  1. I have to agree. I cut out dairy and gluten at the same time at first, then went back to dairy because I thought it didn't bother me. But now, I realize it does, and it's much harder this time around to wrap my head around another food I can't eat... so, do it now and stick to it for 6 mos or so. It'll be easier in the long run.
  2. I use the Pacific Foods brand for all my broths. They are all natural (hooray!) and say gluten free right on the side.
  3. The regular does have calories, the diet does not. It's pretty tasty, although I rarely drink soda. You can even find Cheerwine Ice cream around here... haven't tried that one.
  4. I made wheat pancakes for my family one day, was sick the rest of it. In the beginning it didn't seem to bother me, but I think the longer I stay away from gluten, the more sensitive I become. But I think if you were continually around flour, it would stifle your healing.
  5. The general accepted time frame is around 3 months. It partly depends on how long you have been gluten-free. Once you remove gluten, your body stops making antibodies for it. They can linger for a little while, but generally not very long. And that's good for your body, but bad for testing. And when you start eating it again, the antibody production must...
  6. It should be enough, I guess that falls into your doctor's opinion. That was my doctor's first suggestion, to progress to the biopsy since my blood work was inconclusive. The chances of having Celiac with negative bloodwork... it's not uncommon. I am definitely not alone with my diagnosis, and there are many others on here who had negative bloodwork, but...
  7. that is not routine in the US. It is recommended by Celiac experts, but at Quest labs, it is not routine. (had to edit that...can only speak for the lab my doc used)
  8. I just wanted to add that testing in children is often inaccurate. So, if your lab work comes back positive, try the diet on the children and see how they do. If you have Celiac, there's a good chance at least one of them will have it, but it's not carved in stone that they will. I had negative bloodwork, but I have Celiac. My doctor ran the gene panel...
  9. You know, I'm not sure that 2 weeks will do enough damage. I had been gluten-free 6 months and my GI wanted me to eat gluten for a month for an EGD. I'm not sure even sure a month would be enough. And then figure in 22 ft of small intestine, and the chances they would pick the right spot to biopsy... I wasn't up for that, I finally feel better. Why start...
  10. Ok... so remember that this forum is all about opinions. It is MY opinion that your nonspecific inflammation in your biopsy is probably related the your 7 day consumption of gluten. If you have celiac disease, your body responds immediately to a gluten-free diet. Once the offensive gluten is removed, your body immediately works at healing itself. That...

  12. It is definitely individualized as to the response time. I am about 6 1/2 months in and feel almost back to myself. I had fatigue-like I could sleep 12 hours, wake up and still go right back to sleep; nausea, headaches, and some joint/muscle pain that I didn't equate to Celiac, but looking back it has gotten better. I averaged about 4 periods a year, and...
  13. Have you tried a probiotic?
  14. Well, at first I though dairy didn't bother my skin, but now I'm starting to think otherwise. I noticed my face was really clearing up, then I added little bits of dairy here and there, and my face started to breakout again. But for me, it's a gradual thing. It's not like I eat cheese today and be totally broken out tomorrow. It takes a few days and repeated...
  15. That was exactly what I was going to suggest. One of the common symptoms of hypothyroidism is dry, scaly skin. It is also not uncommon to see thyroid problems along with undiagnosed celiac disease.
  16. I didn't have joint pain symptoms, but I can tell you that it took me around 4-6 months before my fatigue went away. That was the last remaining of my symptoms. I am 6.5 months gluten-free now, and I am *almost* back to normal. Many of my symptoms resolved within the first month or two, but the fatigue just hung on. It slowly got less and less until I found...
  17. No, I didn't have IgG testing because the PA that initially ordered my tests, IMO, ordered them only to humor me. When they came back negative, she was essentially done with me, and if I continued to eat gluten-free, that was my decision. The first GI I met with saw that the panel was negative, and told me that if I wanted to eat an indochinese diet, that...
  18. No, he's not being cynical. He truly is a fantastic doctor. He also knows I will walk away from him if he doesn't listen to me...
  19. Sorry to hear that. But, my GP isn't very well informed about celiac disease. But I really like her, so I'll teach her along the way. Where she lacks there, she makes up for in many other ways. And there is something to be said for that. At least he's not telling you to not waste your time on some unnecessary diet. Hang in there... the gluten-free...
  20. Well, I am DQ2 positive. My doctor says "You have a high risk for Celiac Disease and the fact that your symptoms nearly resolved on a gluten-free diet indicates a high likelihood that you have Celiac Disease." I'm not exactly sure that I should be so happy about this, except that I finally feel validated. Some thing to be validated about right? But...
  21. I am IgA deficient too. I had my Celiac Panel done in Dec 07. My new GI looked at them 2 weeks ago and said they were worthless since my IgA was very very low. He ran the genetic panel and guess what? I am positive for DQ2 so he says that with the gene and my positive response to the diet, there is a high likelihood that I have Celiac. He just never had the...
  22. Well, at least he told you to go gluten-free. But he is misinformed; constipation can also be a symptom. You most definitely can be Celiac, and with all the other things you have said, it sounds like you do. Do you like this doctor?
  23. Hello and welcome to the forum!! I am so sorry to hear about your son's situation. I'm sure other mothers with Celiac children will chime in with words of wisdom, but right now I can only offer what I know from myself. First of all, your husband needs to stop believing so much in the words of MDs. Does he enjoy seeing your son be sick??? Celiac is a...
  24. You know, sometimes I am just ASTOUNDED at the ignorance of doctors. So because there's a low incidence, you MUST not have it. My first GI told me that "in order to have Celiac, you must carry the gene." (Inferring that I didn't carry the gene, although he never thought to test me for it.) Somebody needs to take a book to the side of their heads, maybe would...
  25. Hello and welcome!! Take a poll and see how many of us had negative blood work... If you went gluten-free before your doctor visit for any length of time, even a week, you reduce your chances of getting an accurate blood test. But some of us just would probably never show up. Do you have your results? If you post them on here we can take a look at them...
