  1. I also love their produce and meats, which are always really fresh. They really are a great place to shop so I am pleased that they will be making changes.
  2. Proof that sometime the squeaky wheel does get the grease. This is the email I returned to the corporate office this morning after receiving a call from the store manager: Thank you so much for your prompt response to this issue. I just received a call from Phil at the (store name). He was very concerned and kind. As he stated and as I have found in...
  3. Thought I would post a copy of the e-mail I just sent to the stores corporate offices: As a courtesy I am making you aware of a health hazard present in the health market at your XXXXXXXXXXX. I have Celiac disease, as do many members of my family and we buy 90% of our gluten free products in your stores. Today I purchased a 6 pack of Redbridge beer which...
  4. I have a favorite store here in Lincoln, NE that has a health market which carries an amazing array of gluten free products. I do 90% of my shopping there. At the end of the aisle that is dedicated to gluten free products is (are you ready for this?) a flour grinding station! Since I have never really needed anything from that end of the aisle, I never...
  5. I had to laugh at this a bit. Many children love to eat playdough, which, in my opinion, is exactly what ramen tastes like to me. I am sure that if it is cooked into something with some real flavor, it probably is much like tofu in that it takes on that flavor. My children used to love the stuff before they figured out that they had celiac. My husband...
  6. While we do have lots of trees in the eastern part of the state, much of it is as you describe where you live with mile after mile of grain or corn fields. I have been all over the U.S., and there is not a part of it that I don't love. Different is beautiful. Would be interested to know where your friend lives as we have lived in the Lincoln and out-lying...
  7. Thanks, love2travel! I just saw in the news today that Lincoln is one of the top ten cities in the U.S. to retire. If you get back to Lincoln, either Fireworks or Lazlo's are really great with their menus and waitstaff! Hope you get to try it sometime. I would love to come north and see Canada someday.
  8. Regardless of the maltodextrin or citric acid issues, Wal-mart brand kool-aid, and as far as I know the Crystal-lite wannabe's actually state that they are processed in plants that also produce wheat products. Also, many of the GV(Great Value)brands used to be gluten-free and then Wal-mart decided to go with different suppliers and requirements (basically...
  9. My husband was in the military when we were married 33 years ago tomorrow. Having only been diagnosed with this 4 years ago, I did not consider how difficult this issue would be for 'our kind " as he left the service more than 20 years ago. My heart goes out to all of you. I have dined on the lovely MRE's. They are the most delicious, imaginative use...
  10. ....so the staff really knows their stuff and I have always felt safe eating there. They also have two other restaurants called Lazlo's and they also have great gluten-free menus. The only time I have have ever gotten zapped was interestingly enough from a glass of water with a slice of lemon in it. As I was fine when I went into the restaurant and sick...
  11. I had seen that RT's had a gluten-free menu and it used to be one of my favorite places to eat prior to being DX'd but for some reason I have never been brave enough to try it. I went once after my DX and ordered only a steak, green beans and mashed potatoes and as you did, explained my gluten-free issues and was sick before I left the restaurant. Will...
  12. Would love to know what you do with the lemongrass simple syrup and if you would be interested in sharing your recipe for the coconut lime layered cake and the foccacia. They all sound so wonderful!
  13. Wow! You are so ambitious! Can I come to your house? I made cake lollies. I bake a yellow and a chocolate gluten-free cake mix. Crumbled each. Added a bit of orange juice to the yellow and a bit of marschino cherry juice to the chocolate. While molding them into small balls, I added a small piece of candied orange slice to the yellow and a marschino...
  14. For the record, my husband and I have separate coffee makers because flavored coffee, including Millstone, makes me sick to my stomach. Not necessarily the gluten symptoms, but I can't drink it. We also have coffee that they use at work that is not flavored but causes problems for me as well. To me it seems to be related to the acidity of it...could be...
  15. The twisting gut IS very accurate! My first symptom though is a feeling of being completely stuffed full of food. It usually happens after just a few bites and within 15 minutes of consumption, followed by rapidly repeating burping for several minutes. Does anyone else experience this? I will tell you that that initial discomfort (at least for me and...

    ARCHIVED Red Robin

So I looked up the RR website last night to see what their gluten-free offerings were. As I said before, when you take away all of the 'can't haves' and disclaimers you seem to be left with a plain cooked burger wrapped in lettuce, a bowl of lettuce with tomato and tea or water or soft drinks. I was particularly amused at the offering for a 'crunchy chicken...
  17. Black eyed peas and Chex mix. Thanks to GM cereals for making this a tradition we can partake in once again!
  18. I can absolutely relate to you. Went to a team Christmas dinner for work Monday night. As it always seems to happen, the conversation seems to revolve around what I can and cannot eat. Not because I want it to but because people, while baffled by gluten issues, are curious. My team leader said, "I have a sister-in-law who has this and everyone always stresses...

    ARCHIVED Red Robin

This is great news! I went to the RR here a couple of years ago and actually left without ordering. The waiter and manager were not terribly accommodating and it appeared that I could maybe eat a grilled burger, a piece of lettuce and tomato and drink the iced tea. Decided to go across the street to Chilis where they did have options. Can some of you...
  20. Lite eggnog and a banana.....
  21. I love this thread! We visited Boston about 5 years ago, before I was diagnosed and fell in love with it! We definitely plan to go back so it is great to know that there are options out there. One thing I know I will miss that I don't think they could ever duplicate is the lobster roll. Such good memories of that deliciousness. We also loved Salem...

    ARCHIVED Chili's

Didn't know they did any kind of bread? Never seen it on the menu. And I don't know that I have ever seen much of a selection of fish either? Where do you live? Near a coast line? I wonder if their menus are driven by locale? The ribs are terrific. I also like their black bean soup. I really like the old timer's burger but I get it with a side...

    ARCHIVED Panera Bread

So sorry that you had a bad experience. It's so disappointing when you have developed a trust for someplace and then have something like that happen. Good to know that it is not the norm though. I have also heard that they use prepared dough or I would not have felt at all safe. It is actually right across the street from where I work so on the days when...

    ARCHIVED Panera Bread

Today I had an informal interview for a job with a doctor and his wife. They wanted to meet for lunch and not wanting to say, "Hello, it's nice to me you, I have a disease," I agreed to go to Panera Bread because I had heard that they had some gluten free menu items. I had a lovely cobb salad and am very happy to report that I had no bad effects from...
  25. A really yummy and safe snack is the My-Del arrowroot animal crackers and the pre-made jello cheesecake filling that you can buy in the tub. Almost as good as cheesecake. And you can throw in some strawberry jam to kick it up a notch. Also, the My-del ginger snaps are a great substitute for graham crackers when making a cheesecake. Oh, and the Bob Evans...
