  1. Well, from those Enterolab results, it certainly looks like your little one has an intollerance to gluten and Casein. I don't see it mentioned above, but has he ever had the bloodwork for celiac disease? If you take the Enterolab report to his ped, it might give them reason enough to at least run the bloodwork. Maybe your doctor will give you a diagnosis...
  2. I had the glucola with no gluten reaction when I was pregnant with my last a little over a year ago. We also verified that it was gluten-free beforehand. Maybe there are different manufacturers? Bummer on failing the GTT. Are they considering you to have gestational diabetes, or do they have to do more tests first?
  3. All first degree relatives of celiacs should be tested regardless of whether or not they are showing symptoms. All the symptoms you mentioned about your children can be linked to celiac disease. They can be due to other things too, of course. We screened my son and daughter after I was diagnosed even though they did not have symptoms. My son was positive...
  4. My son did not care for them, and I thought they were a bit small for the price. I tasted one of the Cocoa Loco ones, and it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. I don't think I'll buy them again.
  5. Yes, I was concerned about that as well at first. I bought a box and squeezed the cheese package, and then shook it up and down vigorously. None of the cheese powder puffed out. I do this each time I buy it, and have yet to find one with an imperfect seal. If I did, I would throw it out. For what it's worth, my son and I are EXTREMELY symptomatic when...
  6. See Open Original Shared Link. There is info from the University of Chicago celiac program regarding gluten challenge.
  7. Severity of symptoms does not necessarily equate to the amount of internal damage. My son was screened as my first degree relative after I was diagnosed. I was sure he would be negative because he had no outward symptoms. His TTG was almost as high as mine was, and his biopsy showed severe intestinal damage. We had nearly the same bloodwork and biopsy...
  8. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Cheerios is not a safe food for celiacs. Not only does it have mainstream oats in it, it has wheat starch. Here is the general mills website with the ingredient panel. Open Original Shared Link
  9. I see your point, but aren't all the ostoporosis meds intended for post-menopausal women? I don't know of any of them (fosamax, actonel, evista, miacalcin) that target a differnet demographic. I am interested in what your doctor said about the delivery system of the miacalcin. Can you tell me more? I should also mention that I do not take any meds...
  10. I know this is an older thread, and I apologize if this has been reccommended before. I used to take Open Original Shared Link, which is a nasal spray for osteoporosis that bypasses the gut entirely. It may be a good option for anyone who is newly diagnosed (or not!) and is still dealing with absorption issues. Hope this helps someone.
  11. I don't know if this thread is still active, but I came across a book with a gluten-free ice cream cone recipe on Amazon today. I haven't tried it, but I thought someone might be interested. Open Original Shared Link
  12. Oats are controversial. It is now believed that most celiacs can tolerate some pure, uncomtaminated oats. Oats contain the protein avenin, which is technically different from the gluten in wheat, barley and rye. It is the gliadin in the wheat, the horedin in the barley, and the secalin in the rye that are the real culprits for celiacs. Avenin in oats causes...
  13. After 2 months gluten-free, there is no way that 2 days of gluten would be a long enough challenge. Here is some information you might find helpful. I hilighted the portion in red that seems to most closely apply to your situation. If I were in your shoes, I would be asking myself how important the diagnosis was to me. Would you be willing to remain 1...
  14. I have seen the can of Kraft cheese powder with the Parmesan Cheese and also with the popcorn products, so it must depend on the store. Sorry I can't help you with the measurements, but I buy the Kraft Mac and cheese in the boxes and use the cheese sauce and toss the uncooked pasta. It's WAY cheaper than the cheese powder in the can, and it does have...
  15. I got glutened by their cornflour BAD right after I was DX, before I know about their gluten-free line. The cornmeal and corn flour that they offer are processed in their NON-gluten-free facility. They do not ELISA test it, and do not market it as gluten-free (No gluten-free symbol). They do offer a gluten-free cornbread mix that is gluten-free. The...
  16. I have had half a dozen endoscopies, but the only one I remember was when I was 11 weeks pregnant. They could not give me as much sedation because of the baby. I remember gagging and struggling quite a bit. I would not want to try it without any sedation at all.
  17. You sure do have lots of intollerances to contend with. Must be quite a juggling act to find something that works for everyone. Thankfully (knock on wood) we just have the gluten to deal with. Darn it that you can't eat beans, too. They are a great source of cheap protein. Can you tolerate eggs? Castile soap is great, and inexpensive, too...
  18. Wow - wish I could afford to spend $1600/month! How average are those people and what the heck are they eating?!? I wonder if that includes eating out? I read recently that nearly half of the food that people eat nowadays is from restaurants. Guess they don't have any celiacs in their family! We keep our grocery bill low in the following ways...
  19. Open Original Shared Linkto a consumer reports article on when it pays (and doesn't) to buy organic foods. Some interesting information, and you may be spending more $ than you need to on some things. We keep our grocery bill low by buying in bulk and doing almost all of our cooking from scratch. I almost never shop at Whole Paycheck (Whole Foods), but...
  20. I started to turn the corner at 3 days gluten-free, and was free of most symptoms by 3 months. The learning curve can be steep with gluten-free food, so I accidentally glutened myself a few times in the first few months. Why the hell is wheat in licorice anyway!?!?! Be patient, and you will start to see results. You may need to eliminate dairy for a...
  21. Chopped dated are often coated in oat flour to keep them from sticking together. It looks white and powdery. I checked the Open Original Shared Link, and there is no ingredient statement for the dates. Does it say that there are oats in them? If it does, they may be (probably are) mainstream oats that are CC with gluten grains. I would ask the manufacturer...
  22. The ASMA (anti-smooth-muscle antibody) test is one that is intended to detect autoimmune chronic hepatitis. Liver enzyme levels and celiac disease can be linked. I have liver issues, and my elevated enzymes have come down considerably since my diagnosis and going gluten-free. Hope this is of some help to you.
  23. Do any of you subscribe to the online newsletter "Open Original Shared Link"? I absolutely LOVE the cookbook that the author put out last year, and am considering joining. Do any of you belong, and do you think it is worth the $? I love that she is a non-celiac that bakes gluten-free food. Who better to be able to tell if it REALLY tastes like the gluten...
  24. You can't beat their prices on nuts. I think I paid something like $2.99/lb the last time I bought cashews. Their price on almond meal is great too. I also get Lara bars and Cliff Nectar bars there. Their rice pasta is cheap - $1.99/lb, and they have spaghetti, fusili and ziti. Their banana waffles in the freezer section are nummy. They have envirokids cereal...
  25. Open Original Shared Linkto my favorite pie crust recipe. It never fails me.
