ARCHIVED New To All This And Really Wondering
Ridgewalker replied to sherie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, that's right. Even a very small amount can cause symptoms and will cause damage. Using the same toaster for gluten-free bread and regular bread is totally pointless. You are exactly right. Why bother going gluten-free, doing all the work, and making all that effort... just to turn around and put your gluten-free bread in a gluten crumb holder? Eating... -
ARCHIVED New To All This And Really Wondering
Ridgewalker replied to sherie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Sherie, and welcome to the forum! Casein is a protein found in dairy. Casein's structure is rather similar to the structure of gluten (the protein found in wheat, barley, and rye), and many Celiacs also cannot tolerate casein. Casein is not the same as lactose, which is milk sugar. Can I ask, why is your doctor giving you antibiotics if you don't... -
ARCHIVED Help With Newly Adopted Baby?
Ridgewalker replied to Alexander's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Congratulation on the adoption of your son!!! Although every gi doctor's office is going to be different, in general nothing is automatic. Maybe they'll refer you to an allergist and dietician, but maybe not. Be prepared to ask for what you want. Having said that, it's not easy to find a dietician who is thoroughly familiar with Celiac. As far as celiac... -

Alex, I am sooo happy to hear about Colin! Seeing progress already is wonderful!!! Ya have to laugh... you know that's why kids are so cute, right? So you don't chuck 'em out the window. My kids do this type of thing on a semi-regular basis. While I'm cleaning, I just keep reminding myself, "This will make a funny story... really it will... -

Naturally! And by the way, I looooove that no one here finds it odd that I have a toilet in my living room. Most of my friends are quite confuzzled by my fondness for it. -
ARCHIVED My Mom Gave Me A Jar Of Peanut Satay Sauce
Ridgewalker posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Any recipes or suggestions??? Or is it good just on it's own mixed in noodles? The brand is Thai Kitchen. I've had their noodle bowls before, and thought they were pretty good. -

Ok, it's similar to this, but no back or sides. Mine has an actual bottom, with a lid and a door in front. This is also similar, again mine has no back or sides... and this one is a lot nicer than mine. Another example This one is the most similar to mine, although mine is kind of rough around the edges... and someone painted it dark green a few... -

Happy Late Easter everybody! Good news: The kids have been rapidly improving since the great kitchen cleaning of last week! Bad news: These same two lovely sweet children DESTROYED my kitchen this morning whilst I slept. They got a carton of strawberries out of the fridge. Ah, how nice- a wonderful healthy morning snack. Then they decided... -

Hilarious! Luke was on the phone with my MIL tonight, telling her the toys he wants for Easter... like it's Christmas or something. Cool! Speaking of eggs, I fixed some scrambled Chicken Butt Cootie eggs for the kids' breakfast this morning. The kids were fascinated by the various-sized brown eggs, and the fact that they came from my best... -

Thanks Patti! I screened for obvious stuff a long time ago, but I was pretty sure there were some sneaky chemical names on that list... I will double check everything tonight. -

Oh, I would LOVE that! I wish I could!!! Exactly! That's exactly what it was like, thinking out loud. And Bev, I LOVE it that you yelled at your panic attack. I wish it had worked. -
ARCHIVED Overly-anxious Child
Ridgewalker replied to Darn210's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Janet, I think seeing a good therapist is a great idea. They could have some excellent ideas to help him cope with his fears... writing, drawing, practicing various scenarios... specific exercises designed to help him. Having their input and ideas could be very useful. We haven't had to deal with this ourselves. Lucas does have an abnormally strong... -

OMG! Out-loud-guffaws over here! Really tickled me, exactly what I needed. Thank you for that! Yeah, this infection is incredible. All I want to do is sleep. No matter how much sleep I'm getting, I'm still tired! This week is gonna be interesting- the boys just started Spring Break today. About Luke... one thing I've realized recently... -

Amen to that. And what you said about the practice generation, too... a couple friends have asked me, What's it going to be like for the boys when they get to college and have to be on this diet? Among other things, I've told them that things have changed a lot for Celiacs in the past few years. They'll continue to change, and who knows where we'll... -
That's the line that I immediately zeroed in on as well. It really is huge-- let's hope that this soon becomes the standard method!

Ridgewalker replied to JennyC's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've been using this recipe for the past several months, and I love it too!!! I've served it at several parties, and no one can believe it's gluten-free. It also makes excellent cupcakes! -
ARCHIVED 18 Month Old Twins Tested For Celiac......
Ridgewalker replied to katieskrew's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not sure about any other causes of increased fecal fat, but I did want to mention that Celiac blood tests and endoscopies in young children are not terribly accurate. When they come back positive, they are definitely positive, but there is a significant rate of false negatives. Keep that in mind if the Celiac tests show up negative. From what I understand... -

I do "Ready, Freddy?" as well. Then Ezra says, "My name... is not... Freddy!!!" At which point I simply MUST reply, "FreddyFreddyFreddyFreddyFreddy!" Hey, they torture us-- gotta get in a little payback once in awhile. Yep, squeamishness will not be much of an issue for me. (Squeamishness? Squeamiosity??) Thanks, Amanda! I agree... -

Thanks for all the nursing encouragement, guys! It's one of only a couple careers I can see myself being happy with for the rest of my life. I first made the decision a couple years ago, and have just been waiting for the kids to get a little older (and a little healthier, truth be told.) I've been out of college since Luke was a toddler, so finally preparing... -

What a dweeb. Didn't you say he was a doctor? Is he at least cute, do you know? I cannot even tell you guys how much I lust after TV doctors. Patrick Dempsey... Hugh Laurie... :swoon: Lord, save me. ARCHIVED Looking For Gluten-free Kid-friendly Restaurants
Ridgewalker replied to Truleesmom's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
The above suggestions are excellent! I'd say we have the most good luck at Wendy's and McDonald's (fries, bunless burgers, some salads, etc, check the online menus.) Sometimes we go to Golden Corral, which is a buffet place. A lot of people here do not do buffet because of the higher likelyhood of cross contamination, but we haven't had a problem so far... -

I dunno- I read it in a Heather Graham novel. An old Irish lady said it, and it cracked me up for hours! It must be an old saying, but I'd never heard it before! This is actually the first Graham novel I've read- I picked it up in the drugstore, saw it was about ghosts, and figured I'd finally give her a try. I love scary books. This one isn't scary...
