ARCHIVED Is Shampoo Safe?
ravenwoodglass replied to JessieFree's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Your not being paranoid and yes you do need to use a shampoo, conditioner, makeup and soaps etc. that are gluten free. Dove will clearly label gluten ingredients like wheat and oats. Suave will also. Most of the Giovanni product line is safe also. -
ARCHIVED Following Up With Specialist....
ravenwoodglass replied to LoveBeingATwin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My regular doctor at 6 months did follow up blood work checking my iron, B12, ferritn, and folate. This helps to give an indication of how well you are absorbing nutrients from your food. He also did a CBC for good measure. If I had been able to be diagnosed by blood panel he would have added that also to see if the numbers had gone down. -
ARCHIVED Altoids Alert
ravenwoodglass replied to tiredofdoctors's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have also seen them listed with glucose (wheat) on the back recently. Who knew you get glucose from wheat! I do appretiate them labeling throughly though. -
The autoimmune processes that celiac can produce can attack any organ in the body. Many of us are found prediagnosis to have elevated liver enzymes but this often will resolve after a period gluten free. My twin, who seemed to be just as celiac as I was had an 'autoimmune destruction of his liver due to idiopathic (means they don't know why) origins...

ARCHIVED Can Celiac Cause Minor Gi Symptoms?
ravenwoodglass replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For some of us the neurological symptoms can be present and do a great deal of damage before GI stuff becomes more than an annoyance. If you want to find out on your own there is no reason not to IMHO, simply stay on the gluten-free diet for at least 6 months, strictly. Find out all you can about it, you came to a great place but also check out the celiac... -
ARCHIVED Hi All New To gluten-free
ravenwoodglass replied to JessieFree's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For a lot of us it is temporary. Once we heal a bit and the villi are again producing the enzyme we need to digest it we are fine. Some of us are able to tolerate hard cheeses like cheddar and yogurt for a bit before stuff like ice cream, mozzarela and just milk. I was able to do yogurt and cheddar relatively soon, within a month or so but for stuff like... -
ARCHIVED Hi All New To gluten-free
ravenwoodglass replied to JessieFree's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It can take a bit of time to heal. A week is not really very long. Are you eating mostly unproccessed naturally gluten free foods at this point? It can be hard to ferret out the hidden gluten in things at first and naturally gluten free will help you heal with less 'mishaps'. Be sure to drop dairy products for a least a little while, the same villi that... -
Glad to hear you are doing well and keeping buzy and gluten-free. Sometimes our 'miraculous' return to health can be enough to wake up our family members. It definately was a deciding factor in my DH getting tested and then following through on the diet after a low positive. Hopefully the same will occur for your family.

ARCHIVED Modified Food Starch?
ravenwoodglass replied to BlackburnK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is rare in the US for MFS to be made of anything other than corn, unfortunately for folks like me. It is as he stated important to call and ask if they do not say what it is derived from. I would like to see all additives labeled as to their source, I am sensitive to corn and I like the MFS to be from tapioca or potato. It costs the companies when... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Effecting Entire Gi Tract?
ravenwoodglass replied to cdfiance's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am so glad it helped, I tried it once in desperation and was really surprised at how much relief I got. One thing I forgot to mention is that it can darken the stool, this is not something to be alarmed about. I don't notice this with just one dose but if she needs to take it a couple of times I wanted her to be aware. It can be scary for us to look... -
ARCHIVED Had Endoscopy Today
ravenwoodglass replied to DarkIvy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree totally with what Ursa said. I would also skip the prilosec for now, just get thee gluten free and you will most likely find you do not need it. There can also be some nasty rebound effects from this type of med. If you get stomach pain when glutened often Pepto Bismal can relieve it very quickly with just one dose and the only side effect may... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Effecting Entire Gi Tract?
ravenwoodglass replied to cdfiance's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In some other countries they use a rectal challenge for diagnosis and are even working on a way to use the oral mucosal tissue. The reason for this is that the challenge is then a one shot process that takes less than a day and there are much less side effects to worry about than our doctors current practice of poisoning us for weeks or months. Also with... -
I am not one who is going to tell you of the need to test first, there are too many false negatives. Your body and it's reaction to gluten is really the deciding factor. I replied on your other post also, your plan is solid for now. I do want to note on the issue of the cereal, the one you mentioned has a very, very high chance of CC. Do not judge whether...

