ARCHIVED Did I Do Everything In The Wrong Order Already?
ravenwoodglass replied to Dru's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The elimination diet was how I was diagnosed after years of false negative blood tests. It is a very valid way of diagnosing us. The only thing I don't agree with is the need to poison yourself for months so they can get a maybe positive biopsy, if they hit the right spot and manage to do it correctly. I also agree that I would do wheat next, in the form... -
You have gotten some great advice so I am just going to chime in with the fact that you can still have pizza and beer, just not the kind loaded with poison. Kinnikinnick and Glutino both make good pizza crusts and Kinnikinnick makes some very 'gluten like' gluten-free bread. There is also mainstream gluten-free beer, Redbridge by the folks who make bud...

ARCHIVED Can You Have Dh As A Child, But Not As An Adult?
ravenwoodglass replied to ArtGirl's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I do agree that the presentation can change. As a child my extremeties were covered in oozing blisters that left scars still visible 40 years later. It was thought to be poison ivy and I went through 7 years of the most painful allergy injections possible with no relief other than when I would get a short course of prednisone. The blisters lessened in... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Df Sf Margarine Wanted
ravenwoodglass replied to F.deSales's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks so much for posting this, I was wondering about ghee. I will have to see if I can find it locally or dive into my cookbooks to see if I can make it myself. -
Doctors are looking for the reason why so many people with gut problems also suffer from depression and other psychological problems. The answer IMHO is not that there is some magical link between them but the fact that celiac has a neurotoxic effect on the brain, if our country would get it's head out the pharmacopia and actully test everyone for celiac...

RSM, Those meds should NOT be giving you D!!!!! You need to check with your pharmacey asap to make sure they are gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Celiac In The Military?
ravenwoodglass replied to Leonidas's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Unless things have changed recently celiac is not a condition that the military can deal with and it will be a reason for a medical discharge. I would not attempt to hide this diagnosis as that could lead you into real problems down the line if it is discovered that you had been diagnosed and have not told anyone. There is a possibility that they may allow... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Df Sf Margarine Wanted
ravenwoodglass replied to F.deSales's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I sure do wish someone would post one but I don't think it is going to happen. I finally gave up looking after reading many, many, many labels and have started using first pressed xtra virgin olive oil. Haven't tried it yet with cinnamon sugar but great with plain pizza crusts or cebe bread. -
ARCHIVED Is Flourless Sprouted Whole Grain Bread Ok?
ravenwoodglass replied to Melzee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As stated that bread is not safe, the one bread company I have found that has a bread with the same texture as the poison stuff is Kinnikinnick. They can be ordered from on line and some stores may be able to stock it for you. They have an italian white and a brown rice that are really good as well as pizza crusts and oreo type cookies that you can actually... -
Alex you have a right to be angry and do not denigrate yourself or your feelings. Many of us had had the realization that our loved ones might still be with us or that our lives might not have been forever restricted if the medical community was not quite so drug oriented and actually looked for the cause of the problems rather than just treating the...

