ARCHIVED Do Celiacs Have To Avoid All Grains?
Takala replied to quincy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The "Texas Chiropractor" guy with his strange notions that corn and rice have gluten similar to wheat proteins has been debunked before. Gluten is just the word for grain proteins, the part that is not the outer bran layer, nor the wheat germ center, but for us, from a medical terminology standpoint, "GLUTEN" refers to the proteins in wheat, rye, barley... -
In the United States, you need to tell the pharmacist that you have an allergy to wheat, rye, and barley proteins and they must put this info in their computers and check for it. In my state, the pharmacists are supposed to offer a consult, by law, to the customer if the customer needs it when filling a script, where they are supposed to ask you if you...

ARCHIVED Rude Nurse And Confused!
Takala replied to tallchik77's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Get a hard copy of the test results so you can see the scale the numbers were on that the lab was using, the name of the lab, full name of the tests, etc- yes, sometimes people on the phone are so in a hurry they will actually omit the full information.. Sigh. What a piece of work. Typical. Alas if you want or need more blood testing, you... -
ARCHIVED Help With My Symptoms!
Takala replied to Mateto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It would depend on what is causing your weight loss, but if you are celiac, yes, you have to stop making damage and heal, so the gut can properly function. -
ARCHIVED Help With My Symptoms!
Takala replied to Mateto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your body interprets the feeling of being malnourished as, "want blood sugar levels up now really badly give me sugar now now now fat too give me." A blood sugar spike is usually followed by a blood sugar crash, and more cravings. I have noticed in the animal world that my pets and livestock also want to eat more at the changes of the seasons... -

And if you for some reason cannot tolerate the xanthan or guar gums in baked goods, put a query in the baking section and we can come up with work - arounds, like soaked chia seeds. Other times just by selecting certain flours or ingredients, or baking in a small dish, you can skip the gums. That's great you're making the diet change with your... -
ARCHIVED Positive Blood Work But Negative Biopsy
Takala replied to nmc's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
1. Does this seem like celiac disease? ____ Yeah, that and another misdiagnosis of just heartburn-in-progress. 2. Does anyone know of a GREAT Pediatric GI in the Central Valley or Bay Area? _____ Check the "doctors" forum and put a query there. But all you really need is a great PCP who will look at your son as a human, pay attention to... -
Well, it's YOUR graduation, so you can do with it whatever you want, including celebrating it in a non traditional manner, if you wish. Perhaps instead of a restaurant meal being the focus of a get - together, you could do something else that was still fun, like a trip to go sports, shopping, movies, sightseeing, etc.

ARCHIVED Having Skin Biopsy Monday
Takala replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Don't let the NP actually do it unless she agrees to, in advance, ask for the DH testing on the samples. Walk out, if you have to. Don't fall for the, "we have to do this first, by process of elimination." These doctor's offices love to run as many tests as possible to string out a diagnosis as long as possible, then tell you there is nothing "wrong... -

Without casting stones, sometimes, it is good to stick with name brand olive oils, due to the ongoing problems with imported ones sometimes being cut with other kinds of oils. ARCHIVED Celiac And Edema (In So Much Discomfort!)
Takala replied to Emilem's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Edema is one of my ongoing symptoms when I get cross contaminated. It also occurs when I eat certain processed foods with preservatives that are "supposed" to be gluten free, but are not actually tested and certified for "x" parts per million gluten by the manufacturer, so there is no way of knowing if the item is actually mildly cross contaminated or if... -
Celiac causes malnutrition, which then affects hormones and moods - anti depressants also will effect gut function, because the bulk of the body's serotonin is in the gut, not the brain, and your gut being in an uproar from the effect of the anti depressants will further effect your mood. You are going into the autumn season down there, so your days...

Sounds like a case of mass malnourishment, to me. edited to add: just reading that makes me feel queasy.

ARCHIVED Upset, Confused, Venting, Scared & Frustrated
Takala replied to squirmingitch's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Cross contamination from oats ? If I had to guess, and this is from consuming something instead of from topical exposure, you are getting nailed from one of your grain products that is cc'd with something else, either wheat, oats. I had to change baking soda, from a company that was "gluten free" packaged to just going back to ol' Arm & Hammer... -
ARCHIVED Update And More Questions On Testing - Igg Deficient?
Takala replied to beachbirdie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I nominate this for the best answer to any question this week, succinct, but easy to understand ! -
You shouldn't be still having brain fog, first, check your diet to see if you are getting cross contaminated with gluten somewhere, and eat as little processed foods as possible. Do you react to oats, even the certified gluten free ones? Are you eating millet ? That tends to be high in probability of cc, and it really did a number on me. What is your...

ARCHIVED According To Recent Data, Gluten-Free Doesn't Seem To Be Enough
Takala replied to Gfresh404's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was so messed up, pre gluten free, I continue to be pleased with what I have at least achieved, and didn't expect. I have read literature claiming that once I had "x, y, z" problems that I was going to be stuck with it, and I have been told by physicians the same thing, that I could not make myself better with diet. Hmmmph. Do I even want... -
ARCHIVED Question On Testing And Being Gluten Free
Takala replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, sadly. You can trigger a DH attack with not enough gluten to raise your antibodies enough to show up on a test. It only takes one exposure, then the rash takes on a life of its own before it heals. And there are foods which aggravate active DH, such as kelp and iodized salt. There have been people who had negative blood tests, and yet had rashes... -
I read this story once about a local EMT who was also a diabetic. He had his medical tattoo put right on his upper pectoral muscle under the collar bone, because he knew that when at work, the first thing they do is unbutton or cut down the shirt/coat top of an unconscious person, to check for vital signs in case they need to do CPR. Sure enough, one...

That ob-gyn is so full of *** it's pathetic, and if you keep listening to him/her you're going to be minus your reproductive organs in the prime of your life, next. Artificial progesterone only (what is in the Mirena) is a NOTORIOUS bad side effect producer, and one of the known side effects is depression. So is the artificial progesterone in birth... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Deoderant For Daughter?
Takala replied to Benshell's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I had a horrific reaction to a "natural" deodorant last summer and then had a heck of a time clearing it up as it was trending to a secondary fungal infection. Since I had traces of this stuff that was still lingering on some of my dress clothes and was still getting me weeks later, I thought I was never going to finish re- laundering everything it might... -
ARCHIVED Boyfriend Has Celiacs, But I Don't - Questions!
Takala replied to superKITTIE's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
With the common genes for celiac, about 30% of the population carries them, HLA DQ2 and/or DQ8, depending on your ethnic group (some higher, some lower) and where your ancestors originated from, but only about 1% of the general population goes on to develop the disease. There is another group of gluten intolerant people which have many of the same symptoms... -

ARCHIVED Is There A Downside To The Rest Of Us Going "mostly Gluten-Free"?
Takala replied to Minette's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Many everyday cuisines in other parts of the world do not use the wheat family as the basis for their grain carbohydrates, with no ill effect. They use rice and/or corn, and then there are also beans and potatoes which are not grains but still provide the same function. The reason that a few "experts" think that fortified grain wheat products must either... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed
Takala replied to Teachermndiaz's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You may have to further tweak your gluten free diet, once testing is completed. You may need to switch what you are eating at certain meals, for example, like adding more protein and fat at breakfast, perhaps even a vegetable, and less carbohydrate. Some of us are rather insulin resistant and have slow thyroids but won't test out (yet) as deficient enough...
