  1. Right, if you want to be tested for celiac you need to keep eating it. The tests check for anti-bodies in your blood or damage to your intestine via an endoscopy. The antibodies decline after going gluten-free so those tests won't be any good. Not that they are perfectly accurate anyway. Same with the endoscopy, you should continue to eat gluten until...
  2. Plus the other kids would need to wash up after the play-doh so they wouldn't contaminate him through hand to hand contact.
  3. The CSA has a chapter in Northern Va. Here is a link to a thread by the chapter. They have meetings in Reston, VA and have also organized events with local Whole Foods markets. CSA event thread The Washington DC celiac support group also has meetings and events locally; Open Original Shared Link These are both good groups to inform of your...
  4. I think there are some temporary immune system changes that happen during pregnancy. That might explain your not having symptoms while pregnant. Your doctor would probably have an idea about that possibility. Seems like I read a similar post on that a while back where the woman had reduced or no symptoms during pregnancy but then they resumed after the...
  5. I was a contractor working at the Washington Navy Yard that day in Dc. The first I knew anything was going on was when the Navy LT commander in our office asked me if I could find a piece of wire to make an antenna for one of the conference room room training tv's. Those TV aren't used for anything but playing training tapes normally so aren't set up to...
  6. This GFRAP site has a searchable database of gluten-free restaraunts by state or zip code. Might help. Open Original Shared Link
  7. I used to get cramps in my calves when waking up. I started paying more attention to what I was eating at night and it turned out whenever I ate rice at night I would have cramps in the legs on waking. I experimented with eating rice only early in the day, or if at night just a little of it. That all helped, but I figured the best thing was not to eat...
  8. Maybe you could try making flat breads or pancakes instead of loaves of bread. Pancake recipes don't have to rise a lot so they might work better without eggs. You can make them large and thin and use them as wraps.
  9. Food for Life bread made me sick about 2 months ago. And not a little bit sick either. I don't buy any of their products now.
  10. Here you go: Unsafe Gluten-Free Food List (Unsafe Ingredients)
  11. Hi Bobbykat, Your lactose intolerance is not surprising, as the lasctase enzyme is produced by the villi in the small intestine. So damaged villi equals little or no lactase enyzme to digest the milk sugar lactose. That can change though, and some people can start eating dairy again after they have been gluten-free a while. Some people never have a...
  12. Welcome Bobbykat, Sounds like you are in the right place. You may be surprised by how your health can improve after going gluten-free. Your vitamins are a good idea, but they will do more good after you have been gluten-free a while and your gut heals some. In the meantime some people take sub-lingual vitamin B-12 as it is absorbed in the mouth...

  14. I think 'ol JoshB opened the can o worms with his poll question, and all you strange fish just took the bait!
  15. Yep, they have names for some conditions caused by lack of nutrients, like scurvy (vit C), beriberi (vit B1), and pellagra (vit B3). And goiters develop because of a lack of iodine in the diet.
  16. I put soapy water in my stainless steel pots and boiled them for an huor or so. Scrubbed them good with steel wool too. They are fine even though I used them for gluten in the past.
  17. Oh crap, don't feel bad M-lee, I seem to have had wrong too.
  18. Hi Dottie, welcome to the site. There is lots to learn about celiac when you are new to it. But getting started on the diet can be pretty simple. Eating whole foods and avoiding processed foods will get you a long way. Most people have no problem with wines, and there are also gluten-free beers available and rum and vodka. You can find gluten-free...
  19. Hi Pepto Bismol can help some if you are in the USA. Aspirin might help a little too.
  20. The thing is if his gut doesn't heal he won't be able to absorb nutrients he needs to grow. So the first thing is to make sure he is strictly 100% gluten-free. Then pile on the meat and protein.
  21. Well, we know what answer Oscar wants to give, "Yes, I want a darn cookie now!" And every poll should offer "41" as a possible answer, cause we all know it is the answer. At this rate, we will soon have designed the perfect poll. One that everyone on C.com will want to answer! I can't believe Elye didn't say she always chooses...
  22. Ha Ha, those are some good meds! :0 I think so, too afraid to go out and look. Shhh, they'll hear u! Poor Josh must wonder how his poll question got so sidetracked. Sorry Josh, wandering minds u know.
  23. Sorry to hear about your loss Ravenwood. Dogs are great companions, they have such fun doing simple things. Chewing your shoes, biting the mailman, chasing cars, barking at the moon! Woofing at the neighbors and anyone who dares to knock on the door. Helping the cats eat their dinner, cleaning up spills and dropped food bits, running in circles, shedding...
  24. There is a view new content link at the top right of the pages. You can click that and see all the new posts since your last visit. In theory if you mark a forum as read those posts won't show up in the view new posts listing. I haven't actually tried that though. A poll is just that. You can add a poll to your thread when starting it if you click...
  25. Quite true, and sounds lovely doesn't it? Cake, mostly flour (yucky gluten), butter or lard or other fat, sugar, eggs (not bad), milk and some kind of flavoring. flour, sugar and fat yum yum! Actually i don't know if the gluten wash would work after the cake is baked. That might lock the starch and gluten up somehow. Not sure on that one.
