ARCHIVED Need Non-food Ideas For A Birthday With The School Class
cruelshoes posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son's birthday is coming up later in the month. He is turning 9. It is pretty much expected that when it is your birthday, you have to bring in some kind of treat to share with the class. If it is a treat of food, it cannot be homemade. Last year we took in Mi-del chocolate chip cookies. This went over like a lead balloon, since a few of the more... -
ARCHIVED M&ms
cruelshoes replied to Trillian's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This company labels all their gluten ingredients, and the label will tell you if there is gluten in the product. It will be clearly indicated on the label, and not hidden in something ambiguous like "natural flavors" What they are telling you is that they do not maintain a list of gluten-free products. This is actually a good thing. Lists are obsolete... -
ARCHIVED New Support Group Starting In Federal Way, Wa
cruelshoes replied to lonewolf's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'll be there with bells on! Maybe I can meet other people with young kids. Hopefully that will get me off my butt about starting the ROCK group I keep thinking about. Was this in the Marlene's newsletter that just came out last week? I suppose I could check their website to see...... -

ARCHIVED Celiac Treatment: What Should I Expect In The 1st Year?
cruelshoes replied to sandyg's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would also add to what the other posters said that you should have a DEXA scan to check for osteoporosis. This is extremely common in newly diagnosed celiacs, due to the malabsorption. This would give you a baseline now, an then could be checked again in a year to see if you are building bone mass. Here is what the Open Original Shared Link about repeat... -
ARCHIVED Leftover Halloween Candy..

You could give it to the food bank. They would probably be happy to have it. I usually take my extra to work and feed it to my coworkers. -
ARCHIVED Possible Bug In Forum Software
cruelshoes replied to oldsalt19's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Yes, it does that. It will autocorrect the letters "c" and "d" without a space to "celiac disease". This does get kind of confusing if one is talking about a "compact disc" and not "celiac disease." It will also autocorrect the letters "G" and "F" without a space to gluten-free. If you put a period betweed c and d it will work. (C.D) -
I used a contaminated toaster once shortly after going gluten-free. I got violently ill, and it took 3 days for the symptoms to go away. I once got into something that had gluten (not just CC, but outright gluten) and it took 3 weeks for the symptoms to go away. The resolution of symptoms you can feel is much quicker than the resolution of the internal...

ARCHIVED Kix Cereal
cruelshoes replied to jnifred's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The problem with Kix, and all other cereals that I know of, is the oats that they are made from AREN'T the ones that are grown separately from wheat. THey are contaminated with gluten. Do not eat Kix - they are not safe. -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's- Unofficial Poll
cruelshoes replied to confusedks's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We eat so much TJ's food it isn't funy. We don't react to any of the products we have tried (LOTS of them ), and our antibodies are negative. The thing about Trader Joe's is that they don't produce a lot of their products. They have other companies produce them, and then put the TJ's label on them. Last I heard, their pasta was made by tinkyada, for... -
ARCHIVED Bread Maker...bad News
cruelshoes replied to ConnieA84's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Is your machine programmable? gluten-free bread only needs one rise. It does not need to be punched down and rise again like gluten bread. To increase the chance of success, it would be great if you could eliminate the second rise. That can definitely impact the end product. I would check out your machine's manual to see if you can do that. Secondly, gluten... -
I don't subscribe, but I do buy it at the health food store when I get a chance. It is a great resource for new recipes and ideas. The pictures are great eye candy, too. I am putting a subscription on my Christmas list this year. Our library has a subscription. Maybe yours does too. If so, you could check out a few copies and see if it is a fit for...

ARCHIVED Need Cereal Similar To Kashi Brand
cruelshoes replied to Lexie73's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
gluten-free cereals that I have found to be on the healthier side include: Nature's Path Mesa Sunrise - You either like it or you hate it. My kids won't touch it, but I think it's pretty good. It has a decent amount of fiber and is not too sweet. Health Valley Corn Crunchems - nothing like Kashi, but low in sugar and really tasty. They make a rice... -
ARCHIVED Am I Just Being A Baby?
cruelshoes replied to sickchick's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The Bob's Red Mill mixes you are all talking about have bean flours in them. Bean flours taste absolutely nasty before they are baked. To me it tastes metallic. After baking the bean flour taste goes away. Never try to eat the unbaked beginning of a recipe that has bean flours in it. Yech! The bob's red mill hearty whole grain bread mix has to be... -

ARCHIVED Making The Whole Family gluten-free?
cruelshoes replied to moonlitemama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We have a totally gluten-free house. My son and I are celiacs, my husband and 2 daughters are not. It was actually my husband's idea for the house to be totally gluten-free, after I showed him all the little crumbs he was leaving everywhere. He is absolutely untrainable as far as kitchen crumbs are concerned. Our grocery bill is not much higher... -

I allow my son to have the McDonald's french fries about once a month. I eat them about once a month also. Both of our antibodies are negative. We have never has a reaction to them. If we had a reaction or spike in our antibodies, I would not eat them anymore. It is definitely a personal choice, and I understand why many people do not eat them. It...

ARCHIVED ...of All The Things To Pass On...

With the new labeling laws, soy would have to be declared on the label because it is one of the "big 8" allergens. If there is soy in the product, i would have to be celarly labeled like "natural flavors (soy)" or say "contains soy" at the end. I'm not saying that the product does not have soy, only that the label will be able to tell you.....
