ARCHIVED Enterolab Results - Need Help
ravenwoodglass replied to misulli's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is a strong indicator and it also means that each of your parents carries at least one copy of the gene. The genes are considered to be recognized main celiac genes, as Enterolab says. Whether you are a full blown celiac or still in the stage where you are considered gluten intolerant is really not important. You need to be just as strict no matter... -
ARCHIVED Fibromyalgia
ravenwoodglass replied to floridagrl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am going to be short and simple, I never in a million years expected my celiac diagnosis to relieve my fibro and arthritis. Both have been in total remission since less than six months after I went gluten free. After over 40 years of living with daily pain and now going on 5 years pain free, totally. -
ARCHIVED Please Say Prayers Or Send Good Thoughts For My Dad
ravenwoodglass replied to Glutenfreefamily's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks for the update, I was wondering how he was doing. I hope you all don't beat yourselves up about the decision to do the surgery, it sounds like he was suffering from the knee issue for a long time. We have no way of knowing that things like this are going to happen. I am continueing my prayers of course and hope he is able to come home soon. -
ARCHIVED Foudn A Gluten-free Vodka
ravenwoodglass replied to Krysten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many celiacs can tolerate gluten grain distilled alcohols and vinagers but many can not. The only way to know if you can or not is to challenge the alcohol when you are totally symptom free. There are some celiac organizations that do not agree that distilled grains are safe, the Celiac Sprue Association is one. Open Original Shared Link Alcoholic... -
ARCHIVED Rice Dream
ravenwoodglass replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ya gotta love a government that tells companies how much poison they can hide and not declare in an item. The reason the company changed labels and can get away with it is because our wonderful FDA has determined that they can so. Do write to the FDA and Rice Dream about this. Letting them know how sick this item makes us is the only way to get this regulation... -
Call and ask to speak directly to the head chef. He or she may need to call you back but that is the best person to speak with. If the chef seems cooperative and understanding then tell him you will also call to remind him of your restrictions the morning of the event. I would also make sure that the chef knows what the manager said. In the restaurant...

ARCHIVED Wegman's Is Awesome!
ravenwoodglass replied to FlourShopGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Being an area with lot's of Wegmans was one of the deciding factors in having my DS move back closer to home. Made Mom really, really happy. I do hope they keep expanding Westward and Southward. If they ever get as far as Arizona a move would be really tempting. I really like their new Rice Milk, now if they would just get Kinnickinick stuff I would... -
I do agree heartedly with this. Also there can be unexpected effects from the sedation, some of those being really dangerous or just really unpleasent. I am not going to go into details but I had a very tough time during and recoving from a 'routine' endo and colonoscopy due to unexpected side effects with the anesthesia. If you do decide to do an endo...

ARCHIVED Grrr... Aldi
ravenwoodglass replied to pugluver31902's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would donate the stuff to my local food pantry, after I piled it all up on a table took a picture and sent it to aldi's corporate headquaters telling them why I would not be buying any of those items there again. -
ARCHIVED Wegman's Is Awesome!
ravenwoodglass replied to FlourShopGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No bigger of a fan than I !!!!!!! They are the best. They are one company that I can know for sure, for certain that CC is not an issue. I sometimes forget that they are not national, in particular when I speak of shopping as not being hard. If I were ever to relocate it would have to be somewhere that has a Wegmans. -
ARCHIVED I'm Confused About All The Bs
ravenwoodglass replied to gdobson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Made a real big difference for me also. Glad you are having good quick results. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed - Cross-contamination Worries
ravenwoodglass replied to Waldz1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There are restaurants that are quite celiac savvy. Some even have gluten free menus, those are the ones you can trust the most. My family eats at PF Changs frequently along with Outback Steakhouse and Legal Seafood (don't know if there is one of those in NYC) . There are others. One of the key things to do in a regular restaurant is to tell them that... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results - Need Help
ravenwoodglass replied to misulli's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Boy would he!!!!!! What really made a believer out of my family was my recovery. I have gotten the same 'ugh, okay' reaction after testing 5 years later for soy and casien. Since I am not obviously on my death bed like I was before gluten these intolerances don't get much 'respect'. My recovery from gluten did lead the rest of my family to be tested. ... -

