ARCHIVED You Should Stop Calling Gluten Intolerance A Disease
ravenwoodglass replied to motif's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am not motif but in some ways I agree. If I had been diagnosed with celiac when I first had symptoms as a child there is a lot in my signature that would not be there. While I don't think being gluten free prevents the development of all diseases in the general population, I do think that those of us with undiagnsed celiac develop a lot more problems than... -

ARCHIVED I Do Not Believe My Doctor.
ravenwoodglass replied to Janelee63's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, gluten free of course. I eat it all the time along with burgers and bagels and pizza and the rare cookie or cake. -

				ARCHIVED Rolaids, Tums, ?
ravenwoodglass replied to gflooser's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is true. I don't have to use it more than once so haven't had that issue. I use for the stomach pain I get the first day after a glutening. It also shouldn't be used by folks that are sensitive to asprin, and as with every drug when used by someone who is pregnant the doctor should be consulted before taking. -

ARCHIVED You Should Stop Calling Gluten Intolerance A Disease
ravenwoodglass replied to motif's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I actually consider celiac and gluten intolerance to be a genetic 'difference' rather than a disease. The disease aspect comes about by ignoring that difference. -

ARCHIVED Gluten-Like Symptoms After Consuming Sugar
ravenwoodglass replied to bridgetm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You mentioned artificial sugar, did you mean a sugar alcohol diet sugar replacement? Many people have problems with them. Products will even say on some labels that consuming in excess can cause D. -

				ARCHIVED Microscopic Colitis
ravenwoodglass replied to scootRN's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you have a rash that you think is DH head to your dermatologist. A biopsy of the area NEXT TO the lesion can pick up the antibodies. A diagnosis of DH is a diagnosis of celiac and no more testing is needed. You do have to have active lesions and do make sure to tell the derm that DH is what you are looking for. After you are done with testing do give... -

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Been Through This?
ravenwoodglass replied to littlestephie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have to agree about the ready made Carnation Instant breakfast. I have consumed the powder mix without issues, just not the chocolate malt. By drinking the ready made stuff you may be defeating the purpose of drinking it if you are trying to gain weight. The gluten in it may be preventing you from absorbing what you need. If you can handle the soy go with... -

ARCHIVED What Changes Happen After Diagnosis?
ravenwoodglass replied to happylittlemama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The changes for the better, oh gosh, what can I say! My signature says a lot but the changes go so far beyond what is there. It was like a miracle. I became a different person. Part of that, of course, was not living in constant pain but I am just so much more relaxed in so many ways. It is like I am me again. When I first got hit with celiac in childhood... -

				ARCHIVED Rolaids, Tums, ?
ravenwoodglass replied to gflooser's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You may be surprised and not have the heartburn issue this time. Each pregancy is different. What works well for me is Pepto Bismal liquid. I know not all Tums are safe and hopefully someone else will have some ideas for those and the Rolaids. -

				ARCHIVED Interpretation Of Results
ravenwoodglass replied to mommyto3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well I consider them to both be the same things with different names. You know you need to be gluten free, call yourself whatever you are comfortable with. -
Posts like these make me so sad and so mad. My DS was diagnosed with failure to thrive at a year. He had dropped from the 65th percentile at birth to the -10. He weighed at a year 2 lbs more than his sister did at birth. They tested him for everything but celiac. Both of my kids were sick their entire childhoods and the ped said that they both didn't like...

ARCHIVED New To Celiacs...do Doctors Really Understand This Disease?
ravenwoodglass replied to BlaBarb's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome to the family. No doctors don't understand celiac or the multiple systems it can impact. You are lucky in the respect that you have had a positive biopsy and you know you have at least one of the recognized associated genes. Heaven help those of us who show up negative on blood work and have one of the less recognized celiac associated genes. Like... -

				Gluten In Gyro Meat?
ravenwoodglass replied to durhamgrrl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It amazes me how common it is in Gyro's to put gluten in the meat. It is done for the sole purpose of 'stretching' the meat. IMHO it is shameful. I was head chef in a restuarant that served Middle Eastern food. We Never Ever added any gluten ingredients to our gyro meat. It is really easy to make, it is made and baked like a meat loaf and then sliced. Once... -

				ARCHIVED Antibody Levels
ravenwoodglass replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would get antibodies rechecked at 6 months and then if they are still elevated it might be appropriate to rebiopsy in case you are someone who has 'silent' celiac to make sure that damage is being repaired. IMHO rechecking at this point is too soon. -
It does sound like you may be eating something that you are intolerant to. Intolerance reactions can be delayed reactions. What do you usually eat for breakfast? Have you eliminated soy and dairy, including milk replacements that may contain casien? It must be frustrating for you I hope you figure out the issue and it resolves soon.

ravenwoodglass replied to Mr.GF's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You have a really great doctor! Too bad he can't be cloned. -

				ARCHIVED Glutino Crackers
ravenwoodglass replied to Tina B's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That annoys me also but bear in mind that if they change into that type of packaging the price will likely go up. Either people or a new machine will need to put them into the sleeves and they will need to either make or purchase the sleeves themselves which would then still need to go into another foil or plastic pouch before going into the box. -

				ARCHIVED Testing A Gluten-Free Diet
ravenwoodglass replied to katboy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There are a couple downsides to trying the diet for a month and then going back on gluten for a month before seeing the specialist. One of the biggest is that it may mess up your chances of getting a positive on the testing. Even if you keep eating gluten until testing you still have a chance of a false negative. It is not uncommon for some of us to have... -

				ARCHIVED Frustrated - Want Confirmation!
ravenwoodglass replied to mbon's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes they really should. As my GI told me after I had finally been diagnosed, after being misdiagnosed by him repeatedly and listening to him apologize over and over "You would have been one of those celiac diagnosed by autopsy" Unfortunately that is likely all too common. -

				ARCHIVED Movie Theater Popcorn
ravenwoodglass replied to Julz33's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You might find you get a better answer by going in early or on a slow day. What I did at my local theater was go in to a matinee when the theater was very slow, I got there early and asked to see the stuff they use to pop the corn. They had no problem grabbing the tub and showing it to me. It looked okay so I risked it, without the fake butter stuff, and... -

				ARCHIVED Frustrated - Want Confirmation!
ravenwoodglass replied to mbon's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Raven here LOL Trust your body. Even a short time gluten free can effect the tests and some of us, like myself, don't show up positive on blood work even when almost dead. Childbirth is a common trigger for celiac in women. Having the symptoms show up after having a baby is not unusual. You have found a great place for info and support. There are... -

ARCHIVED Why Do Fools Fall In Love?
ravenwoodglass replied to kaki-clam's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
This relationship sounds like it is tearing you up. Break it off and tell him to come see you when he has his divorce papers in hand. If he does you know he loves you, if he doesn't then he may just be using his current marriage statis to avoid a deeper relationship. Who knows perhaps when your not involved with him the right, single and available man will... -

				ARCHIVED I'm So Confused...please Help
ravenwoodglass replied to mamarie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
One more note to add to what the others said, you did make sure the med is gluten free right? Either the pharmacist or preferably the maker can tell you. -

				ARCHIVED Contradicting Results
ravenwoodglass replied to missceliac2010's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am very thankful for you that the doctor said... "but that the last time he did an upper GI test on me (in November), the biopsy was borderline positive for celiac disease!" That experience with not getting test results is why many here encourage folks to get hard copies of all test results. You don't need an appointment to get them and you have a legal... -
