  1. I use real home made soap that my cousin makes for me. Real soap doesn't have detergent in it so it is not as harsh on your skin. It's just nicer IMHO. Plus my cousin made it so that's a plus. She's a nut job and like to do that stuff.
  2. Thanks for posting this Shauna. Certainly interesting stuff to think about.
  3. Maybe make some microwave peanut brittle instead of cupcakes? There are easy recipes on the web for it. Add some dried fruit chunks or sunflower seeds etc.. Coat the top with melted chocolate and sprinkle shredded coconut on it. Tamp the bottoms in powdered sugar or carob powder. Or do the gluten-free cupcakes, so boring by comparison IMHO... Eating...
  4. You can bet if there were a real cure for celiac disease that the people on this board would be all over it. Lots of things are promoted for the simple reason that they make money for the people promoting them or someone they are behind the scenes connected to. Claims made for supplements are not regulated by the FDA and supplement manufacturers in the...
  5. Quinoa is an alternative grain some people like to use instead of rice. I don't do rice anymore myself and there are others who have problems with it, but probably many more that have no problems with it. Dang it, why can't we all just be the same? Too boring I guess. I can't eat oats either, and there are some people (we are very special I stink...
  6. People get widely varying symptoms from glutenings. They are kind of all over the place. That's one reason celiac is mis-diagnosed so much. So, yes, your brother's symptoms could be from celiac with exposure to gluten. In time his digestive system and his body can stabilize when he is 100% clear of gluten for a while. It is also possible he has an allergic...
  7. If you can do eggs, cut up some onion and mushrooms and throw em in a frying pan with a little oil. After a few minutes add some veggies, peas, or green beans, or okra or whatever you like. Then crack a couple eggs in the pan and stir it up or cover and cook for a few more minutes. Add some spices or your preference and all set. You can also make guacamole...
  8. Sounds like you are getting on the right track now though. The blood antibodies tests ar etno 10% accurate, for positive or negative results. They are much more accurate for positives than the are for negative results. So it is always good to go with the positive as benig accurate but not so good to to assume the negative results are acccurate. You could...
  9. Probably not a good idea to drive or operate machinery after 3 days. Five days is the most I've done, but I wasn't much use for anything at that point either. I think it depends lot on your individual constitution. For some people a day would not work for various reasons.
  10. I have a dry, itchy, scaly spot on the front of my right ankle. Slightly raised elevation and oval shaped. I got the idea to try putting triple ani-bacterial ointment on it the other day. One brand name is Neosporin. It is too early to tell if it will go away, But it feels better, less itchy and looks better with the ointment on it.
  11. I have read that people with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis can have swings between hypo and hyper thyroid episodes. It could be you have Hashi's and are alternating between them. I think it is helpful to write down your symptoms before hand and give them to the doc. That way you are less likely to forget telling them something.
  12. Malabsorption can cause cravings. So can gluten withdrawal. If your body isn't absorbing vitamins and minerals properly, then it gets deficient and you can get cravings for foods. That might be happening to your mom. After going gluten-free and healing the gut, those minerals and vitamins can be absorbed again, and the cravings should subside. You...
  13. I support the 20 PPM level labeling. It is a good start on regulating the labeling of our foods. I don't expect to eat a lot of items labeled gluten-free under the rule, because I don't find many processed foods that fit my diet restrictions. But at least it is a common denominator for food labeling that companies can look to for planning their processes...
  14. Bushs's baked beans are ok, just check the label as they will disclose gluten.
  15. Well, is the book going to have any conspiracy theories? Can't have a good book without a conspiracy or two. Jestgar's chickens look to be involved somehow. Really a good idea for a book MLee. I'd be happy to contribute my woeful story. Do you need photo proofs of before and after poops? Proof is in the pudding. 'er something like that. ...
  16. I take a Nature's Bounty brand acidolfilus and Bifida now. I will be looking for Jarrow brand next though as they get good reviews. Sauerkruat and yogurt are used also. Here's a couple threads on probiotics: How Important Are Probiotics And Digestive Enzymes? Rat Diary Free Probiotic
  17. Just remember you need to keep eating gluten until the tests are complete. Otherwise they are much less reliable. The blood antibody tests are simple and you get results in couple weeks generally. The endoscopy is not always needed. If you have symptoms and they improve going gluten-free then an endoscopy seems pointless IMHO. Your mom could get...
  18. Sounds like you found the problem Roda. I think it would be worthwhile to look at all the ingredients in those chips and keep a list of them. It could be you are reacting to something other than gluten. Most chips are fried in soy oil, but not all. But it could be something else in them is getting you.
  19. Adjusting to the gluten-free diet can take some time. Your gut flora can get out of whack and could possibly use some assistance. You could try taking some pro-biotics and digestive enzmes to see if they help. Also avoiding sugar may help as well. And eating foods your doctor recommends is fine, but not if they make you sick. You may find your digestive...
  20. Sounds like a great idea for a book Mlee. I think a few stories from a doctors point of view would be interesting to add also. Just a think.
  21. Whole foods, whole foods and whole foods. Make big batches on the weekend and freeze portions for later heating. If you make a different one every weekend you have a nice variety to choose from quickly. I did this at first using rice and veggies and meat. Later I used quinoa, or just veggies. Fruit is great and even canned fruit is good for a snack....
  22. Lara bars apples, bananas, oranges. Planters Peanuts are usually ok just check the label first.
  23. I had bad hayfever for years before going gluten-free. I took antihistamines every day just to be able to function. I took allergy shots for about a year and they seemed to help just a little. After I went gluten-free my hayfever allergies went away about 98%.
  24. Hmmm, a little dirt under the fingernails but other wise not bad. LOL just kidding! My fingers curve like that also, I don't think it is a big problem. then again my fibula's (lower leg bones) curve too, so maybe I am just well rounded. Hmm, but then my spine is a little curved too, so maybe curvy people are better celiacs? If you have joint...
  25. I used to have joint pain, muscle twitches, and brain fog. I can't say I am completely free of those now, but they are much reduced. For me the joint pain was more a soy issue and nightshades than gluten.
