The daily recommended dose of iodine for an adult is 150 mcg/day. One teaspoon of iodized salt has 400 mcg. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link If your fish oil says that people with thyroid problems should be cautious, I wouldn't use them right now. Nordic Naturals sells purified fish oil that has a very low amount of iodine. ...

ARCHIVED Caramel Coloring
ChemistMama replied to positivenrgfairy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Article on caramel color and celiacs, a good read: Open Original Shared Link She agrees with you, lovgrov. Nothing to worry about from caramel color. -
Totally wrong. The title of this thread is misleading...dermatitis herpetiformis IS necessarily caused by gluten. That is the definition of DH. If something else is causing it is not DH, but another type of dermatitis. IN medical terms, gluten is a 'necessary cause' of DH. It has to be there for the DH symptoms to appear. What the article posted is...

Glamour, If you've had the DH for awhile before going gluten-free it can take a long time for your body to heal itself, possibly months. I have sores that haven't healed totally for over a year (yes, OW, but they're slowly healing), but I had them for 8 months before diagnosis. I had it on my hands and elbows, and even after 3 months gluten-free they didn...

ARCHIVED Dh Reaction To Medicines? Vitamin C?
ChemistMama replied to PrincessKitty's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Ibuprofen and NSAIDS can aggravate DH...did he take some with the z pack? I've read several places that you should avoid NSAIDS and foods rich in iodine until about a year after you're gluten-free. I've been gluten-free for 11 months, with some very old sores still healing, and I took an advil for the first time in months and it felt like my skin was on fire... -
Their Fit -n- Lively brand does a good job at labelling, also. The thin sliced lunch meat in the plastic tub is labeled gluten-free, as well as their hummus (which is AWESOME). The Aldi's in europe stock gluten-free bread, I don't think there's a chance of that happening here. ;( I was told to contact them if you had any question about the gluten...

It's hard luck for those outside the US and Japan...I don't know what manufacturer Alba contrated to make the drug for them in the US. Many of these small discovery companies do just that, discover new compounds, and then have to license it to someone else who in turn makes tons of it and manufactures the pills we take.
-
Open Original Shared Link In brief, Shire Pharma bought the rights to make and market At-1001 outside the US and Japan, and it gave those rights back to Alba. Keep in mind that on the same day they also gave the rights to another drug back to another company. UNfortunately, it's not uncommon for companies to 'pare' back drugs that don't fit in with their...

HAs anyone tried making gluten-free Spaghetti-os with gluten-free anellini? See link below: gluten-free anellini It's expensive, but it would be fun for both of my kids to have spaghetti-os... in Germany there's a brand called 3Pauly that has gluten-free soup stars!! They're really cool!

ARCHIVED Playgroups And Toddlers
ChemistMama replied to RobynJ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You don't have to discontinue the playgroups, you just have to set limits as to where they can eat, and they have to wash their hands after snack!! It helps you by keeping your house clean, and helps your son by limiting cross contamination. Here's an idea; invite everyone over for a playdate and say you'll provide the snack (gluten-free but don't tell... -
There's actually two types of Sarna lotion, one with the menthol and camphor, and one that's labeled for sensitive skin that has the pramoxine- the bottle has a purple outline around the product name. There's another one called Dermarest senstive, the regular has hydrocortisone but the sensitive formula has pramoxamine. If you're sores are on your...

I take it you're not gluten-free right now? The only way the derm. can tell if it's DH is from a biopsy. Do you have celiac or a gluten intolerance? You should go to a GI doc and get some blood tests done before the biopsy to see if you have celiac, because DH=celiac.

ARCHIVED Digging My Skin Off In A Rash Gone Wile - Dh? Your Opinion Please?
ChemistMama replied to StacieC's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
1. If you have DH, you can be sensitive to NSAIDS (like ibuprofen or naproxen) and iodine. Before I was diagnosed I had eaten lots of shellfish and by blisters got worse. You could also try taking 2-3 advil to see if you have a reaction. 2. Go to the main DH forum page here and click on the "iodine patch test" thread, it's how they used to diagnose DH... -
Search the forums for 'iodine patch test', a quick and dirty way to see if you have DH. From what I've read it doesn't always work, but it's worth a shot.
-
I had to try to do a gluten challenge (YUK!) and I had a reaction to the gluten almost 36 hours after I had ingested the gluten, so your timing isn't unreasonable.
-
Unfortunately, it's different for everyone. I"ve read on this board that some people see relief in several days, but for me when I went gluten-free, my DH got much worse before it got better. It took me several months to see any improvement, and then I just gave up and went on Dapsone to get relief. Do a search on this board for 'iodine patch test', you may...

Yes, you'll need to be ingesting gluten for a postive biopsy (or a positive blood test), but you'll have to be on gluten for several weeks, which, if you're already gluten-free, could be quite painful and uncomfortable. You could ask for a biopsy, since the gluten does stay in your skin for awhile, but I was gluten-free for 2 months and then had a biopsy...

ARCHIVED Help Me! Trying To Start A Support Group In My Hometown!
ChemistMama replied to Brooklyn528's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Our local support group asked the local health food stores if they could put a brochure in the gluten free section for the group, then people new to gluten-free would know that a support group exists. Yes, asking the local hospital for a room is a great idea, you could also have your grandfather attend to answer questions. Ask the local public radion station... -
ARCHIVED Big Bob's Cornbread Mix Review
ChemistMama replied to Ahorsesoul's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Unfortunately, there aren't many gluten-free bread-like products out there that are going to 'taste gluten free'. Trust me on this. By the way, GFP does make a mix, it's called "Yankee cornbread". Check Amazon. PS, I actually love Bob's red mill cornbread, for me it comes out like a springy cake. You may want to try it again and not add... -
Crimson, my biopsies were negative, too. I had three done, two near lesions and one of a lesion. Did they make sure to get skin near a lesion? You're not supposed to get the sample from an active lesion. Open Original Shared Link Did you try the iodine test yet? The old fashioned way to test for DH was to soak a bandaid with iodine and put it against...

ARCHIVED Nestle's Hot Cocoa Mix
ChemistMama replied to Ahorsesoul's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for letting us know. I switched to Swiss Miss a few years ago when Nestle changed their ingredients and started adding sucralose to their regular hot cocoa mix. Ick! If I wanted Splenda in there I'd buy the diet version, thank you! -
