  1. Hi, Maybe remove the carby/sugary foods for a few days. Like the rice, bagel, banana, and applesauce. Instead eat meat and veggies and nuts and eggs. Also try some Pepto Bismol. Some psyillum husks might hep too.
  2. It's great to have the gene test and know your genetic potential for celiac disease. But having the genes does not mean you have celiac disease. About 30% of people walking around the USA have one of the celiac genes, but only about 1% actually develop celiac disease. The genes do not automatically mean you have celiac.
  3. That's good you had them look into the kidney issue already. The urologist should have caught anything serious with the kidneys. I think the idea of taking a break from running and any strenuous exercise is good. Celiac impairs our ability to absorb nutrients and that can negatively impact all aspects of our health. Our bodies can have a hard time repairing...
  4. Hi Brandi, Unfortunately your diagnosis story is not real unusual. Most celiacs are undiagnosed today. The testing isn't perfect but the bigger problem is doctors don't bother to test people. Or they test people wrong, after telling them to go gluten-free. What's scary is that most people with celiac disease don't even have GI symptoms. But...
  5. Hi, You need to eat at least some gluten every day for 12 weeks before the blood tests, and for 2 weeks before the endoscopy.
  6. Yep, get the full celiac disease antibodies test panel before going gluten-free. the antibodies start to drop after going gluten-free so the tests are not accurate. there have been other people post about having positive antibodies and negative biopsies. Celiac disease testing isn't perfectly accurate yet.
  7. Hi Lynh1, Celiac disease can cause irritation and damage to the lining of the small intestine. That can cause poor digestion and many digestive symptoms. Sometimes people develop additional food intolerances beyond just gluten too. These additional food intolerances can be permanent or temporary. Bloating, gas, pain, C and D are typical symptoms...
  8. Hi, The celiac testing process is first a blood antibodies check (celiac panel), and then an endoscopy to take samples of the small intestine lining. You need to be eating at least some gluten every day for 12 weeks before the blood antibodies test, and 2 weeks before the endoscopy. Ask for the full celiac panel, not the screening test. Some...
  9. Hi Brogrammer, I am concerned about the issue with blood in the urine. That isn't typically a celiac symptom, although it could be in some cases. When you see the nurse practitioner please bring that up. They should probably test your kidney function. If that issue ends up being caused by gluten or soy, I'd consider skipping the celiac gluten challenge...
  10. Hi Martin, People with celiac disease seem to develop reactions to foods fairly often. Probably because our guts are often in an irritated condition. Sometimes for years before diagnosis or going gluten-free. Food reactions are not always permanent though. If you stop eating the offending food for 6 months and then try a little of it maybe it...
  11. I think they say dirt and grass is fine with ketchup! But I wouldn't know since I don't eat nightshades anymore. I am sorry you are having a problem with your kidneys. Normally for celiac we recommend a whole foods diet with meats, veggies, nuts, and eggs. No processed foods (baked goods etc) and no oats or dairy to start out for a few months at least...
  12. Hi jeannie, You are right, there is a lot of confusing information about gluten on the internet. Plenty of web sites are just trying to make money off people being sick and want to sell them some kind of gluten cure book or something. That's actually a pretty good way of telling if the web site's info is reliable. If they spend most of the web site...
  13. Hi MM, Welcome to the forum! Celiac testing for people with DH (dermatitis herpetiformis) can be different than others. Your rash could be DH, but a test will tell. If you have DH, you have celiac disease, because only people with celiac disease get DH. The testing for DH is to take a biopsy sample of the skin next to a lesion, not on the...
  14. I screwed up more times than I want to think about. Most likely you won't suffer any permanent damage from an occasional glutening. Now a gluten challenge of eating gluten for 12 weeks for testing is a different thing IMHO. That may cause permanent issues, like new food intolerances developing. But it is not something that is really known how much damage...
  15. I saw an article somewhere about olive oils being cut with other oils. The article claimed it is common for European olive oils to be adulterated like that. They also said that the rules in the US are stricter and that domestic US olive oils are not adulterated because of the rules here. So, maybe try some California olive oil and see if it causes a reaction...
  16. I had problems with rice for a while. and stopped eating rice for several years. One of the issues with rice is it is mostly carbs. Carbs are turned into sugars in the gut. So if you have a problem with absorbing sugars they can be a problem. Or a problem with whacky gut bacteria. Bacterias make gas when they eat sugar and that can cause discomfort and...
  17. Hi, The usual testing process is the blood antibodies first and then an endoscopy later. During the endoscopy they take 4 to 6 small biopsy samples of the small intestine lining. They use a microscope to check those for celiac damage. The endoscopy is probably what the gastro is going to want to do. You should be eating gluten until all testing...
  18. Hi, There is a somewhat higher chance of getting other AI conditions when a person has celiac disease. If you search for "Celiac associated condition" you can find lists of those AI diseases. I don't know if eating gluten-free would help his T-1 diabetes, but I don't think it will hurt him either. It might help if he sticks with a whole foods...
  19. Peppermint tea, Pepto Bismol if he is old enough for it, slippery elm is supposed to help though I haven't tried it myself. If you search for the forum for the word "glutened" you may find more ideas. Milk of magnesia may help too.
  20. Hi SC, There is a common expectation that people with celiac disease have digestive symptoms. But that is not always true. Often they have symptoms outside the gi tract instead. Some people have no symptoms at all and they call that silent celiac. Or people can get a skin rash called DH (dermatitis herpetiformis) or develop gluten ataxia or a host...
  21. Hi, Whether or not to get tested is a good question. The standard gluten challenge is 12 weeks of eating gluten for the blood antibody tests, and 2 weeks for the endoscopy. People with DH tend to not show up on the usual testing sometimes, so they do a skin biopsy instead. DH is an itchy rash that is usually symmetrical in nature. Both elbows, both...
  22. Hi Shad, Welcome to the forum! Sometimes we just don't get firm answers from the medical world. Especially when it comes to celiac disease diagnosis. That doesn't mean we can't treat it ourselves anyway. Once all the celiac testing is done, it's a good idea to trial the gluten-free diet for 3 to 6 months and see what happens. If you feel better...
  23. The gluten-free diet can be overwhelming at first. But in time you can get used to eating different foods and even like them. It's not so bad as it may first seem! Welcome to the forum!
  24. Hi, Welcome to the forum! It can take months or more for symptoms to go away. When our guts are damaged they can react to many foods, even non-gluten foods. But what do you mean by a strict diet? The best way to start the gluten-free diet is to avoid processed foods and instead eat whole foods like meats, veggies, nuts, fruit, and eggs. At...
  25. Welcome troykm, There probably are people out there with exactly your symptoms when glutened. Celiac disease has many symptoms and variations of symptom combinations And symptoms can change over time and get worse or better. Myself I get dry eyes from caffeine. Not that caffeine has gluten, just that it can cause that symptom at least.
