  1. I think it could be magnesium, especially if you are low. Could you try several different forms of magnesium and see if any work better?
  2. Castor, you'll find the yogurt making info (for non-dairy versions) on www.pecanbread.com. Also, you might look for a pure acidophilus for the starter. Most yogurts/probiotics contain some ingredients that my LLMD says are really hard to digest. (Inulin, FOS, chickory, etc). I bought mine from Kirkman. Once you get a batch done, you can use that...
  3. It might be fun to post our plans for Thanksgiving menu. I know I need to give this some thought. I have been staying at a pretty low stage on the diet but now with adding in the magnesium again, am doing a lot better and more ready to experiment. Desserts: I've made pumpkin pie without the crust, and it was good though not quite sweet enough for...
  4. DMarie, I don't think you can predict what would happen if you start the diet then go off on Thanksgiving. I bet there is a recipe out there for SCD pecan pie though. I think ArtGirl's approach sounds like it will work for you. Actually, I jumped right in to the intro after reading BTVC because my doctor prescribed the diet (even got the book from...
  5. Juice is fine on SCD. You just have to confirm there is no added sugar.
  6. I've used it too, and it works great. You might do a search on the forum as there are some great tips about pastry. It is challenging to do as it is stickier than gluten pastry.
  7. Mike, thanks for the ideas. The problem is, I am overseas in Asia and none of those products are available. Local products list no ingredients and they cannot be traced by calling the company. That's why a testing option would be helpful for me. Looking forward to your tests, Shay.
  8. Prunes work better if they are boiled in water and softened. You might search the forum here as many people have posted their discoveries. Magnesium is needed for the intestine to contract. You may try taking an oral magnesium supplement. You can gradually increase until it is enough to help. Vitamin C can help as well. I have gotten a lot of help...
  9. Good advice here. I wonder if you have tried eliminating milk yet? The only other thought I have is that for some reason healing might be delayed, or that you have an imbalance of bacteria in your intestine or both. For me, after 15 months of gluten-free, 10 months of CF, and 12 months of SF, I finally found much more relief on the specific carbohydrate...
  10. Herx is short for herxheimer reaction. Refers to a flu-like, detoxing response to certain bacteria when they die. Lyme spirochetes cause this. While it is typical to be flu-like, you can get a lot of other symptoms. The response tends to be cyclic while on antibiotics. SCD is the specific carbohydrate diet. It eliminates carbohydrates that cannot...
  11. Dawn, My reactions were also rather random like that. Almost impossible to figure it out and very frustrating to figure out a diet. This has settled down quite a bit so far on SCD. I have more trouble with harder to digest foods. (Cashews are very hard to digest, btw). I can only guess at the reason. I suspect my leaky gut issues were being exacerbated...
  12. Nora this is quite interesting. Sounds a lot like some of what I have read about the bionic 880 results.
  13. Me too. I have been wondering what to do about that? I had weened off to taking IM magnesium, but the return of the big C has me back on lots of oral mag.
  14. Fantastic!!!!! I am so delighted to hear such good news and that you are able to focus your energies on all these other great things. Keep it up, Kass!
  15. Castor, there is a lot of interest in energetic medicine in the treatment of lyme. I think some of the best LLMDs are very integrative in their approach to medicine. Hope you find a route to treatment soon.
  16. Hi Scotty, I'm not sure about the symptoms you are having. Just a couple of thoughts: Abx can make you feel worse before you feel better. It took me 8 months on abx before I started to notice improvement. During that time, believe me we all questioned whether I should stick with the treatment. The fact that I seemed to clearly herx gave us hope...
  17. I've also had some trouble with reactions to foods at times and okay at other times. I think it is more consistent now on the SCD. Of course some problems were eliminated by the diet, and a few other things I know to avoid. But I do think that the diet has made a difference.
  18. Mike, I really appreciate your posting this. I also appreciate the skepticism and your willingness to do another test, Shay. I have been wishing for something like this. Mike, your experience with the orange peel was shocking; I knew about the possibility of problems with strawberries. While I agree that one can stick to whole foods (which I am pretty...
  19. Dawn, I think back in some of the earlier pages there are some instructions. I'll tell you how I do mine: I have a big pot that I use for a water bath. I put warm water in there, and over the top of a small hand-warmer. Your heating pad would work fine. Test the temperature for awhile to make sure it is in the desired range. (see www.pecanbread.com...
  20. Welcome DMarie. I think the answer to your question about how strict varies from one person to another. Elaine G, the author of the book, says absolute strictness, and in an email post I read she said it is because when people think they can have a little of this and that, that they tend to do that more and more and mess up the benefit of the diet. ...
  21. That's really good news. Give her my best. What a CUTE pix of your three, Andrea!
  22. I take it too, mine is Jarrow brand. (tested ok in ART) Sherry
  23. Carla, I appreciate your comment. I try to be discerning about that as well. Rachel, I think the MCS can improve for sure. My allergist told me in all his years he has seen no one completely recover, but it can become manageable. Sherry
  24. Gina, just curious, did you start with the SCD intro, or jump right in to the full diet?
  25. I agree about the Asian sources. They are very common in Asia. However, when I went to buy one recently in the USA they were much more expensive in the Asian store I checked. I bought mine at Target for about $30. It works great. I think most of them work very well, and in my opinion you don't need all the various settings for different rice as long...
