Open Original Shared Link Has anyone ever had luck eating at Salty's in the Seattle area? I know we take a risk whenever we eat out, and I will need to communicate with the restaurant, but I thought I would ask. My kids got free meal coupons for Salty's brunch for participating in a walkathon at school. Oh, how I hate food rewards, but I hate to say...

ARCHIVED Wendy's gluten-free Menu Update - Nov 07
cruelshoes replied to buffettbride's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Open Original Shared Link Their french fries are not on their gluten-free list because many restaurants cook them in the same oil as the nuggets and fish. Here is what the website says about the Fries: I have found Wendy's with dedicated fryers before, but you have to ask at each one. There hasn't been any change to the fries. There are no gluten... -
ARCHIVED Everyday Minerals - Great gluten-free Mineral Make-up!
cruelshoes replied to Mango04's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
OK all you girly-girls. This stuff is hard. How am I supposed to pick the right color for me. I don't know if my skin is ruddy with yellow undertones or cool with pink overtones. Is there an easy way to figure out what color is good for you? My skin is....skin colored. Would they be able to walk me through it if I called them? We have a store in town... -
ARCHIVED Easy To Make Foods And Easy To Eat Foods
cruelshoes replied to bakingbarb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm not really sure how my post was offensive. I posted that disclaimer because I also posted the same list on the same day on another thread (Open Original Shared Link) within an few hours of posting it here. Many boards will ban you for spamming if you post the same thing more than once. On the other thread it was pronounced "awesome". As the title... -
ARCHIVED Company Christmas Party
cruelshoes replied to Kathy'sUnicorns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would ask your HR department for the contact information for banquet manager at the hotel. Then I would call that person and ask if they are able to accommodate special diets. The banquet staff may be able to prepare you a safe plate and hold it for you until you get there. I was able to attend our last service awards dinner, and this worked for me.... -
ARCHIVED Everyday Minerals - Great gluten-free Mineral Make-up!
cruelshoes replied to Mango04's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the tip. I am going to check it out. I have wanted to try the Bare Minerals for along time, but have been too cheap. Is the Everyday Minerals easy to use? How was your experience of buying makeup off the web? Were the colors that you chose right for you? I am not good with girly-makeup stuff at all, so am a little nervous about not... -
That test still exists. Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA-IgG and AGA-IgA) are less often used used to test for Celiac Disease due to a low level of accuracy in people who have not yet been diagnosed. (source: Open Original Shared Link) . However, the test may still be run as a part of the celiac panel. It is very common to have the anti gliadin test run...

ARCHIVED Gingerbread Cookies?
cruelshoes replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You can definitely try it with the other flour mix, but I haven't tried it personally. My recipe is a modification of a Bette Hagman recipe. Let me know if it works out. -
ARCHIVED Holding The Fda Responsible
cruelshoes replied to JodiC's topic in Publications & Publicity
I have never seen statistics that say celiac is as high as 1:30. A more generally accepted statistic is 1:133 for celiac disease, and then they say "even more have gluten intollerance" because it's harder to get a read on that number. I would be interested to see a statistic of 1:30. So it celiac disease affects about 1% of the population and there are... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Starch
cruelshoes replied to JodiC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Companies are not required to have an allergen warning per-se. They are, however, required to include the "big 8" somewhere on their ingredient statement if it is added to the product. They can do this one of 2 ways: In the list of ingredients, put the name of the food source of the major food allergen in parenthesis after the common or usual name of... -

ARCHIVED Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Oats - Has Anyone Tried These Yet ?
cruelshoes replied to suepooh4's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I thought they were both good. The Gifts Of Nature was a little thinner than the Bob's Red Mill one, so it was a bit more like a quick oat in texture than Bob's. The glutenfreeoats.com was in the middle of the two. I rather liked the old fashioned texture of Bob's, but I guess it would depend on what you prefer. I do hope you plan on coughing up the... -
ARCHIVED Flour Tortilla Replacement
cruelshoes replied to JustMe75's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We like Open Original Shared Linkbrown rice tortillas and Trader Joe's Brown Rice Tortillas. If you nuke them for about 30 seconds they are quite pliable. We have tried the Teff ones from Open Original Shared Link, but didn't care for them as much. -
My tastebuds have definitely changed, or as I like to say, evolved. There were some things that I tried just after going gluten-free that I thought tasted absolutely terrible. Trader Joe's pasta, for example. But after a few months, I tried them again and they tasted fine. I don't know scientifically why this would be the case. Perhaps it just has to...

CC=cross-contamination It is when otherwise gluten-free food comes in contact with gluten, thereby contaminating it. Think of someone sticking the hand that just ate a gluten cookie into a bag of otherwise gluten-free potato chips. Or putting a piece of gluten-free bread into a toaster that has been used to toast gluten bread. Those pesky crumbs go...

ARCHIVED Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Oats - Has Anyone Tried These Yet ?
cruelshoes replied to suepooh4's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've had the BRM oats, as well as the ones from Gifts of Nature and glutenfreeoats.com. They are all very good. I seem to be able to tolerate them quite well. They are more of an old fashioned oat, so they have more "chew" than quick cooking oats that you might be used to. They work great in cookies. If you do decide to order from BRM and you want to... -

ARCHIVED Substitute For Xanthan Gum And Other Gums
cruelshoes replied to fushiacat's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Here are some links that may be of use to you. Open Original Shared Link that reccommends subbing milled flax seed for the xanthan in equal amounts. I haven't tried it myself, so I can't say how well it will work. Open Original Shared Link that recommends subbing unflavored gelatin for xanthan at a double measure. So for 1 T xanthan, one would sub... -
ARCHIVED Clinical Trial Recruiting
cruelshoes replied to JustJust's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I respetfully disagree. I signed up to participate. My symptoms are extremely severe. I spent years carrying an IV bag around with me in a backpack just to stay alive. A central line in ones chest to receive IV nutrition is pretty severe. I remember only too well the hours spent in the fetal position wondering what I could have done to deserve such pain... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have A Tried And True Christmas Cookie Recipe
cruelshoes replied to mairin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Open Original Shared Link is fan-freakin-tastic. We make it all the time, and gluten eaters cannot tell the difference. -

This is from 7/11/06. Doesn't look promising

My hands are extremely dry. The skin on my knuckles is even starting to split and bleed. I have been using all the normal lotions I have, but none of them are helping. My mom always gives me silicone glove from Avon for Christmas, so I have a crapload of that, but I haven't checked its gluten-free status so I am not using it. Do any of you have a recommendation...

ARCHIVED Blood In Stool
cruelshoes replied to AFH's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Blood in the stool can be indicative of celiac disease. However, Open Original Shared Linkof 221 other cause of blood in the stool. I passed blood every time I went #2 in the 6 months before I was diagnosed (50+ times per day, if you can believe it). I had total villous atrophy, though and was pretty far gone. The GE junction is the junction between...
