ARCHIVED Doctor Offered Gene Testing...
cruelshoes replied to Presto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Group Health tests for DQ2 and DQ8. You cannot have a false positive or negative on gene testing - you either possess the genes or you do not. The gene testing is interesting, but not necessarily informative. 30% or so of the population has the genes for celiac, but very few of them go on to develop the disease. And it is unlikely, but possible, to have... -
ARCHIVED Test Questions?
cruelshoes replied to suzyks's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The celiac bloodwork panel consists of 5 tests, some of which are IgA antibodies, and some of which are IgG. You have posted the total IgA result. This test measures your daughter's ability to make IgA antibodies. A small number of people do not produce this type of antibody - it's known as IgA deficiency. If the total IgA is below the reference range... -
ARCHIVED Glutinous Rice Flour
cruelshoes replied to sixdogssixcats's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
In latin, the word "gluten" means glue, or sticky. Glutinous rice is called such because it is glue-like or sticky and not in the sense of containing gluten like wheat, barley and rye do. You will also see it labeled as sweet rice. Glutinous rice flour is not a substitute for rice flour, it has much more holding power (gluey-ness), and will result in... -
ARCHIVED How Important Is A Diagnosis?
cruelshoes replied to elaffint's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If a drug treatment were ever to become available for celiac, there would be the possibility that doctors would not prescribe it without a diagnosis. In the case of children, a diagnosis is necessary to obtain a 504 plan or work with the dietician to get a gluten-free school lunch. If one desires to participate in clinical trials for drugs currently... -

ARCHIVED 2009 Gig Conference Planning
cruelshoes replied to cruelshoes's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It will be June 5 - 6 (Friday and Saturday) 2009 at the Sea Tac Marriott. You can attend one day or both days. The first day will be lighter and focus on food and cooking, and the second day will be more clinical and deal with the medical side. The next planning meeting is Monday, so if anyone else has any other ideas to throw into the mix, feel free... -
ARCHIVED 2009 Gig Conference Planning
cruelshoes replied to cruelshoes's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I posted this topic on three discussion boards. This is the only board on which it turned ugly. I am quite honestly baffled at what happened on much of this thread. I do not anticipate asking any questions here in the future. I have a splitting headache, and can't see how this ended up so totally FUBAR. Very disappointing. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Pizza At Washington State Garlic Jim's
cruelshoes posted a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Received this in my email today. It's a little too far away for our family, but I thought it might help someone else. Who knows - maybe we will make the trek up north to try it. The draw of pizza that I didn't have to make is pretty powerful. -

ARCHIVED Cheerios
cruelshoes replied to chasing4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have a box of Trix at home on my counter, and it does not contain wheat starch. The formulation of trix goes back and forth, so you have to read the label every time. We do not buy them a lot, but do consume then occasionally. -

ARCHIVED 2009 Gig Conference Planning

Overheard on Open Original Shared Link today: Beaver - Jeepers, Wally, do you think that thread will ever get back on topic? Wally - Don't be such a blockhead, Beav. The next post in the thread will contain one topic for the 2009 GIG conference. Don't let Wally down! -

ARCHIVED Good For You Pepperoni
cruelshoes replied to mama2two's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wellshire Farms pepperoni is gluten-free, sliced and free of nitrites/nitrates. I have not tried it, so I cannot vouch for the taste. All the other Wellshire farms products i have had are great, though. Open Original Shared Link Hope this helps. -
ARCHIVED 2009 Gig Conference Planning
cruelshoes replied to cruelshoes's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
As long as you are not calling me a 7-point type. That I cannot abide. Who knew minion had so many definitions. All of my dealings with the GIG have been overwhelmingly positive, so I can't explain why your experience was different. Perhaps the conference will be so good you won't be able to resist the draw of free samples and the chance to see... -

A minion is either a fawning sycophant or an african shrub. Which one are you suggesting I put on my business cards? I'm trying hard to figure out how it isn't a personal attack on me. So far I am coming up short. -
ARCHIVED Question About Ttg
cruelshoes replied to leadmeastray88's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is not unheard of to have a negative TtG and still have celiac. The problem is compounded by the fact that they did not run the complete celiac panel. Without the Total IgA score, it i impossible to know whether or not one is IgA deficient. If it were me, I would return to the doctor by phone ir in person, and request the full celiac panel. Antigliadin... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Tried Humaworm?
cruelshoes replied to Nancym's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am just getting around to thinking about trying this, and i just read this on the Open Original Shared Link. Bummer. A family of raccoons has built a nest in a neighbor's tree, and their poo has lots of nasty parasites in it. I was thinking of doing this as a preventative measure, along with a commando effort to get rid of the nasty raccoons... -
ARCHIVED Still Drinking Regular Beer - No Problems
cruelshoes replied to Mountaineer Josh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The thing that strikes me about this entire conversation is this: The mantra that we all hear on the different celiac boards is that the testing is not perfect. In the diagnosis phase, does negative bloodwork mean you don't have celiac? Nope. Does no villi damage found on a biopsy mean gluten isn't a problem? Nope. Why should things be any different... -
ARCHIVED Wow, People Really Don't Get It...
cruelshoes replied to samcarter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The one that always makes me chuckle is "I don't like wheat bread either. You can eat white bread, right?" As if it is not made of wheat flour, it's made of some other mystery grain called "white." Other favorites include: "Soy sauce can NOT have wheat in it." "But this cereal is made of rice. See - RICE Krispies!!!" "Just peel the cheese off and... -
ARCHIVED Good Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix Or Recipe?
cruelshoes replied to munchkinette's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The recipe on the back of the Pamelas Ultimate bag are the easiest and best, IMO. I get foolproof results with it, but I always refrigerate the dough over night before baking. My NGF parents had some at our place last night, and my Dad said they were the best cookies he had ever had. -
Last night was the first conference call for planning the 2009 GIG conference. It takes place in Seattle next year, so I want to be on the planning committee. Cynthia Kupper of the GIG is great, and very enthusiastic. She sounds like a real superwoman! I am really excited to help, and can't wait to attend! I'm not in charge of the event or anything, just...

ARCHIVED 14th Day Back On Gluten
cruelshoes replied to Gerri's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I do not claim to understand the mechanism of how these autoimmune conditions work and/or inter-relate. However, it does appear that, for some, the prodcuction of TtG may not be caused by ingestion of gluten at all. General consensus is that the TtG is 90 - 95% specific to celiac disease. That leaves some wiggle room for error. The specificity declines... -
ARCHIVED 14th Day Back On Gluten
