Celiac or not Celiac
GFinDC replied to Guy Berresford's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Right, the gluten challenge is 12 weeks for the blood tests, 2 weeks for the endoscopy. So you didn't eat gluten long enough for the antibodies to build up in your bloodstream. The blood tests were invalid and can't be relied on. I don't have NCGS myself, but the symptoms can be similar to celiac disease. The difference is there is on damage to the gut... -
Hi, It's not unusual for symptoms to vary a lot for the first 6 months. What I would do if my symptoms suddenly worsened is to re-examine everything I'd eaten for last several days. It's easy to get contaminated by something with gluten. Some companies are better at excluding gluten than others. One thing to watch out for is eating too much of...

It sounds like you are starting the healing process from celiac damage. It is not a quick thing and can take 6 months to 2 years or more. Did you get tested for celiac disease? You might still be able to get positive blood antibodies tests at this point, especially if you start eating a small bit of gluten each day. It's really hard to go off gluten...

toddler potencial celiac
GFinDC replied to nela's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The first 6 months gluten-free were kind of a roller coaster for me as far digestive symptoms and feeling better. It was back and forth, better and worse. It is important to eliminate every bit of gluten from the diet. Our immune system attacks and kills germs that you need a microscope to see. So it will definitely attack a crumb of gluten. The... -
Help me understand iga results
GFinDC replied to Annecarly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, IgA is a type of antibody the immune system makes. It also makes IgG antibodies and IgE antibodies. Typically they test total serum IgA levels as well as specific gliaden IgA antibody levels. Some people don't make much IgA or any, so the IgA tests are useless for them. The total serum IgA is a test to measure the ability to produce IgA antibodies... -
Ingredients to avoid?
GFinDC replied to Breezy1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You need to avoid anything with wheat, rye, barley or oats. Malt is made from barley so it is out also. It's simplest to simply avoid all processed foods to start. Instead eat meats, veggies, nuts and eggs. No dairy is helpful also. -
Do you have celiac disease? How long have you been gluten-free? If you are bloated, you can try eliminating all sugar and carbs from your diet, plus any milk. For immediate help, try Peppermint Altoids and Pepto Bismol.

Celiac and depression in teenagers
GFinDC replied to AmandaJ73's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, Please check out the DH (dermatitis herpetiformis) section of the forum. DH is the rash that some celiac people get. -
Gluten Challenge Question
GFinDC replied to H8 Wheat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The University of Chicago Celiac Center recommends 12 weeks of eating gluten before the blood tests. If you need the piece of paper for some reason, it is up to you if you want to continue the challenge. I didn't do it because I had to work for a living and that was dang near very troublesome while eating gluten. And it was clear to me that I didn't do... -
I doubt you have a problem from the veggies you are eating. The iron in veggies is not well absorbed. If you are really concerned make an appointment to give blood. That will lower your iron levels. But I don't recommend it since it is probably entirely ok as is. Vitamin C help us absorb iron. So you can cut down on citrus or other vit C sources...

Hmm, I am starting to think you are 34 years old! Welcome to the forum 34yom. It does sound like you are having a negative reaction to eating gluten. Yes, people with celiac sometimes gain weight instead of losing it. It happens. You are right about the testing requiring you to be on a gluten diet. But you don't need to eat a lot of gluten...

Possibly DH? Celiac?
GFinDC replied to Laurenburk421's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, You could try a dermatologist first. But make sure to check around and find one who is experienced with celiac disease. The test for DH is to take a small skin biopsy from next to a lesion, not on the lesion. Then they check it for IgA antibodies. For the regular (non-DH) celiac testing, they take blood samples for antibody testing. They call it... -
I posted a couple links in your other thread that may help.

Puffy/swollen Eyelids
GFinDC replied to alissar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, If you have celiac disease, the gluten-free diet is the medical treatment. It is the only treatment. So eating gluten-free is imperative if you want to be healthy. That said, there are many ways to eat gluten-free. You can buy all kinds of expensive gluten-free processed foods like gluten-free cookies, bread, cereals, etc. Or you can buy... -
Reintroducing gluten into diet
GFinDC replied to Mellie608's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Mellie, It would have been better to go to a GI (gastroenterologist) for celiac testing before going gluten-free. You have to be eating at least some gluten for 12 weeks for the blood antibodies testing and 2 weeks for the endoscopy. The celiac disease panel has several different antibody tests including DGP-IgG, DGP-IgA and EMA and total serum... -
Amy’s Frozen Meals
GFinDC replied to Michelle Jackson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That's great, you are off to a good start then! Some other foods you might want to check into are Mission corn tortillas. They are made on dedicated lines and are safe for us to eat. Aldi grocery stores carry their line of gluten-free wraps that are great. Soft and flexible. And bigger than the corn tortillas. When you want to get a snack,... -
Amy’s Frozen Meals
GFinDC replied to Michelle Jackson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If they are tested and certified they are probably ok now. They weren't in years ago but things can change. That is not the kind of food a new gluten-free dieter should be eating though. Instead it's better to eat whole foods you cook yourself at home. Foods like meat, veggies, nuts, and eggs. Dairy is often a problem until we have had a few months... -
Hi, it could take a couple months to 6 months to see a difference. But everyone is an individual so it varies a lot. Try reading the newbie 101 thread in the Coping With section. It has tips for starting the gluten-free diet. It would be best to keep eating gluten (at least a little) each day until you have yourself tested for celiac disease. The...

Maybe you should check what food items you are allowed to bring into the country first. Then decide. Sorry, I've never been there so no idea what they may not have. I guess they do have a lot of plastic in the water though.

Drinking as a new diagnosed celiac
GFinDC replied to Michelle Jackson's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, but they can eat more chocolate! I agree, a little wine or Tito's vodka shouldn't be a problem. But try not to overdo it as you are still early in the recovery process. Leave the heavy drinking to us seasoned pros! We won't mind! Really, you should be fine.
