  1. If that should happen drive directly to your local police station and pull into a space that is reserved only for police cars. I did that one time when I was kidnapped by an acquantaince that turned out to be a violent rapist. I layed on the horn and within seconds an officer was running out the door and the rapist had fled into the night.
  2. I'm sorry that she is being so pushy with you about the PHD program. She should be proud of what you have accomplished, and likely is. Talking to others about the diet may have been her way of not only trying to help but perhaps even to understand a bit more about what you are going through. As more time goes by and you feel better then it will be your choice...
  3. It is processed using barley but there is no reg that it has to be on the label so they removed that info a long time ago.
  4. Part of it could be cultural but you need to firmly tell him to stop and tell him your husband is angry with you even if he isn't as he might understand that. Then do as others advised and ignore him or schedule your visits for times when he is not likely to be there. Also keep yourself well aware coming and going from the Y and keep your routine varied for...
  5. I would tell them thanks but no thanks unless they want to pay for it and do it for research purposes. Do not let them talk you out of the diet if you do have the test done but don't have the genes.
  6. I saw that and didn't appretiate it either. A better response from the snippy one might have been something like 'She wants to eat gluten free here! What does she want... to die?'
  7. I'm so sorry. I hope the doctors can figure out what is going on soon.
  8. Celiac is an antibody reaction so while gluten can't be absorbed through intact skin it can enter the system through open wounds, broken skin, the mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, mouth etc. in addition to anything that gets on your skin or hair can potentially get into your mouth. Conditioners and lotions are designed to leave a residue on your skin or...
  9. Are you going with mostly whole unprocessed foods? That will help prevent too many mistakes. Be sure to check all supplements and drugs with the maker but be aware that barley and wheat grass can be in a supplement and it will still say gluten free so read the whole label. When your antibodies start to go down and then you make a mistake or get CC'd that...
  10. There are a few companies that will clearly label gluten ingredients. With some of them a lot of their stuff is gluten free. Garneir is one example. I use their shampoos, conditioners, skin products etc. Dove and Suave will clearly label. Shikai, Giovanni and Himalaya are organics that also label clearly. Himalaya even has gluten free on the bottles of their...
  11. This is a great thread to resurrect. I am grateful for my new little four legged freind who has helped heal my heart and makes me go for long walks every day and more importantly laugh. I am grateful that I feel good enough to work every week as a volunteer and the freindships I have made there. I am grateful my furnace worked when I had to turn it on...
  12. Yea buckwheat is safe for us. Are you new to the diet? If so did you use a toaster that had been used for gluten foods to toast the waffles? That or shared butter with gluten eaters would be enough to 'get' you.
  13. I have had an MS workup. First they should test your B12 levels if those haven't already been done because low b12 can cause issues like your having. I had an MRI first which showed white lesions very similiar to the lesions found with MS but not in quite the right places. They then did a spinal tap looking for a particular type of debris found with MS...
  14. Did they put you on any new meds after the surgery and if so did you check with the maker to be sure they were gluten free? Surgeries can also have the effect of worsening our symptoms like any other stressor. If that is the case with you perhaps you are more sensitive to CC than before? Just a couple guesses. I hope your feeling better soon.
  15. Get a Cornish Game Hen and stuff it and bake it at home and bring it with you along with some veggies and other sides and just zap it. I would never trust anyone to cook a gluten-free meal for me in a gluten filled kitchen. Also even though you are dairy free you could well tolerate butter. If you are worried about casien then you may be able to find ghee...
  16. The question would make an interesting research project for her. She could write to the dietary depts' head at a few prisons and see what their response is. I would think you would get quite a variety of different responses from different states and their local jails. For me both hospitals and the penal system would be scarey places to have to be.
  17. Are there other things he will eat for snacks for a bit? The reason I ask is being newly diagnosed he may not care for the gluten free replacements right away. Your liable to get a real yuckkk response at first if they are too similiar to the gluten ones in appearance but not in taste. If he is new to the diet he may also be a bit moodier than normal for...
  18. Give it a good three months or so. Go with as much whole food as you can, meats, chicken, eggs, rice, potatos, veggies, beans, fruits are all gluten free in their natural state. Gluten free food is going to be food without wheat, rye, barley or oats. Here in the states we have gluten free food in both grocery and in health food stores. You may want to ask...
  19. Yes please do. My pick would be the spider or the Headless Horseman.
  20. I had DH for most of my life and it would at times go away and than come back. Late in the disease process it was there all the time. After the initial healing when you go gluten free usually it only appears when glutened or, especially early on, when injesting iodine.
  21. Do get on the diet strictly as you have nothing to lose now but the pain. Sometimes we have to take our health into our own hands when the doctors fail us. If gluten is an issue your family will come around when they see how much better you are doing.
  22. I hope your GI took lots of biopsies. The reason they do biopsies is because at times the damage can not be seen except under a microscope as villi are very tiny. It isn't unusual for us to have GERD while on gluten as problems with gluten can cause inflammation problems. Now is when you give the diet a good strict try. You don't have to wait for the biopsy...
  23. False negatives on biopsies are really common. Your rash does look an awful lot like DH. Since you plan on 'spurging' with gluten now and then that should tell you if it is DH. It may take a couple days after injestion for the rash to occur or it could happen very quickly. So keep a record of when you cheat on the diet and watch for a recurrance of the rash...
  24. You do have to be actively consuming gluten for the antibody tests to have a chance of showing positive. For the blood work you need to go back on gluten. Your health practioner should have tested you before telling you to go gluten free. However if you find relief from the gluten free diet then you have the answer as to whether you need it or not. It...
  25. I could be wrong but since the diet is a medical need, like insulin for a diabetic, they would have to make an attempt to feed the diagnosed inmate gluten free. The food would likely be very boring and I doubt most places would be very knowledgeable about CC. Interestingly in one country, sorry I don't recall which one, they did an experiement with a prison...