ARCHIVED Burning In Chest After Egd

How are you doing? I hope you got to the doctor okay and that you have improved. -
ARCHIVED Info On Kroger Distilled White Vinegar
ravenwoodglass replied to ginghamkim's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for posting that. I am one who reacts very strongly to distlilled gluten grains and alcohols. The dietian is correct, many of us will not have a problem but for some of us it is an issue. The only way I know of to tell if you react or not is to challenge the item when you know everything else you are eating that week is safe. -
ARCHIVED Burning In Chest After Egd
ravenwoodglass replied to tmk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had that also, in my case it was because they glutened me during the procedure. If it is severe you should call your doctor and let him know about it. If you can take pepto bismal (name brand) I took that and it helped a lot. -
ARCHIVED Did Your Hair Fall Out?
ravenwoodglass replied to libbyann's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, in my case I think it is autoimmune related. Even now 5 years gluten-free if I get glutened or use a hair care product with gluten it will fall out again. It only lasts a couple days now though before the falling stops. My DH had alopeica areata, also autoimmune related where the hair falls out and leaves round bald patches. If he gets a dose dose... -
ARCHIVED Ridiculously Depressed
ravenwoodglass replied to Walter S's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Walter, I am glad you checked back with us but sorry you are having to live under this cloud. Depression is often a very prominent feature of celiac and for those of us who suffer from it can be one of the most debilitating issues to do with the disease. There are a couple things you need to do ASAP, first check every med you are on for gluten, also... -
ARCHIVED Klondike Triple Chocolate
ravenwoodglass replied to hapy4dolphins's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The suspect items in this are the natural and artificial flavors, however, these are a Unilever product and they are usually really good about labeling. I don't know how long your DD has been gluten-free, if it has not been long you may want to cut dairy for a bit. It can help the gut heal faster and many find they can add it back in after a couple of months... -
ARCHIVED My Daughter Had Her Endoscopy Today
ravenwoodglass replied to Elaine40's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree that they can't usually tell by the naked eye. The damage is visible on biopsy though IF they have biopsied the correct spot and the lab knows what they are doing. With a strong family history of gluten problems it would be a good idea to try the diet for a bit strictly and see if her problems resolve. Dietary response is always the truest test... -
ARCHIVED Rice Dream
ravenwoodglass replied to olalisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Isn't our government wonderful to tell us how much poison we can legally injest without recourse to the company that poisoned us or even the priviledge of knowing that the product can make us sick. I may be wrong but I expect all those wonderful cereals like rice crispies and corn flakes etc will soon carry a gluten free label also and the barley malt that... -
ARCHIVED After Being Glutened What Types Of Food Do U Eat?
ravenwoodglass replied to Aligray's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I buy the Pocono brand at either my local health food store or at wegmans. It is certified organic and is grown and packaged by a company in Penn Yan NY about 20 miles from where I live. The company that makes it also makes some other great buckwheat products including a kasha that is great as a replacement for bulgar wheat in tabollah (sp). The companies... -
ARCHIVED After Being Glutened What Types Of Food Do U Eat?
ravenwoodglass replied to Aligray's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I eat buckwheat hot cereal, so much like cream of wheat it is scarey, with cinnamon and a bit of sugar. It is real high in digestable protein for a cereal and quite soothing. Yogurt if you can tolerate it is also good, it helps to get the good bacteria back in balance. I also make real sure I am taking my sublingual B12, drink lots of water and get as... -
ARCHIVED Grahm Flour
ravenwoodglass replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just a quick note, Kinnikinnick has a gluten-free 'graham' cracker sort of stuff to use for pie crusts etc. I haven't tried it but someone told me about it recently. You may want to check their web site for more info on it. If it is as good as their pizza crusts it is well worth giving a try. -
ARCHIVED Insurance Question
ravenwoodglass replied to miles2go's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You need to contact the drug company, many have programs that can supply meds free or at lower cost. If the patent is about to run out on this drug you may also find it becomes much less expensive when they start marketing generic versions, however you need to check carefully if you do switch to generics as they can have different binders from the name brands... -
ARCHIVED Blurred/double Vision In One Eye?
ravenwoodglass replied to Joni63's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You should make an appointment with your eye doctor, you should have gone back when the other glasses were not right. On occasion the company that makes the lenses will make a mistake in the prescription and this would have been made right if you had returned them quickly. You have not been gluten-free very long, it does take a bit of time to heal. You... -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Tell Me The Bad Cosmetic/toiletry Items?
ravenwoodglass replied to amberleigh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It does seem like it would be easier but the list of products to be avoided is long and often companies will have one or two products we can use and a bunch that we can't. Some companies are really good at labeling, some are not. At present cosmetics, toiletries and drugs do not fall under the allergin disclosure guidelines that food does so we can't really... -
ARCHIVED Had Egd Today
ravenwoodglass replied to tmk's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The simple answer is yes, you can have a 'normal' looking small intestine to the eye and still have gluten related damage. For many the damage from celiac is on a microscopic level and they really need to get a look at the biopsies. Some will also hear that they have 'preceliac changes' but are not YET celiac. Also don't forget that biopsies are hit and...
