ARCHIVED Need To Recreate Pamela's Pancake And Baking Mix
cruelshoes replied to cruelshoes's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You are in Federal Way, right? I am too. I get most of the basic flours at the 99 Ranch Market in the Great Wall Shopping Mall in Renton. That is the cheapest place I have found. Brown Rice flour I get from Minkler's Green Earth in Renton. I order it in a 50-poung bag to get the price down. I put most of it in my big freezer and only put a small amount... -

OMG - you have given me such a laugh. Boys and gum - a lethal combination. Good thing kids are so darn cute, especially when you feel like throttling them. -
ARCHIVED Need To Recreate Pamela's Pancake And Baking Mix
cruelshoes replied to cruelshoes's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Well, the Pamela's mix costs me about $14 for the large bag, so that's about $3.50/lb. I pay about $.69.lb for rice, tapioca, sweet rice and potato starch. Brown rice flour is $.99/lb. I pay $4.99/lb for almond meal. The buttermilk powder was $5.50 or so for the canister, but I only needed about a third of it for the recipe. Not sure what I last paid... -

ARCHIVED Need To Recreate Pamela's Pancake And Baking Mix
cruelshoes posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you have ever tried Pamela's Pancake and Baking mix, you know how good it is. I use it for everything to biscuits to banana bread. I made Zuchini bread with it yesterday and man is it good. We are totally broke right now, and I can't afford to buy any more for the forseeable future. Has anyone tried to recreate it and had any success? Here is the... -
I just looked, and I don't see it in the list either. The moderators can probably explain why that is happening. I was able to find the post you are talking about by clicking on your profile and choosing the "find member's topics" option. You do have some responses. Maybe you can look at it that way for now. I hope today is a better day.

ARCHIVED Burt's Beeswax Lip Balm
cruelshoes replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got an email from Burts Bees a month ago that confirmed that their Vitamin E is soy derived. I use their lip balm regularly with no reaction. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Pill
cruelshoes replied to hit2win1's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would totally participate. Anything to get the pill closer to a reality. Looks like it is going to take place in Seattle, too. I think I will email Alba and see what I need to do to get on the list. -

ARCHIVED How To Lower Cholesterol?
cruelshoes replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am in pretty much the same boat as you. I am 36, 5'6" and 135 pounds. I was very little red meat, butter or cheese. Yet my cholesterol total is still 240 with my LDL's way too high (can't remember the exact number). For me it is mostly genetic, as high cholesterol runs in my family. Once book I would reccommend is Open Original Shared Link. It's like... -
ARCHIVED Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Whole Grain Rolled Oats
cruelshoes replied to tiffjake's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Update - I just called Bob's Red mill to ask when the oats would be widely available. The oats will not be officially available until 9/1, and then it will take some time for the distrubutors to pick them up and move them out to the stores. Note - you will not see them on the Bob's red mill gluten-free list until after 9/1. I am really interested in... -

ARCHIVED Baking Thermometers
cruelshoes replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have had great success baking bread since I started using a thermometer. I use an instant-read digital thermometer like Open Original Shared Link. The center of the bread should be 209 - 211 degrees. I bake the bread for the low end of time that the recipe calls for, and then add time if the temp is still too low. I take the bread temp while it is still... -
ARCHIVED Nexium, Mentos And More
cruelshoes replied to The Lovebug's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Please help me understand the fructose and wheat connection. Open Original Shared Link is a form of sugar that is generally derived from fruit. It is on the celiac.com safe food ingredients list. The wheat derived sugar that is included in Mentos is glucose syrup, isn't it? I don't eat mentos, but I would like to understand what ingredient we are talking... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Oats
cruelshoes replied to IsAMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Are you sure they were from Bob's Red Mill? Last time I called them (March 14, 2007), they told me while they hope to one day offer gluten-free oats, they had no immediate plans to do so. They aren't on Open Original Shared Link, either. Just curious, as I'd love to have another source for gluten-free oats. As far as the brand the original poster... -

ARCHIVED Question About Chemotherapy
cruelshoes replied to libbyann's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had 2 years of chemo for cancer as a teenager. That was when my symptoms showed up for the first time. Chemotherapy drugs act on fast growing cells and kill them. That's why people lose hair, get mouth sores, etc. Hair and skin cells are fast growing. I'm not a doctor, but I don't think chemo drugs would have any protective effects for people with... -
ARCHIVED Did Your Hair Fall Out?
cruelshoes replied to libbyann's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
After I was diagnosed, I started to lose lots of hair. I was really freaked out by it. I went to the doctor about it, and she said that any time you have a serious illness (I was literally near death when I was diagnosed), it disturbs the hair cycle. Hair lives a certain amount of time, and then it is programmed to fall out. The number of hairs growing and... -

ARCHIVED Canning Tomato Sauce
cruelshoes replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You can preserve the sauce with meat in it in canning jars, but only if you have a pressure canner. Otherwise, it will not get hot enough to kill all the organisms, and you are at risk of breeding botulism and all sorts of other nasties. If you don't have a pressure canner, you can always put it in the freezer. To safely water bath tomatoes/tomato sauce...
