiest cookies I've made since going gluten-free was with Namaste Spice Cake mix. My (non-Celiac) office gang ate way too many of them during the holidays. Just follow package directions EXCEPT don't add the water it calls for. It makes a crispy cookie but I add walnuts and ground flax seed to mine for extra crunch (and fiber). ...
