Hi aya, It is possible your gi system is making more gas now. That could force acid into your esophagus and cause pain. Just gas by itself can cause pain for that matter. To reduce gassiness, eat little to no sugar and carbs. Carbs (rice, white potatoes, cereals, flours etc) can feed the bacteria that cause gas. Some artificial sweetners cause...

Son-test results
GFinDC replied to Rachq's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Right, the doctor is wrong. The antibodies are not present if the person is not eating gluten on a continual basis. That's why the University of Chicago celiac center recommends 2 weeks of eating gluten before the endoscopy and 12 weeks of eating gluten before the blood antibodies tests. They call this period of time a "gluten challenge". -
Maybe I can send some of our cats there on permanent vacation...

Time to Get Better
GFinDC replied to G-FreeBlondie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Eat meats, veggies, nuts and eggs. Skip all the processed foods and also dairy and oats for a few months at least. It can take 18 months to a couple years to heal from celiac damage. The simpler your diet is at the beginning the easier it is to identify troublesome foods. It is also good to cut way down or eliminate sugar, and carbs for a few... -
Hi, Keep going on the gluten-free diet. It can take 18 months or more to heal, sometimes several years. Try reading the "Newbie 101" thread in the "Coping with Celiac" section. It has some getting started on the gluten-free diet advice. The best way to start the gluten-free diet IMHO is to stick with non-processed foods. Things like meats, veggies...

Hi, yes, you can have an allergy and a food intolerance. Allergies are IgE immune reactions, food intolerances are IgA or IgG immune reactions. You can get tested for allergies with a skin prick test. They test for celiac disease with a blood test first, and then an endoscopy later. The celiac blood tests are: DGP IgA DGP IgG EMA...

Contradicting results?
GFinDC replied to OliviaM19's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, I think you have a good GI doctor! The endoscope can only reach about 5 feet into the body, so the doctor can't see much of the 22 feet long small intestine. So a negative biopsy from the first couple feet doesn't mean a whole lot IMHO. Response to the gluten-free diet, either improvement or deterioration of symptoms means that gluten is having... -
Hi Mavis, A doctor might say you don't have celiac disease because you didn't get the endoscopy and therefore don't have proof of villi damage. But a little common sense would say that if you are having digestive symptoms like yours, and your symptoms changed when you went gluten-free, then there has to be some connection there. Also, being skinny...

Don't want to do gluten challenge..
GFinDC replied to Bree J's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Bree, You need to avoid wheat, rye, and barley, including malt. It is best to avoid oats and dairy for a few months at the start of the gluten-free diet. Personally I would avoid soy also. The best thing though is to just stop eating processed foods for a few months at least. And don't eat in restaurants and also cook your own meals. A simpler... -
Please don't waste your money on Enterolab. They have never submitted any proof for peer review verification. They are glad to take your cash though. I am not familiar with the MC diet. But many celiacs avoid additional foods beyond just gluten. I don't eat dairy, soy, nightshades, carrots, celery, oats. Probably a few I am forgetting. Many others...

Oh, I hate to say it but you are totally hosed! You have celiac disease! Or most likely do have it. The endoscopy to prove gut damage is the final test. But don't worry. The fix / treatment for celiac disease is one of the best medicines around. You eat a healthier gluten-free diet with less processed food than most people eat. More meats, veggies...

Hi, The anemia was most likely caused by celiac disease damage to your gut lining (villi). The damage caused by celiac disease affects absorption of nutrients including vitamins and minerals. So your body will begin to decline as it won't be able to properly function without adequate amounts of many vitamins and minerals. Also your immune system will...

Don't want to do gluten challenge..
GFinDC replied to Bree J's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The gluten challenge is 12 weeks of eating gluten for the blood antibodies tests and 2 weeks for the endosocpy. There is also the test for DH (dermatitis herpetiformis) which is a skin biopsy. DH causes a rash on the body, often in a symmetrical pattern. The IgA antibodies are deposited in the skin and cause the rash. They test for DH by taking a small... -
People have reported many different symptoms of gluten withdrawal over the years. They seem to vary a lot between people. If you have celiac disease and stop eating gluten your body goes through a big change. Your immune system starts to relax and ramp down the production of antibodies. Which means it has more energy to spend on doing things like...

Not every GI is an expert in diagnosing celiac disease. Most people with celiac disease are undiagnosed, because doctors don't recognize the various symptoms or they just don't believe a person has it, so they won't test for it. It is sometimes a good idea to search for a celiac disease support group in your area. Then you can ask them for the name...

Hopefully the biopsy results will tell the tale as they say. I am on rx D myself. You can find info on vitamin D at the vitamin D council site. Seeing they just announced higher levels of vitamin D can help prevent colon cancer it's even a better reason to take some. You can get natural vitamin D from oily fish like mackeral, sardines, salmon and tuna...

Could it be Celiac Disease?
GFinDC replied to Mags55's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Mags, Your symptoms sounds like celiac disease to me. They could be something else I suppose but the testing should help determine that. The testing for celiac disease is a blood test to check for antibodies to gliaden, and then an endoscopy to take 4 to 6 biopsy samples of the lining of the small intestine. They check the biopsy for damage consistent... -
The instance of getting sick more often is possible. There have been threads here years ago about people getting sick a lot with colds etc. I think the opposite is also possible, Sometimes people with celiac can get sick with various infections less often than other people. Possibly because their immune system is always charged up and ready to go. So...

I am sorry to hear about the T-1 diabetes diagnosis. But your husband is not right about the "shock to his system" causing it IMHO. Instead, it is more likely he developed it related to untreated celiac disease. Maybe print this article out and have your husband read it. Celiac is associated with multiple other AI diseases. Some of the forum members...

The lump may be symptom of diverticulitis? It is certainly worth getting it checked on. Your GI should have some idea. Ennis is right, a simple whole foods with no dairy is a good choice whenever you are having symptoms. Some of us react to oats also so they might be something to eliminate for a month. It's hard to troubleshoot someone's diet...

Hi Emily45, Welcome to the forum! There is an enzyme called lactase produced by the gut lining cells (villi). This enzyme breaks down lactose, a sugar in milk. Without the villi the enzyme isn't produced and the dairy sugar can cause digestive problems. Bacteria love to eat sugar. So people can get gas and diarrhea. So, lactose intolerance...

Anyone know what these results mean?
GFinDC replied to Mself145's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry, not sure. Gluten allergen is not clear since celiac is caused by an immune intolerance, not an allergen. Maybe the test center can give more guidance on what the results mean.
