  1. I wanted to add just a quick note about apples. Most are coated with a lacto resin to help keep them fresh. IF you are sensitive to lactose you may react to the apple coating. If you are not dairy sensitive then the peels may just be too much for your system to digest. When your up to it you might want to experiment and see if they are more digestable...
  2. I get severe C when soy manages to sneak in. In addition to the great advice already given what helps me very quickly is a meal of sweet potatoes, I usually cut them up and boil them then when done I stick them in a saute pan and drizzle some honey or sugar over them to coat. Things usually move smoothly the next morning and I get some extra vitamin A...
  3. I agree with Ken, composting would be the best way to deal with this. I would still wear gloves also when using the compost, but then many do think I go overboard. MY Mom's voice still rings... Better safe than sorry.
  4. One thing that is important to keep in mind with the gene testing is that gene knowledge is in it's infancy. At this point there are only two genes recognized in the US as celiac genes but there are some of us who have developed full blown celaic with the 'intolerant' genes. In my instance the main difference between being celiac and being gluten intolerant...
  5. I am glad you are going to try the diet. Gastritis is a common finding for us. My GI was really not pleased when I went back after mine and gave him back all his pricey samples and told him I used pepto bismal, once. He looked at me like I was nuts but as soon as I went on the diet the stomach pain ended. Note that I am not telling you not to take the...
  6. When I had my shop I put a big sign on the door that stated NO FOOD IN SHOP. Folks that ignored the sign, and it only happened once, were told to leave. No exceptions. There is no way to get around the dirtiness of money except diligence, gloves would help but I found them hard to work with at times. My hands are really small and most are too loose...
  7. With everything you have had going on you certainly don't need more stress. ((((((((HUGS)))))))) I hope the roommate situation gets resolved soon. I also agree that if you can a medical leave of absence from school might be the way to go if you can. I know that might be disappointing but you want to be able to do your best and with all the health problems...
  8. Wegmans has never let me down, also Kinnickinnick, Bakery on Main, and Ener-g (although my sensitivity to soy means I can't eat their really good saltines anymore )
  9. Knowing what I do now I only wish someone had even looked into this for my children. It the kids are forming antibodies they are having a reaction. You don't form antibodies without one. That antibody reaction may or may not have been present long enough to cause what most doctors would recognize as celiac symptoms. Which are IMHO present at the end stage...
  10. Okay that doctor takes the award for stupidity. At least my Rheumy actually thought to test me for celiac. Too bad I don't show up in blood work. Perhaps this doctor is more worried that if he actually diagnoses folks they won't need HIM anymore and his bottom line will go down. After all folks with celiac related arthritis usually go into complete remission...
  11. I also would use extreme caution when trying this. Make sure you are not consuming any risky stuff and that you are feeling well. Then have a couple slices for 3 or 4 days in a row to make sure you are not reacting. Some of us can tolerate oats and some of us can't. Also be sure to double check the other ingredients in the item, sometimes things get...
  12. Some of us do react to distilled gluten grains. My family is in that group. I had a lot of mystery glutening until we figured that out because of course almost everywhere you are told that we can tolerate. You may also be someone who does not tolerate gltuen grains in any form. There are some companies that use only corn or wood derived distilled vinager...
  13. I have to agree if you are celiac gluten is always going to be a poison to you. There are times when folks are diagnosed and have healed and they may seem to be able to tolerate it again for a while. This is one of the reasons they used to think children grew out of celiac. I think it is called a 'honeymoon' period. It can take time for the antibody effects...
  14. Patti, Thanks for the heads up. Sometimes I wish I was a chemist.
  15. I use philosphy 'Hope in a Jar' and 'When Hope is Not Enough' I also use one of Burt's Bees facial cremes. I have called and checked both for gluten and for soy. You mention squinting because you are nearsighted, have you gotten your eyes checked to see if you need a new prescription? That would be the best preventative.
  16. False negatives are certainly not unheard of. Up to 30% of us with full blown celiac will come back negative on testing. I am one of those. I just wish the doctors had told me what the panel was and given me a chance to try the diet before I was almost dead. They just kept blood testing for 15 years and telling me to be glad the tests were negative, yea...
  17. Have you checked all meds and supplements? Have you eliminated it from toiletries and non food sources? My pet foods and art supplies got me off and on for a couple of years till I learned. Do you consume many mainstream products from companies 'gluten-free' lists? Many are CC'd and the companies have no requirement to tell us about it. For some of us...
  18. Having UC with celiac is certainly not unheard of. In some of us celiac causes this. Has your doctor tested for celiac? If you want doctor confirmation call and check if he has done the blood work and ask him to order it if he hasn't. Many will want to do a endo for confirmation although the test can rule it in but not rule it out, read false negatives...
  19. If you are in an area that has a Wegmans, they are not national but all over the upper east coast, they label all their gluten free food. If you are near one they will make finding something easy. Also look for any 'natural' or 'health' food stores where you are. They should have some safe choices for you. In regular stores see if you can find some of...
  20. I felt like both crying and slapping them when I read your post. I don't have any solutions for you, I sure do wish I did. All I can offer is ((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))) and prayers that they wake up soon.
  21. I am so sorry for your furry freind. It is so very hard to deal with their pain, it is not like you can explain to them what is going on. Just on the off chance it might help are you feeding him gluten free food? Perhaps that might help, if gluten can mess up our nervous systems it can also mess up a dogs if he is sensitive to it and gluten is in most...
  22. I have, my signature is very telling. In doing some research after I got my genes tested (5 years after my diagnosis) I found that the gene I carry is considered a RA gene here in the US. In Eastern medicine it is a recognized celiac gene. My arthritis has been in COMPLETE remission now for almost 5 years. I never in a million years expected anything...
  23. Wonderful news! It took a month or two for my other pain to resolve and hopefully you will also get some relief. I'll never forget the first time I ran up the stairs about 2 months after I started the diet. I didn't even realize I did it till I got to the top. My DD found me crying at the top step. Just a couple months before that I couldn't even walk...
  24. I would eliminate the dairy for a little while. Also raw veggies can be very hard on a compromised system. For the first few months gluten-free a salad with lettuce would make me feel really awful. I hope you feel better soon and as much as we don't like to have other things taken away it may be needed until you heal a bit more. It sounds like you...
  25. I use acupuncture, acupressure and some oriental food healing methods. I find them quite sucessful. My most recent experience is with a tooth that had gotten a abcess, I am in the process of finding a dentist so I have been dealing with discomfort here for a couple of months. I started using acupressure a couple of weeks ago to deal with the pain. I don...
