ARCHIVED Girl Scout Cookie Sales
cruelshoes replied to CtheCeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been a girl scout leader for 7 years. I asked our council cookie manager about gluten-free cookies. He said if the demand were high enough and they came up with a good recipe they would make one. There was a sugar free cookie this year in response to the requests for cookies suitable for diabetics. From what I hear they are horrid, but I have not... -
ARCHIVED Diaper Rash Cream
cruelshoes replied to Guhlia's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We use Burt's Bees diaper rash cream. It is gluten-free, and it smells so much better than the other kinds. -
ARCHIVED Need A Good Recipe For Sandwich Bread
cruelshoes replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Open Original Shared Link to my favorite sandwich bread recipe. It does have dairy, but I have subbed nut meals for them, and it works well. -
ARCHIVED Please Consider What We Are All Here For.
cruelshoes replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sure I must be misreading this section. Can you help me understand? Are you saying that people who do not have celiac disease should not be able to come here looking for support? My son and I have celiac disease - my husband and daughters do not. We all live together in a totally gluten-free house. This disease affects the people in our house that... -
ARCHIVED ...of All The Things To Pass On...
cruelshoes replied to scotty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was 6 when he got his "Gold standard" diagnosis (positive bloodwork/positive biopsy). He had no outward symptoms, but his ttg was nearly as high as mine was and I had total villous atrophy. There was no doubt at all about his results with one blood draw and one biopsy. The whole diagnosis process took 2 doctor visits. If I had it to do all over... -

ARCHIVED Newbie Here...should I Buy A Bread Machine?
cruelshoes replied to gfmomof3's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I tossed my bread machine after my diagnosis, and haven't seen any need to replace it. I allocated my $ and counter space to a kitchenaid mixer and bake bread in the oven. It really doesn't take any extra time since there is only one rise with gluten-free bread and you don't have to worry about punching it down like gluten bread. I mix up the ingredients... -

ARCHIVED Pamelas Baking Mix Is Just Awsome.
cruelshoes replied to zachsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Open Original Shared Link. I am using up my third batch of it today, and need to make more. I made the Pamela's chocolate chip cookies with it yesterday, and it works great. It is about 1/3 the price of the Pamela's mix. -
ARCHIVED Link Between Celiac And Learning Disabilities?
cruelshoes replied to cruelshoes's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sorry this is so long. My son is 8 and in the third grade. His teachers (from preschool on) have always commented that his writing skills are poor. They have always said that he needs to work on his fine motor abilities, and that it would improve. We had him evaluated by an occupational therapist in the first grade, but his writing was found to be... -
ARCHIVED Link Between Celiac And Learning Disabilities?
cruelshoes posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son's pediatrician believes that he has Open Original Shared Link. It is a learning disability, akin to dyslexia, that has to do with writing. He can read and do math several levels above grade level, but is unable to produce coherent/legible handwriting. After many years of struggling with writing, it is nice to have some hope of finally getting some... -
I store the ones with higher fat content, or the ones that go rancid quickly in the refrigerator or freezer. These flours include: quinoa, brown rice, soy, garfava, nut meals. I keep them in glass or plastic conteiners with lids. I have also been keeping millet and amaranth in the freezer because I don't use them as much and want them to stay good. ...

ARCHIVED Need To Recreate Pamela's Pancake And Baking Mix
cruelshoes replied to cruelshoes's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I would have thought that too, but I've talked to several manager types, and they don't seem to give a "Rat's rear" about it. I know Lone Wolf has talked to Marlene herself (the store is named after her, after all), and nothing changed then either. I figure that their prices are too high anyway, so if they don't want to make sure the food is safe, I'll... -
ARCHIVED Cream Of Chicken Soup
cruelshoes replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link cream-soup replacement recipe. I mix this up in snack-sized baggies and have it ready whenever I need to use it for a caserole. It is great. -
ARCHIVED Came Here For Son, But Am I Celiac Too?
cruelshoes replied to missquarejane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
All first degree relatives of celiacs should be tested, regardless of symptoms. After I was diagnosed, we had both my kids tested. One was positive - he had NO symptoms, but his degree of damage was almost as severe as mine was. I disagree that it is impossible to get a gold standard diagnosis (bloodwork/biopsy/dietary results) on a child, because we... -
ARCHIVED Healthy Choice Deli Meats
cruelshoes replied to holdthegluten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED Help! Can't Stop Gaining...
cruelshoes replied to Sesheta's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Several people on another celiac board I am on have mentioned that they have had success with the Weight Watchers core diet - Open Original Shared Link. I don't know much about it, but it is supposed to be quite amenable to the gluten-free diet. I had always been very thin before my diagnosis, but once I went gluten-free, I started to put on weight rapidly... -

ARCHIVED I.v. Fed During Pregnancy
cruelshoes replied to Kelli's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have done IV feedings, but not during pregnancy. I did it for 2 years during cancer treatment as a teenager, for another year in my 20's before my celiac disease diagnosis and for another month right after I was diagnosed. It is called TPN or Total Parenteral Nutrition. I did this as an outpatient for most of the time, but I did have to go into the... -

Here is the current Open Original Shared Link. Lays does produce these chips on shared lines, but they clean between runs. If you want a Lays product that is produced in a gluten-free facility, that would be the Lays Stax. Hope this helps. -
ARCHIVED Can We Start A Corn Intolerance Support Thread?
cruelshoes replied to emcmaster's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Can you tell me more about how you do this for beef stock? How many bones you need to buy, etc. I use my pressure cooker to make chicken stock, and it is great. With a pressure cooker it only takes about an hour, too. -
ARCHIVED Expandex
cruelshoes replied to debmidge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for your review of this product. I am interested in it as well. I may have to pick some up. Another product that I know of that may have promise for us is Open Original Shared Link. It is a modified corn starch that is used for canning pie fillings and such. I have been intending to try it out for baking, but I haven't gotten around to it yet... -

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Want To Witness Me Being Pummelled?
cruelshoes replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Wow. I think some of those people missed their naptime today. Why can't they just chill out and recognize that it may work for some and not others? What a load of s**t that the gluten-free diet is unhealthy. Seems like it can be like any other diet - done well it can be very healthful. If one eats nothing but gluten-free cookies all day it wouldn... -
ARCHIVED Food For Life Breads
cruelshoes replied to Glutenfreefamily's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The brown rice tortillas are sooooo much better than corn tortilas. I personally hate the texture of corn tortillas. If you nuke the brown rice tortillas for 30 seconds or so, they are very pliable, and can be used to make a wrap or burrito. I also like to eat them cold with hummus or sunflower seed buter. Mmmm - yummy!
