No E Mass / So Nh - Support Groups ?
GFinDC replied to lpjourney's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Welcome to the forum John! Try this search: https://duckduckgo.com/q=new+hampshire+gluten+free+support&t=hg&ia=web Also, we have a "newbie 101" thread for getting started in the Coping With forum section. This forum is a great place to get information on what to eat and other things that can help. Think whole foods rather than processed... -
Hi V123, Have you been tested for Crohn's Disease? I saw in another thread you said that you had a fissure. Fissures don't usually happen with celiac disease but do happen with Crohn's Disease. Some people with Crohn's Disease do go on a gluten-free diet though as they say it helps their symptoms. Three weeks is not very long for your body to...

My brother bakes gluten stuff a lot. Cakes, pies, cookies etc. I use the same oven to roast meats and other things. I don't have a reaction to things I bake/roast in the shared oven. I don't use the oven at the same time he is using it though. It works fine for me after several years of doing shared oven use. It's not one of those convection ovens...

IgA Deficiency?
GFinDC replied to Lou may's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When was trying to find out if I had celiac disease, I had a 4 month wait for a specialist to see me. So I didn't wait, I went gluten-free right away. By the time I got to see the specialist my antibodies had declined to where they didn't read positive. I stayed gluten-free anyway because it was obvious to me that gluten was a problem for my body. They... -
Low IgA, dr won’t test IgG
GFinDC replied to Runningyogi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think they say that around 5% of people with celiac disease also have low IgA production. I'd try another doctor for the complete celiac panel. There are other antibodies they can test and you might show up positive on one of them. Maybe search for local celiac support group and ask them for a doctor recommendation. -
One of the problems with diagnosing celiac disease is the variableness of symptoms. Since malnutrition and inflammation can damage so many different parts of the body, and can affect so many body functions, it is really difficult to nail down a standard list of symptoms, The most classic symptoms people think of are digestive symptoms. But some people...

Symptoms can vary a lot. Before I went gluten-free there were days I felt fine. There were also days I felt awful. Symptoms were seemingly not directly related to what I was eating recently. Yes, if your gut is irritated, any food can cause symptoms, even gluten-free foods. Another tie-in to that is gut bacteria, which can get out of whack in an irritated...

Newly Diagnosed
GFinDC replied to Emilydeaconx's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Emily, You don't have to eat a lot of gluten each day for the antibody testing to work. Usually they say a single slice of regular gluten bread is sufficient. So you could cut down on it like that and your symptoms might not be so bad. Another thing you could try is avoiding all dairy and soy for a few months. Celiac affects our ability to digest... -
Is diagnosis that important?
GFinDC replied to Coffee lover's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can get a diagnosis or not. It doesn't change a whole lot except in consideration of children or relatives. Since celiac is associated with certain genes, anyone with those genes is a possible celiac. So children or relatives with the genes might want to get tested themselves every couple of years. I don't know what your cold sores are like,... -
Neuropathy and encephalopathy
GFinDC replied to Stepherwolf's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
HI SW, Welcome to the forum! As Ennis said, nerves can be slow to heal. That's true for everybody though, not just people with celiac disease. A study found that it can take 18 months or more to heal the gut. Nerve issues could take longer. The B-vitamins are supposed to be helpful, especially B-12. Selenium is another thing to try. ... -
Confused by my blood work results
GFinDC replied to kg51's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A hair sample can't diagnose celiac disease. The correct testing includes both blood antibodies and a biopsy via an endoscopy. -
Hi Johnny, Perhaps you can ask for a consult by another doctor? Going back on gluten for a testing is called doing a gluten challenge. The University of Chicago celiac center recommends a 2 week gluten challenge for an endoscopy and 12 weeks for blood testing. http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/what-is-a-gluten-challenge/ Rather than put your...

Need help desperately now!
GFinDC replied to gluten-free girl 67's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Johnny55400, There is a group called GIG (Gluten Intolerance Group https://www.gluten.org/) that has a certification program for restaurants serving gluten-free foods. You can even search on their site for restaurants in your area. http://www.gfco.org/ It's a pretty small list of certified places to eat though. There are many restaurants in... -
Hi, Another thing you can do is clean off the top shelf of the refrigerator and use that only for gluten-free foods. Then you don't have to worry about gluten crumbs falling on the food below. Silverware can be washed and be fine to use. Except wooden spoons etc that are difficult to clean. Metal pots and pans can be washed also. The cast iron...

Hello Viajera919, Welcome to the forum! Since you don't eat much gluten, you may not get an accurate test result. Generally, it's recommended a person eat gluten every day for at least 2 weeks before and endoscopy. For blood antibodies, they recommend 12 weeks of eating gluten. So your results are kind of unpredictable, since you aren't eating...

I'm sick, tired, and confused
GFinDC replied to Vonney's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Vonney, Your doctor may not be up on all the latest celiac information. There's a reason most celiacs in the USA are not diagnosed. They used to say 90% are un-diagnosed but I think it's down to 85% un-diagnosed now. It is not a bad idea to do a search for a celiac support group or club in your area. Local people with celiac can more likely tell... -
@ CL, Thanks for the links CyclingLady. That's interesting the generic drugs pricing is being so impacted by the Indian drug companies. You must be one tough bird not taking any pain killers. Congrats! I know a fella that is anti-painkiller here and prefers to tough it out too. Not for any physical reaction reason but for some personal preference. ...

Just a warning to avoid acetimenophen (Tylenol, APAP). This link is a story about a woman who took several OTC meds for a cold and her liver was destroyed by the acetimenophen in them. Did you know they also call acetimenophen APAP on some med labels? So she took several meds with it and her liver was ruined. http://wjla.com/news/nation-world/ohio...

What you are describing is called gastroparesis I think. Basically the digestive process is somewhat frozen. Causes can very. But most likely there is some irritation to the digestive system that is causing it not to move normally. When this happened to me in the past I switched to my safe diet of only 5 foods. Then after digestion recovered added one...

Welcome to the forum markb, Ennis has it right. It is easiest to heal if you stick to a simple diet or mostly whole foods that you cook yourself. Some people find that dairy cause them problems for several months and some have problems with oats also. So to speed things up you can eliminate those foods from your diet for a while also. I see you are...

Your very quick vomiting does sound more like an allergy than an intolerance. You could get wheat allergy testing to see if that is part of the problem.

Next steps?
GFinDC replied to Felicitouschick's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The doctor I went to for my initial celiac testing was in the pediatric section of the hospital. His name is Alessio Fasano. I think that it was common in the past to put celiac doctors in the pediatric section. Finding a good celiac savvy GI can be tricky. Try a google search for celiac support groups in your area. If you find a support group they... -

Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections
GFinDC replied to NorrisSheldon's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Welcome to the forum Norris! Sounds like you have a rough go of it lately. It's not unusual to make mistakes at the beginning of the gluten-free diet. Did your doctor test you for celiac disease? If not, it's a little late to do the testing. Celiac disease testing looks for antibodies in the blood to gliaden, a protein in wheat. One you stop... -

Hi Renee, You can try peppermint tea for gas relief. It helps some people.