This is actually the diet most of us should do. Yes you cetainly can get adaquate nutrition with the diet you are planning. Much better in fact than the majority of folks. You have basically described my diet for the last 5 or so years with the exception that I do not use ketchup or mustard. I am in better health now than I have been at any point in...

You can also call you doctor and get a referral to a PT. You need a script to see one, at least in my state. I had pinched a nerve or disk which caused sciatic pain and the PT was very helpful.

ARCHIVED Antacids
ravenwoodglass replied to Derek Borckmann's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If I get a severe glutening I do use pepto, one dose will cut the stomach pain almost immediately. It does nothing to stop the D, I just let that run it's course but for me the D hits 3 days later. The stomach pain will start within a few hours. -
ARCHIVED When Do I Worry?
ravenwoodglass replied to grey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Actually in the year or so before diagnosis even getting out of bed was hard. After my 2 to 3 hour stint in the john in gut wrenching pain every night, (IBS my butt) I barely had the energy to move. As for moving most of the time I had to rely on walls or canandian canes just to get around. I was scared to death someone would find out I had to use my arm... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Effecting Entire Gi Tract?
ravenwoodglass replied to cdfiance's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes unfortunately it can. For some the main symptom is heartburn, that was my DD. I get awful pain in the stomach and do get some relief from that from Pepto Bismal. Be careful if she takes an antiacid some are not safe so be sure to check. She has been through so much I am so sorry this happened to her. I hope she feels better soon. -
ARCHIVED When Do I Worry?
ravenwoodglass replied to grey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I really don't know why the 'neuro' presentations would be more sensitive other than we seem to be impacted much, much longer than strictly GI folks. It is so easy to just say your child is clumsy, neurotic, depressed, has poor concentration, is ADD etc, especially in the 'old days'. Many doctors will just shrug thier shoulders when reflexes disappear or... -
ARCHIVED Nervous About Biopsy Results
ravenwoodglass replied to sneezydiva's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
First, your not a hypochondriac. I feel like yelling that but I won't. You are not imagining your pain or your symptoms. Do not let the doctors try to convince you that you are. If the biopsy should come back negative you need to try the diet strictly for at least a couple of months. False negatives abound even with the biopsies. You have 22 ft of small... -
ARCHIVED Is Crosscontamination For The Sensitive Only
ravenwoodglass replied to mario's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree with this completely. I am the 'tester' in my family. If I will eat it everyone else will be okay. I also avoid Lays and agree totally that the company needs to be more honest about CC risk. We should not have to find out by getting ill. -
ARCHIVED Gluten And Bipolar Spectrum
ravenwoodglass replied to slpinsd's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I certainly seemed bipolar and was tenatively diagnosed as one but instead I was finally diagnosed with a rare seizure disorder. The real key without the MRI was how much better I did on an antiseizure med. These symptoms did turn out to be gluten related though and not bipolar, or depression episodes or PMDD. The seizure activity is now closely associated... -
ARCHIVED Rumbly Tummy...
ravenwoodglass replied to gfmolly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would continue with the diet and eliminate anything that you eat right before the rumbles start. For me at 5 years gluten-free almost the only time my tummy complains now is when I get something I shouldn't. It will rumble for a day or two before the D hits. Make sure you are checking you cosmetics and shampoos and such. Also any arts and crafts type... -
ARCHIVED Warm And Burning Feet
ravenwoodglass replied to confused's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This could be a gluten related neuropathy but I would mention it to his doctor. It could also be caused by some other things, diabetes being one of them. I would ask for that to be ruled out quickly. Is he having any other neuro type issues like mood swings, depression, anxiety, numbness and or tingling, headaches? If the answer is yes I would be inclined... -
ARCHIVED When Do I Worry?
ravenwoodglass replied to grey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is not really neccessary to remove all grains unless they are problematical for you. I eat the Italian Bread they make which is white rice, tapioca and potato based. It IMHO is as close to the 'real' thing as I have found. It has a nice texture similar to wheat bread, does not fall apart and is even able to be eaten with just butter. They also make...
