ARCHIVED Xanthan Gum
cruelshoes replied to Carol the Dabbler's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I buy xanthan gum 5-pounds at a time. I use it literally every day. Plenty of food is gross if you really stop to think about it. Ever eaten Good & Plenty candy? The cochineal coloring you see listed on the label is made from ground up beetles. Ever eaten a yeast bread? Yeast is a microorganism that eats sugar and excretes waste products... -
ARCHIVED Nonfood Items...why Worry?
cruelshoes replied to carecare's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What gets on your hands or in the air can get into your mouth. The problem would not be absorbing gluten through your skin. It has to get into the digestive tract to harm you. Have you ever touched your eye or face after putting on makeup (Not that DH wears makeup, but stick with me here )? Or have you ever put on some hand lotion? Then fast... -
ARCHIVED What Is The Law Exactly On Allergy Warnings
cruelshoes replied to VioletBlue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Companies are not required to have an allergen warning per-se. They are, however, required to include the "big 8" somewhere on their ingredient statement if it is added to the product. The Big 8 allergens include milk, eggs, fish (e.g., bass, flounder, cod), Crustacean shellfish (e.g., crab, lobster, shrimp), tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans), peanuts... -
ARCHIVED Special Thx To Our Wonderful Moderators!
cruelshoes replied to loco-ladi's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
If the forum gets as much spam as I get in my personal email, the mods must be doing a great job. Bah humbug to spammers. We don't want your stock tips or your cheap prescriptions. And don't even get me started on the "anatomy enhancing" products. Goooooo away. Thanks from me too. -
ARCHIVED Brand New - Could Really Use Some Insight
cruelshoes replied to mmcdaniels's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The soft serve ice creams are on the current Open Original Shared Link. We hardly ever go there, but my son occasionally will get a Dilly Bar. To the original poster - It is a very good idea to forego eating out when one is first diagnosed. Cross-contamination is a very great possibilty at fast food restaurants under the best of circumstances. Any exposure... -
ARCHIVED Everyday Minerals - Great gluten-free Mineral Make-up!
cruelshoes replied to Mango04's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This company is great to work with. I ordered my samples on a Friday, and had them on a Monday. Unfortunately, the colors I chose for my samples were all wrong. The foundations were way too light, and the blush I chose (Text Message) was way too dark. I think the blush will work well as a lip color, though. I just had to order more samples today to get... -
ARCHIVED Is Organic Millet Flour gluten-free
cruelshoes replied to tbradley93's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Millet itself is a gluten free ingredient. However, there are MANY reports of high levels of gluten contamination in Deland products. I wouldn't touch it. Below are some links to Delphi about Deland products. There have been problems with that company's products for years. Some of their products also contain spelt, which would not technically need to... -
I used to feel feel INCREDIBLY guilty that I passed this on to my son. I am still sorry that he has to go through it. But, when I told this to my husband, he made a good point. Would we have chosen not to have our kids if we had known about celiac before we had them? Probably not. Everyone has genetics that will lead to something. We could have passed...

ARCHIVED Rolled Out Pizza Dough
cruelshoes replied to IsAMom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Chebe might work. It wouldn't be exactly the same, but you can definitely roll it out. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Chicken Boullion (powder Or Paste) Free Of Corn/soy/gluten?
cruelshoes replied to cruelshoes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for all the recipes and responses. I did find one brand that looks OK. It's not a chicken flavor, but I think it would work. I am not familiar with all the ways to hide corn and soy. Can you experts read it over for me? I have found several posts on this board that state that it is gluten-free, but I need to know about the soy and corn. I sent... -
ARCHIVED Looking For A Tnt Fudge Recipe
cruelshoes replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Open Original Shared Link to my Dad's recipe. He makes it every Christmas. It has ruined all other fudge for me. -
Her are some to get you started. Open Original Shared Link Gluten intolerance, in Autism, is thought to be related to the incomplete digestion and breakdown of proteins. Normally, proteins are digested by enzymes in the intestines and are broken down into long chain amino acids. With maldigestion, short chains of these amino acids, known as peptides...

ARCHIVED Pacific Foods Almond Milk?
cruelshoes replied to ruthla's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
According to the Open Original Shared Linkwebsite, that is a gluten-free product. It does, however, have soy, which can be a problem for some people. Hope you get to the bottom of things, and feel better soon. -
ARCHIVED Spelt?
cruelshoes replied to Nyxie63's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Spelt is an ancient form of wheat. It is lower in gluten, but still off limits for the gluten-free diet. Open Original Shared Link I have often seen spelt products labeled as "wheat free", but I have not seen them labeled as "gluten free". Can you tell me what gluten-free internet site says spelt is safe? Moreover, it is often stated that spelt... -

ARCHIVED Garlic Jim's Gluten Free Pizza
cruelshoes replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
WHAT??? Garlic Jim's has gluten-free pizza? We have one of those in our town - I wonder if it's available there. I just sent an email to their head office to find out. Hope someone can tell you how it is. I'd love to try it. -
First, I will say that Benadryl is not a treatment for celiac disease. Taking Benadryl does not make it safe for you to eat gluten. Benadryl is an antihistamine, and celiac is not a hystamine response. Having said that..... Benadryl is often prescribed to cancer patients as an anti-nausea drug, because it does help with that. (See WebMD). ...

ARCHIVED Insurance Coverage For Food?
cruelshoes replied to knav76's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have not heard of insurance companies subsidizing the cost of gluten-free food. However, if you have a flexible spending acount (FSA) you can claim part of the cost. The FSA cannot be used for the full price of gluten free food. It can only be used for the difference between the the regular version and the gluten-free version. For example, if gluten... -
ARCHIVED Fajita Tacos & Broiled Potatoes
cruelshoes replied to The One's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sounds like a great meal. My husband loves his tacos with potatoes. I would love to see the pictures, but I get the following error message when I click the links: Thanks for the idea, and I'm sure the pictures look great too! -
Hi, Brian. I have been where you are. In 1987, I was diagnosed with abdominal cancer at age 16. I had 2 years of chemo and radiation. What we didn't know at the time was that the treatments triggered my celiac disease. I was going #2 50x/day and got down to 85 pounds (I am 5'6"). I did daily TPN for 2 years with a groshong catheter (tube that hangs out...

ARCHIVED Help With Baking
cruelshoes replied to Dandelion's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Guar gum serves the same purpose as xanthan gum, so you would not need to add extra to the mix you mention above. The general rule for adding xanthan gum to recipes is as follows: 1 tsp. xanthan or guar gum per cup of flour for cakes 2 tsp. xanthan or guar gum per cup of flour for breads or pizza, 1 tsp. or no xanthan or guar gum per cup of flour for...