Prayers and hugs heading your way. I hope this resolves quickly. -
ARCHIVED Number 17 Positive Or What
ravenwoodglass replied to Jeano's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you have a postive blood test that does confirm that gluten is poison to you. If you are choosing to also have a biopsy done, and that is your choice, you will need to continue eating gluten until after the biopsy. If you are not going to have a biopsy done then you can go ahead and start your healing. No matter what the results of the biopsy are you... -
First this is only my personal opinion, I would go with the dietary results. Biopsies are hit and miss, especially in young children and they also have a high rate of false negatives in blood testing. The true test is how she responds to the diet. If you feel you need to have a doctors official diagnosis then you may feel you need to have this done, it...

It can take a while to heal, but think how long it took you to get to the condition you are presently in. I have had what I consider a miraculous return to health, but it didn't happen over night. Some issues may resolve sooner than others, for me GI stuff cleared up pretty quick but the arthritis and other autoimmune problems took longer. Don't give...

I'll have to look for this stuff. Thanks for the heads up. -
ARCHIVED Fell Off The Wagon
ravenwoodglass replied to Muzz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The gluten free diet may very well help. One thing I know for sure is that in Turkey my 'gluten intolerant' gene is deemed one for psoriasis. My DD had a large patch on her elbow that she had for years that did go away after a couple months on the diet. You have nothing to lose by giving it a shot. -
ARCHIVED Eating Well Does Not Have To Be A Lot Of Work!
ravenwoodglass replied to home-based-mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I so agree. One of my favorites is a couple cans of diced tomatoes, or a gluten-free stock and whatever frozen veggies I have, add one or two different kinds of beans and you have a meal in a bowl. With different spices the variations and flavors are endless. And time for prep is about 5 minutes, on a slow day. I have also found tin foil to be a real... -
ARCHIVED Iodine? And Rash Getting Worse
ravenwoodglass replied to fedora's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I have, well had, really severe DH. I have been gluten-free now for about 5 years. In the beginning I would get an outbreak from iodine in my vitamins. I had to change brands. However after about a year or so I was able to add them back in without any more problems. You may want to stop the vitamins for a bit and then if you still have doubt you could... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Question: How Long Glutening Before Blood Test?
ravenwoodglass replied to huevo-no-bueno's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Be aware that there are many reasons for false negatives on the blood tests, and biopsy as well. It sounds like you have had a positive reaction to a gluten challenge. There are doctors that will confirm your diagnosis based on that. I also hope they can get you in for a biopsy asap, it is pretty clear gluten is toxic to you. -
You need to simply listen to your body. I have bolded the most important part of your query. You have come to the right place, IMHO. Read as much as you can here and ask any questions you need to. I might suggest looking into Enterolab and testing for additional antibodies to soy, casien (milk protein), egg, and yeast. To try and help heal you may...

ARCHIVED Need Some Help/opinions?
ravenwoodglass replied to oldskool's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
This does sound a lot like DH. Not all dermatologists are real familiar with it. Mine was diagnsoed as 12 month a year poison ivy for my entire childhood. A savvy dermatolagist can biopsy the area next to an active lesion for a positive diagnosis of DH. It is a good idea to perhaps see a GI, do not go gluten free until after you have done all the testing... -
ARCHIVED Malabsorption Question - Should I Crush My Supplements?
ravenwoodglass replied to LoriG's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It would be easiest, safest and best to get a for sure gluten-free liquid. Do not crush those tablets without calling the maker first. Many are made to dissolve at specific rates or in a specific place in your digestive system. Medication or supplements should never be split or crushed without checking to make sure it is safe. Many that have special...
