ARCHIVED So I Got Blood Test Back Today Saying I Have Coeliac Disease
mushroom replied to Trinastar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, it is ingesting gluten that is THE problem; the other problem is that it can cause these nasty little other problems along the way. When they do the biopsy they are looking for damage to the villi which are little hair-like projections on the intestinal lining. If they have been damaged (which is considered to be the diagnostic standard for celiac... -
ARCHIVED So I Got Blood Test Back Today Saying I Have Coeliac Disease
mushroom replied to Trinastar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome, Trinastar. Congratulations on actually getting a diagnosis; it puts you among the lucky ones. If you are to go to a specialist (GI?) he will probably want to do an endoscopic biopsy of the small intestine, and for that you need to continue eating a gluten diet despite what the doctor says. It may be he doesn't know a lot about celiac (the... -
ARCHIVED Disability ?
mushroom replied to beksmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would think one definition would be when employers consider that your disease is interfering with your ability to perform your job duties and "let you go." -
ARCHIVED The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Original
mushroom replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
See everyone ate their rice bran this morning--the pages have been streaming out. Gads, too soon in the day to be considering ShocktailsChoctails and Happy Shakes. Barely got the sleep out of me eyes. Knickers, your mumsy is a naughty lady, and your landlord should be shot. After ALL these breakdowns in the dead of winter (Course, it wouldn... -
ARCHIVED Could Salicylic Acid Cause Problems?
mushroom replied to jackay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My sister is very sensitive to salicylates of any kind, and the negative response is generally muscular. She has to avoid all the high-salicylate foods, and really limit her consumption. -
ARCHIVED What Should I Do?
mushroom replied to katinagj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could also take along a list of some of the common symptoms of celiac disease (many doctors are not that familiar with them), like the list found here: https://www.celiac.com/articles/1106/1/Celiac-Disease-Symptoms/Page1.html You might even have of these additional symptoms without being aware of it. I would help to highlight the symptoms you do... -
ARCHIVED Very Irregular Heart Beat, Especially After Eating?
mushroom replied to mesmerize's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is a problem I have been having with increasing frequency, especially in the last few months. I cannot associate it with a particular food (or combination of foods) but it is always accompanied by gassiness and occasional vaso-vagal syncope (If I get out of bed to the bathroom). My heart will race wildly and I feel like there are jumping beans inside... -
ARCHIVED Celiac? Should I Ask For Further Testing?
mushroom replied to Ivory's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If she were my child I would definitely want more testing done, and I also think another celiac test is appropriate before you start getting into ADHD-type thinking because so many children who are suspected/diagnosed with this have problems with gluten. Now, I'm certainly not sure that that is the problem but I think it is the proper place to start. If... -
ARCHIVED What Should I Do?
mushroom replied to katinagj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Katinagj, and welcome to the forum. It sounds to me like you are a pretty good diagnostician yourself. As far back as a year ago you had your suspicions, and your doctor should have listened to you, particularly when you tested with a Vitamin D deficiency--a very large percentage of us have this symptom because our small intestines are damaged and... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Tinnitus
mushroom replied to Roy 43's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have only one ringing ear, which began after I quit eating gluten and soy (and almost all corn), before quitting nightshades and citric acid. It stops briefly, every now and again, but is pretty much constant, and a real pain. I can't honestly relate it to anything except a coughing flu that I had. -
Hi Lisa: Ever since your post I have been wondering about and reading about lectins. I gather it is possible to react to some but not all high-lectin foods?? Certainly I react to soy, corn and nightshades in a very negative manner, although now I have overcome my lactose intolerance, not dairy. I also tend to avoid legumes (I have a pantry full of...

ARCHIVED Is A Biopsy Always Needed?
mushroom replied to sandy-sas's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Sandy, and welcome. The biopsy is done because it has traditionally been done Before the blood tests were developed it was the ONLY way to diagnose celiac, and it is still considered to be the "gold standard". Most doctors, however, will diagnose celiac on positive blood work and a positive response to the diet. I agree that it seems senseless... -
ARCHIVED Just Had Blood Tests Done...Negative Results, But....
mushroom replied to capit's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello, and welcome to the board. Don't feel alone and in limbo--you are amongst friends of like kind here. The answer to your negative blood work could go two ways, which both lead you down the gluten free path. The first is that it was a false negative, which is not at all uncommon. The second is that you are gluten intolerant/sensitive, but... -

ARCHIVED Should I Get More Strict?
mushroom replied to Roda's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, I think you should check all your personal care products, cleaning products; make sure you use separate sponges and cloths for dishes and clean-up, stuff like that. If that doesn't do it, from my perspective if there were additional food intolerances the most likely culprits would be soy and corn. Those would be what I would try first, although... -
ARCHIVED Test Say Positive/No Symptoms ?
mushroom replied to beksmom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I think you probably already know the answer to this one. A positive is a positive. No current symptoms he is aware of does not mean that gluten is not harming him. Many people have no intestinal symptoms but suddenly develop perhiperal neuropathy, migraines, brain fog, or worse. I think he should be gluten free. Others may disagree. -

ARCHIVED Are "gluten-free" Oats Safe?
mushroom replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Jason, I don't think you can afford to be experimenting with foods right now. I, personally, would not risk eating oats, but especially not in your shoes. -

ARCHIVED Thyroid And Celiac Disease
mushroom replied to twe0708's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There is "normal" and then there is "normal". My thyroid was all normal, but Free T3 and T4 were "lower normal" and TSH was "upper normal". So I finally convinced my doc to give me the lowest dose of Levothyroxin (25mcg) and all values are now mid-"normal". And I feel so much better, not wearing sweaters on 90 degree days any more . -
Hi, Meghan, and welcome. Don't be discouraged quite yet, five days is a very short time. Give it another week or two and if it still persists I would start suspecting another food culprit. For me, it was potatoes. Soy also gave me the itchies, but I had a rash with that. But no rash with potatoes. Everyone reacts differently to different things...

ARCHIVED Help! Gassy After Eating.....
mushroom replied to lavendaranne's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If sugar is bothersome to you, it is possible you might have a candida problem, small intestine bacterial overgrowth, otherwise known as SIBO. Candida is caused by the yeasts getting out of whack and running amok in the gut, and they feed on sugars and carbs (which are essentially sugars) and also yeasts in bread. So cutting out the starchy carbs and embracing... -
ARCHIVED Soy And Celiac ?
mushroom replied to beksmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most soy sauces contain gluten. Those labelled Tamari usually don't, but Read the Label. Soybeans and soybean oil are soy, although some soy intolerants can tolerate the oil. I avoid it. Since I don't do soy, as soon as I see that on the label I read no further so I am no expert on this. The only one I know for sure that contains gluten is soy sauce... -
ARCHIVED Help! Gassy After Eating.....
mushroom replied to lavendaranne's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Carol, and welcome to the boards. You don't mention if gassiness was ever a symptom you had before. I ask this because for many of us this was one of our primary gluten symptoms--bloating and gas, and along with "certain" bowel issues, D or C. I have continued to have occasional gassiness since gluten free which I cannot attribute to any specific... -
