ARCHIVED Maintaining Some (Small) Tolerance
ravenwoodglass replied to Jeff In San Diego's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree but this can take some time so be very strict at first and after you are well healed, and this may take a year or two depending on how ill you were to begin with, you may find you are reacting less violently to cross contamination. -
ARCHIVED Shampoos And Conditioners.
ravenwoodglass replied to charleeirene's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Dove, Suave and Garneir will clearly label gluten ingredients. I use Garneir products for shampoos, conditioners and skin care. Shikai and Giovanni will also label clearly and there is a new brand called Himilaya that puts a gluten free label right on the front of their safe products. There are gluten free makeups if you go to the search bar at the top of... -
Magnum Ice Cream
ravenwoodglass replied to bridgetm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If I see the words wheat in the ingredients personally I avoid the item. -
ARCHIVED Did I Make This Up?
ravenwoodglass replied to cait's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No your not imagining feeling better. It does take some time to heal and after we have been gluten free for a bit a glutening can be more severe and take longer to get over. No matter what the results are of the biopsy and or blood tests do give the diet a good strict go for at least a month or two. -
ARCHIVED Help! Two Son Whom Do Not Care
ravenwoodglass replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There is nothing you can do about the son who lives with his mother and abuses drugs and alcohol. What foods does your son usually eat? Many foods are naturally gluten free like chicken, meat, fruits, veggies etc. You could try to concentrate on those rather than the specialty gluten free foods. If you tell us what his diet is usually like we might be... -
ARCHIVED My School Doesn't Understand
ravenwoodglass replied to CourtneyLee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Can't you simply refuse to eat the prepared food or maybe take a small amount and toss it or just let it sit untouched. Perhaps a note from your doctor or parents about the risks of cross contamination also might help. -
ARCHIVED Maintaining Some (Small) Tolerance
ravenwoodglass replied to Jeff In San Diego's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Celiac/gluten intolerace is autoimmune. Our bodies produce antibodies when glutened. When we get glutened the antibodies 'flare' which is what causes the symptoms. It is our bodies way of trying to protect us from something it recognizes is toxic. I really don't think that there is a way to maintain or build a tolerance. Some do become less symptomatic... -
ARCHIVED Curious About Correlations
ravenwoodglass replied to milkmommy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The whole food diet we speak of is simply food in it's natural form. Meat, chicken, fish, eggs, veggies and fruits, potatos and rice etc. that are not processed or premade. If stuff is in it's natural form when we cook it then the risk of cross contamination from food processing is pretty low. Do make sure you have changed out stuff like your toaster, wooden... -
ARCHIVED Do You Think I Got 'glutened'?
ravenwoodglass replied to AussieAmanda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes. For example with myself neuro symptoms hit pretty quick but the D takes about 3 days. Some will get an upset stomach or other symptoms within hours of injestion but some can take up to a week to react. That is why when we do elimination diets we are supposed to add the new foods in one at a time and for a week straight before deciding we are okay with... -
ARCHIVED Glutened By Maalox!?!?!
ravenwoodglass replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree. The spicey food may just be too much for your system just yet. Best to stick with whole foods for a bit and the fewer ingredients to start the better. A chicken breast or steak with a side of mashed or baked fresh potatoes is going to be better than something with a lot of ingredients that is spicey. When new to the diet home cooked whole foods... -
ARCHIVED Do You Think I Got 'glutened'?
ravenwoodglass replied to AussieAmanda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Could be. You may get D in the next day or two. Eating at food courts without gluten free menus is always risky. Better to bring a snack in your bag or eat before you leave. -
ARCHIVED Yogurt And Peanut Butter
ravenwoodglass replied to divamomma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yoplait is the yogurt I go with also. You should also be able to find Udi's bread pretty easily. Are you going to Disney? If you are know they are a very gluten free friendly place. Have a great trip. -
ARCHIVED Grrr. Evil Gluten
ravenwoodglass replied to Chad Sines's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If the digestive enzymes are giving you issues with reflux drop them. Not all of us need to use them. The same applies to probiotics. -
ARCHIVED Glutened By Maalox!?!?!
ravenwoodglass replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also go with name brand Pepto Bismal liquid, it works fast to stop the pain and for me usually in one dose. -
ARCHIVED Teeth Cleaning
ravenwoodglass replied to mbrookes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I appretiate your post, you didn't make any blanket statements and it is good that your periodontist office is good enough to check. Better to err on the side of caution than to make us sick. My dentist checks everything also and I appretiate them doing it. While we do keep dentists in business it is surprising how many are clueless about celiac. Mine have... -
If the levels are below 500 or if the second test was lower than the first it might still be a good idea to try the sublinguals. It can take quite a while from when our bodies stop being able to utilize B12 until it shows in blood work. My neuro thought mine were fine also because they were right at the old cut off which was 250. That has been raised to ...

ARCHIVED Could My Job Make Me Sick?
ravenwoodglass replied to MissBonnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is really not going to be safe for you. You could check and see if there are any training programs available to you. People that have to change occupations due to illness are sometimes able to get free training. Check with your local Employment office to see if they know of any. -
ARCHIVED Interesting Article
ravenwoodglass replied to superfob's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
"The researchers are now planning to investigate exactly how that signaling is initiated and acts in the brain, and whether it might be possible to develop new ways to treat depression and anxiety in humans." There is quite a bit of research into celiac causing depression and anxiety. Hopefully these researchers are checking out the research that has been... -
ARCHIVED Leg Cramps
ravenwoodglass replied to sherrylynn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was also told to take quinine. Check with the doctor but I think mine told me it is present in tonic water. -
ARCHIVED Test Results On Kids
ravenwoodglass replied to momtojzsh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your little girl sounds like me as a child. My family thought I was weird cause I would eat the candles off a birthday cake but not the cake. Do know that if she is eating a low gluten diet her tests will run a greater risk of false negatives. And false negatives with little ones are not uncommon even if they are on a full gluten diet. Since you are celiac... -
ARCHIVED I Did A Really Dumb Thing And Drank Some Beer.. So Sick
ravenwoodglass replied to asickdaddy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You need to get some gluten free food in the house. It doesn't have to be speicaly food. Lunch meat, canned tuna, potatos, rice, canned or frozen veggies, Dinty Moore beef stew, Chex cereal, fresh or canned plain fruit, Delmonte fruit cups etc. While drinking that beer was not a good thing to do at least now you know better than to do that again. Quite... -
ARCHIVED Test Results On Kids
ravenwoodglass replied to momtojzsh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If the IGA tests, 54 and 79, were total IGA that is pretty low. Do you have the reference ranges? If those were the antigliadin IGA then that would be a pretty high result. If their total IGA is low that can cause a false negative. If the kids seem to have symptoms, either GI or behavioral or growth do give the diet a good strict try as false negatives on... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Ataxia?
ravenwoodglass replied to meeegun's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do give the diet a good strict try even if those panels have a negative result. People with mostly neuro symptoms instead of gut problems have an even higher rate of false negatives from what I have seen. -
ARCHIVED Banana's N Jello >:o
ravenwoodglass replied to Newtoitall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I noticed in your sig that you are also intolerant of soy. Most McCains frys do have soy in them. Another possiblity is you just don't tolerate bananas. Perhaps avoid them for a bit and then try again. If your new to the diet the more whole food you can go with the better. Perhaps slice some fresh potatoes put some fresh herbs on them and toss with a bit...
