  1. Hi Meridian, A better plan would be to get the skin biopsy done from an area near the (DH?) lesion. They check the skin biopsy for the IgA antibodies that cause the DH rash. A diagnosis of DH is a diagnosis of celiac disease as only people with celiac get DH. It's not bad to get the blood antibodies full celiac panel. But the quicker way to diagnose...
  2. So, she is eating 6 foods with corn starch? Try making that zero foods with corn starch and see if she improves. The simpler her diet is the better. Whole foods are the best way to go to start the gluten-free diet. Maybe she can have hard boiled eggs for snacks? Or deviled eggs? Planter's nuts are labeled if they contain gluten. So their plain cocktail...
  3. @KEMB, Success, the test worked! When I read @username I read it as "At username." Sort of like Addressing an letter "To: username." Quoting the person also works well. @Inc, I hope you are feeling better! Inc, it seems to me you know one thing is wrong, your blood glucose was low when it was tested after eating no carbs. That might...
  4. Hi Kemb, If you click the "quote" button under a post when you reply, it will put the post text in your reply. That will let make it clear who you are responding too. Another option is to do this: @KEMB and type your reply. That also lets you direct your post at a particular member. @Dayle And the same things can work for Dayle!
  5. Right, cc is a known issue. With coffee it is a somewhat unusual issue I think, but then I don't drink coffee anymore but rarely. Maybe if you can ditch the Keurig machine you can try grinding your own beans and avoid the possibility of cc? I want to mention B-12 and D vitamins, as celiacs are sometimes low on them. But it sounds like your medical...
  6. I have seen flavored teas with barley in them. Anything that has added flavor is a possible problem IMHO, and needs to be checked. Or avoided. Avoidance is actually a pretty effective solution usually. Aristotlescat seems to be saying that the forum members don't understand the cross-contamination issue. But I don't see where anyone suggested cross...
  7. I have bleeding/pain if I eat dairy. one of those additional food intolerances that can happen if you have an irritated gut for a long time. It's great that she is doing better on the gluten-free diet. But healing from celiac damage is not a 2 week process. The recovery can be 18 months or more. Our immune systems are ever vigilant and don't stop attacking...
  8. I've spent many a night not getting any or getting little sleep from symptoms and pain. Gassiness can keep me awake even if it isn't painful. Gas and bloating are often worse if we eat carbs and sugar, or dairy. Avoiding those foods can help. It may help to try some probiotics and digestive enzymes also.
  9. The an-pep enzyme does sound like it would be helpful in some situations, like eating out. But it wasn't tested on celiacs so we don't know if it helps them or not. This is the same enzyme they use for making gluten reduced beers. But in beer making the enzyme is added at the start of the fermentation and has days to work on breaking down the gluten. ...
  10. Hi Aristotlescat, Going off coffee is not a bad thing for an ill person. Coffee puts a strain on our bodies as it creates an artificial boost and then a crash. That isn't a good thing if your body is struggling to maintain itself IMHO. Would you consider dropping the coffee for a month to see if it helps? It may or may not, all depends on how...
  11. Welcome to the forum Mike! I suggest people new to the gluten-free diet start out with meats, veggies, nuts, and eggs for the first 6 months. This diet avoids processed foods and the risk of contamination with gluten is low. Plus you don't have to spend lots of time reading labels in the grocery store! Bonus! I can tell you after 9 years gluten...
  12. Hi Leuconostoc, I agree, enteral feeding not an appealing solution. your diet sounds good, except for the soy milk. Almond milk would be a better choice IMHO. Soy has a lot of negative info about how it affects the body.
  13. Hi Ennis, Sorry to see you are still having tooth problems. Some people say oil pulling is helpful for dental health. I am not sure myself. I do find Plax dental rinse before brushing is helpful for getting rid of dental tatar buildup. Hold it in your mouth for 30 seconds prior to brushing. It softens tartar and makes it easier for a brush to remove...
  14. There was a member some years ago called glutenwrangler who had refractory celiac. He was using enteral feeding for a while. He hasn't been around the forum for years though.
  15. An elimination diet would be a good idea. And start with oats as you might be one of the celiacs who react to them. Any carbs, sugar and processed foods are a possible source of bloating too. Probiotics might help. Antibiotics can really mess up the gut flora so it needs to be re-established with good stuff. Ennis is right, additional food intolerances...
  16. Hi Alessio, Some celiacs react to oats like they do wheat, rye, and barley. So it might be worth eliminating that possibility. If you do have an oat reaction, you are esentially still eating gluten if you have foods with oats.
  17. If you are not going to have her tested now, yes, dairy is a good thing to remove for a while (several months). Our immune systems don't stop working the minute a germ is killed. They are always active and ready to protect us. Antibodies will (usually) decline over the course of several weeks to months. Antibodies are the immune system response to a germ...
  18. I hope Kristen meant leaky gut, not leaky brain.
  19. Hi Celiac 1993, Celiac is an autoimmune disease, which means the bodies immune system attacks itself. Lymphoma can happen with celiac, but it is rare. Much more common is for the celiac's immune system to attack other body organs like the thyroid, or nerves, skin, joints etc. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is a AI (autoimmune) condition that hits the thyroid...
  20. Hi Mom, Some things that might help. He doesn't need to eat a lot of gluten for testing to work, just some every day. A cracker or a slice of bread is fine. Also, Pepto Bismol can help with gut pain but check if he is old enough for it. It has aspirin in and thee say children under a certain age shouldn't have it. Digestive enzymes and probiotics...
  21. Hi Victoria, If you were diagnosed with DH, then you have celiac disease. Only people with celiac disease get DH. They diagnose it by taking a skin biopsy from clear skin next to a lesion. And then looking at it to see if IgA antibodies are present. There is a section of the forum for DH that has more info, including tips on avoiding flare-ups of...
  22. Hi celiac1993, You do need to keep eating gluten for the celiac testing to work. A single cracker or slice of bread each day is all it takes though. Gluten is a protein in wheat, rye and barley. There are some celiacs who have an immune reaction to oat protein too. Switching to a diet of whole foods of meats, nuts, veggies, and eggs and avoiding...
  23. Hi Alessio, The Dr. can do a test for TPO antibodies to detect Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. TSH levels can vary with Hashimoto's, both high and low levels are possible at times. The autoimmune attack varies for some reason.
