  1. I always ask to have my glass rinsed well before a place makes my drink. I may be overly paranoid but as a bartender in a few smaller bars we had a 3 well system. The first well was soapy water, the second was clear rinse water and the third one had something called 'Sanitabs' that the glasses were put in to soak. This was long before I was diagnosed celiac...
  2. Yes it appears that you are one of us. Welcome to the board and please feel free to ask any questions you need to. Even more important read as much as you can. The gluten free life involves a lot more than reading labels unfortunately.
  3. That does sound good I'll have to see if I can find it. I like Kinnickinnicks Italian bread. It has a good texture to it and doesn't crumble like some of the others I have tried.
  4. A Sunrise is tequila, orange juice and grenedine. You can also order a Virgin Sunrise which would be orange juice and grenedine with no tequila. Another light drink would be a sloe gin fizz. That is sloe gin (very light weight alcohol) mixed with Sprite. A very pretty pink drink and the only thing my Mom ever drank. Do go with a top shelf Amaretto,...
  5. You have got to stop eating at that restaurant or insist that your food be made in a seperate clean pan at the very least. You are IMHO getting CC from these meals. Skip the 'gluten free' restaurant meals as even though what you are ordering is gluten-free, or should be, it sounds like they're not. How are you getting your eggs? If you are getting them scrambled...
  6. Have you done a strict trial of the diet? If you haven't you should.
  7. With the great response to the diet and the positive blood test I would stay gluten free and not look back. You have 22 ft of small intestine and damage can be patchy and get missed. IMHO your doctor is one who is going to torture you until you are damaged enough to make him happy to diagnose. Some doctors would diagnose you based on your blood work and the...
  8. Ditto. Also try to go with as much unprocessed food as you can and make sure you are checking all your meds both script and OTC.
  9. Hopefully it's not liver disease. As you can see from my sig I have experienced that in my own family. If your not jaundiced I would try not to worry about it too much though if possible. It sounds like your doctor is trying to be helpful. You may also have more than one thing going on and I know how frustrating it is to feel sick and not get any answers...
  10. The horrible life sucking depression that I dealt with off and on since childhood finally went 'off' forever within a short time gluten-free. The only time I am clinically depressed now is when I am glutened. Doctors had tried all kinds of antidepressants but they all made me worse not better. I did develop severe anxiety especially after I went gluten...
  11. If your in the US almost all the bottled wine coolers are malt liqour. I usually order a 'real' wine cooler. I ask for 1/2 wine and 1/2 Sprite or 7UP. A glass of just wine is also good. Rum and Coke made with a clear unflavored rum, add a lime slice if you like. Tequila is a safe choice so perhaps a tequila sunrise. A very pretty drink. A Daquri (sp) would...
  12. I had forgotten you mentioned that before. I hope everything goes well with the scope and that they can figure out what is going on.
  13. I hope you issues resolve or that they find out what is going on. However with this "The tests he ordered said my liver was fine but I had a positive transglutaminase." I have a feeling you will eventually be back.
  14. First off mention the asthmatic symptoms to your doctor. You may have a true allergy to wheat in addition to celiac. If that is the case your doctor might want to have you carry an Epi-pen. Unfortunately there isn't much that we can do once the gluten reaction starts. I find Pepto Bismal helps with the stomach pain I get and I take for sure gluten-free asprin...
  15. I was thinking the same thing. It is very important that you not take him gluten free yet. Wait until the day he has the biopsy then go right from the procedure to a gluten free diet. I would also let other family members know that with his positive blood work it is really pretty certain that he is celiac so they should be tested also.
  16. While the effects are the same pernicious anemia and celiac related B12 deficits are different. When you have PA the body lacks the ability to produce the intrinsic factor. That is likely permanent. With celiac the area of the intestine that produces intrinsic factor is damaged. Once that area heals many of us are able to absorb and utilize B12 again. It...
  17. Except for 'the most extensive' diverticuli the doctor had ever seen my colonscopys came back normal prediagnosis. At the time I had suffered from daily explosive D for 15 years with the last 5 also including 3 hour painful bouts every night. It was more painful than having a ten lbs baby was. Of course my doctor was to ill-informed to even bother with doing...
  18. Have you had standard blood tests for celiac yet? A full panel would include a total IGA, that would let you know if the testing had a good chance of being a false negative. I think your doctor would also do the IGG test in the panel. Sometimes if the person is IGA deficient that test will still show a positive. If you have symptoms I would do as they advise...
  19. Hi Scott, Thanks for posting and the link. All too often I don't think to check and see what is new on the home page. Your recent postings with links to the page are great and it is appretiated.
  20. If they happen to use a barley product in the broth, as you have noted, it does not have to be declared. Have you called them and asked what is in the broth?
  21. If she was diagnosed through blood tests it is pretty certain that she is celiac. It sounds like she has DH. An option to the endoscopy which does have a chance of a false negative, would be having a celiac savvy dermatologist do a biopsy of the skin next to her lesions. If she has DH that would be a firm diagnosis of celiac and the endoscopic exam would...
  22. In the US if the modified food starch is from wheat it it is required by the FDA to state that it is.
  23. Have yout tried Pepto Bismal liquid? That usually works great for me on the occasions that I get glutened. Even better is figuring out what is giving you pain and avoiding it. A food log can sometimes help.
  24. It sounds like you have a great hubby there. Hopefully you won't run into the GI freind too often. You also seem to have lucked out with the Ped. A wise one there who has the best interests of your son in mind. Talk to your husband about the 'jokes' and let him know they hurt your feelings. Maybe make a firm rule that every time he jokes about ordering...
  25. I am sorry you are having such awful issues. Your pharmacist is making sure the prednisone is gluten-free right? I know gluten causes inflammation in us, that's what the 'itis' stands for. Could it cause inflammation in the heart? I really don't know for sure. I hope this resolves for you soon.
