  1. Hi Connie, one thing that may uplift you just a little bit- While gluten-free food is expensive after a year on the diet my DH was doing our taxes and adding up our med expenses. The year before I was finally diagnsoed we spent 17 thousand dollars on copay for doctors, testing and drugs. The year after I was diagnosed we spent less than a thousand and...
  2. I was tested for allergies right before the allergist put me on the elimination diet. I was tested for 99 substances and showed up allergic to 98, everything except beech trees and they don't make for an interesting diet. The allergist said my immune system was in hyperdrive and that since gluten was in every tissue in my body, or at least the antibodies...
  3. I think the answer is in the sentence above. I would contact the company, return any unused product and find a gluten free bread that is made is a dedicated facility. Kinnikinnick makes some good gluten-free bread and other baked goods. Have you tried them?
  4. I was cllose to death by the time I was diagnosed, if I can heal so can you. It does take a while and it does take ferreting out all possible gluten sources but you can recover. I have not come back 100% neurologically but otherwise after almost 6 years on the diet I am pretty much better than I had been since childhood. The thing that helped me heal the...
  5. Do NOT trust those blood tests. Do a gluten free trial for all of you for at least 3 months. If you read my signature you will see why I think this is so important. I have two children who are gifted. They both struggled a great deal but my DS the most. He has a lot of Aspergers features and his IQ when tested by a child psychologist at about 9 was...
  6. I had to smile when I read the response about mirrors- my DS asked me a bit ago why all my mirrors are hung to high for anyone to see themselves in. My face aged 20 years in the last 5 of my diagnosis and that combined with oozing DH sores made me really not like mirrors. I didn't realize I had prevented anyone else from seeing in them though. Hang...
  7. It used to last a few days for me. Fortunately for me good old pepto bismal liquid now takes care of it and the pain on the first dose and it doesn't usually come back. I don't know if you have tried pepto but if not perhaps it might help.
  8. I have no idea if that was the case for you. Hives are a histamine reaction and they usually show up soon after consumption of the offending allergen. One way to find out if it is a problem is to eliminate it for a little while, at least till the hives clear up for a couple days and then add it back in and see if you break out again. However before you...
  9. Did you make the sushi? I wonder if you got CC'd from it. Perhaps not from the ingredients but from the making. A lot of us also have other intolerances. I get hives also but I get them from soy, I get blisters from gluten. Have you greatly increased the amount of soy you are consuming? It took me a while to figure out the soy, which was confirmed by...
  10. With all the flour drifting around in one of these shops even if the cocoa itself is gluten free it most likely won't be by the time you get it. Please use a great deal of caution if you decide to try it. Personally I wouldn't touch anything from there.
  11. I agree stongly with the previous posts. I was only gluten free for about 3 months when my GI demanded a week long gluten challenge for biopsy. The challenge almost killed me with a severe GI bleed. I got my diagnosis without the biopsy because I was on the bathroom floor in extreme pain and bleeding freely from my rectum on the day of the biopsy. It...
  12. I would try the diet but give it a good 3 months before you give up. The neuro symptoms do seem to take a bit of time to resolve. It may help a bit to give him a good gluten free B12 sublingual, that will help the nerve function in the brain repair a bit sooner. I have a feeling you will find yourself dealing with a totally different kid after a month...
  13. Brian you took the words right out of my mouth. The genetic research into celiac is in it's infancy, not all the genes are recognized. If I had relied on blood tests and gene tests for diagnosis I would be dead by now. I didn't have my genes tested until I had been gluten-free for almost 4 years. I did it because my DD was gene tested and came back negative...
  14. I wonder if we should print out and send this to the AMA, Congress and the head of every major medical facility and school? So many stories of so much pain, so many dollars spent, lives stunted and cut short, I wonder if they would listen.
  15. It is hard at first and as stated there is a greiving process to it all. I just want to say good for you for getting through it this time without caving into the desire. You'll get through this, don't feel bad about feeling bad sometimes. If you can reward yourself for being strong, it doesn't have to be much, it doesn't even need to be something material...
  16. I think St Peter will meet him at the gate, say welcome and all present will get ready for some lively conversations.
  17. Hi Jason, I have found something that seems to help me a great deal when I am dealing with C. It is sweet potatoes. I don't know why they seem to help regulate so well, I do know they are an 'ancient' oriental medicine 'cure' for C and D. If you like them try adding them to your diet, they seem to be rather soothing also. It can take a while to heal...
  18. I was celiac since childhood but not dianosed until 5 years ago at 45. For me the celiac came first, appearing as DH and ataxia and nerve issues in childhood. Diabetes was diagnosed 2 years ago but since I have such good blood sugar control, as in normal ranges - unless glutened, I consider myself prediabetic (if that).
  19. Yes this is normal. It will go away but it may make some situations difficult when it is present. I feel so hopeless and scared when this happens, but telling myself it is the gluten not the world around me helps me to cope. I hope it goes away quickly for you.
  20. Have you tried the diet yet? I suffered horrible migraines for years, even when I didn't have the headache I had the auras, I have not had one since I went gluten free..... except when I am glutened. This was one of the first issues to resolve for me, I hope the same follows for you.
  21. Lisa, Did they do any blood work on you? There are routine blood tests that would be done as a first step in diagnosing gallbladder problems. If they did these tests and the results were in normal ranges they may not feel the need to ultrasound again as according to your signature they did an abdominal ultrasound back in Sept. Here is a list of the blood...
  22. I think a lot of us experience this. Your body may still be recovering from years of nutrient lack. As long as you are not having any issues I would try not to worry about it and just eat good, naturally gluten free food. If however you are still having digestion issues this could be a sign that you have another intolerance. The most common secondary...
  23. I am so sorry about your Mom and Dad. It sounds like you are under a lot of stress right now. Please don't beat yourself up over this, your body is doing that enough for you. I haven't done this with gluten but I have with my casein issue. Sometimes I just get into this mindset, usually when depressed, that it just isn't fair. So much has been taken...
  24. Pancreatin is a supplement you can get at either the drug or natural food store. It contains amylase, protease and lipase. These help to digest (break down) carbs and proteins and fats. They also help you absorb the nutrients from your foods a bit better. I took just those for a couple of months but now take a product form NOW called Super Enzymes that...
  25. Will be thinking of you, hope all goes well.
