  1. I think I might know what you mean about "the bloat" when hungry. I get this sensation as if my stomach is trying to digest itself, and I get gassy and bloated if I have not eaten. I always carry a snack of some kind in my purse to alleviate this kind of situation. It could be related to carbs, but it can be alleviated with a piece of cheese (or anything...
  2. Prolotherapy gave me back my life (as I had once known it). As a result of a head-on accident where I had my right foot jammed on the brake, I stretched out or tore loose all the ligaments in my right foot and ankle, the attachments for my fibula (top and bottom), and my sacroiliac. I had many treatments, some by a doctor who was pretty much hit or miss...
  3. Lucky me, my dentist's wife and four kids are celiacs. His office is definitely gluten-free, for which I am eternally grateful, having spent several hours in the chair the last two days Double root canal today, what fun!!
  4. Most doctors seem to have been programmed to believe that the incidence of celiac is very rare and it seems to be the LAST thing they think of testing for. Join the rest of us who have diagnosed ourselves when no one in the medical profession was able to do so. Only a few doctors seem to be clued in as to its actual prevalence and the wide variety of symptoms...
  5. It is true that autoimmune diseases such as RA are common in celiacs. I have psoriatic arthritis which I blame on gluten, because it gets worse if I am accidentally glutened and has improved greatly being gluten free (although I still have to take sulfasalazine for it). The rheumatoid arthritis shows up in my toes, hands, shoulders, neck and upper arms...
  6. It seems that gluten can affect our eyes in many different ways. For me, I had poor quality tears and my eyes just kept streaming trying to lubricate them. I had to use eyedrops, but since going gluten-free they have been fine. Hopefully yours will clear up too.
  7. I googled facet arthritis and it is a form of osteoarthritis where you lose the cartilage from the joint spaces. I have problems with my facets in my thoracic spine too, but it is because they keep popping out of place and I have to have a chiropractor put them back in. Unfortunately the ligaments are stretched and they will not stay in place. But mine...
  8. I developed hives and intense itching and rash after going gluten-free. It turned out to be coming from soy; if you substitute gluten-free food for gluten you may find that most of them put soy in when they take gluten out. Or it could be an intolerance of some other food; often these show up when we eliminate gluten. Try eliminating most allergens, i...
  9. Not much to add except that it is possible to have transient vertigo which goes away of its own accord. It hit me when I was getting off the toilet at work; had to stagger back to my desk holding on to the walls. It was very unnerving. My attacks would last about half an hour and then I would be okay for while. I had an MRI of the brain which was normal...
  10. Hello Hummingbird: I am dealing with the same issues this weekend; 75th jubilee of my one-room country primary school. It is a big deal weekend party, barbecue on Friday night, ceremonies and the good ole Kiwi afternoon tea on Saturday afternoon, dinner dance on Saturday night. At least I have company--my sister is staying with us and my husband is also...
  11. Rachel, or anyone else: Do any of you know anything about mycoplasma infection diagnosed alone, i.e., not apparently a co-infection? In the 90's (of course I will admit I was symptomatic of celiac then without knowing it) I became really ill with massive fevers and chills, cold clammy sweats and total exhaustion. After a visit to the emergency room at...
  12. I have lately been using grapeseed oil for sauteeing and frying things. It gives a nice flavour and crispiness and seems to have a high burn/smoke temperature, better than olive oil and cheaper than coconut oil. Does anyone have an opinion on it, whether good, bad or indifferent?
  13. Hi, Lois, and welcome to the forum. There are many of us on here who have never had any testing done. Some of us are related to celiacs, some of us through research have concluded that gluten could be causing our problems, some of us have found out that our problems were caused by something else. And a lot of us have found out that we also have issues...
  14. I once used to work across the street from a frozen yogurt shop. Often someone would go across the street in the afternoon and bring back frozen yogurt to share. Thirty minutes later I would be in the bathroom with D. Someone else in the office suggested I could be lactose intolerant. Once I eliminated lactose (and frozen yogurt), a lot of my problems...
  15. In addition to dairy, be wary of soy too, especially if you are using gluten replacement foods. When food processors take out the gluten they often substitute soy. Soy gave me horrendous rashes and itching when I went gluten-free.
  16. Of course it is. Most doctors are programmed to believe that you have to have lost weight to be a celiac. I gained weight inexorably for ten years; have lost 28 lbs since gluten-free (11 mos) without even trying. Before, I used to try to lose weight and couldn't.
  17. Likewise, not really a helpful tip, but I have convinced myself (and it actually is for me) that everything that contains gluten is a poison. My husband and I joke, look at that plate of cyanide or (arsenic). It has reached the point for me that I do not crave all the goodies I used to love, I find them revolting.
  18. Thank goodness, yes, my hair is growing faster; she cut it too short last time! It has also stopped falling out (can't tell whether it's no gluten or no Plaquenil any more), and it does seem to be healthier.
  19. There is also milk made from hemp (Whole Foods should have it) if you don't want to introduce nuts. I found it delicious and wish we could get it here.
  20. Adding my support and wishing you smoke-free lungs! I quit when I was 29 after smoking for 12 years. My boss was my role model; when I saw he could do it I figured I could too! I do have to say it was darned difficult then, back before they had any help, but I was so proud of myself and when the time came to give up gluten I knew I could do that easy...
  21. Don't you just hate it when doctors laugh at you??? They act so darned superior and treat you like an idjit. And most of the time they are the ones who are way off base. And orthopedists are the worst You can definitely be RF negative and still have a form of rheumatoid arthritis. I was initially diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica because of...
  22. Good on ya!! Here's hoping it works for you too I have never had the stabbing pains but did used to start the anxiety bit. If you feel that coming on, try to relax and try some deep breathing through your belly (i.e., let your belly expand as you breathe slowly in, then breathe sl.o.o.w.w.ly out. This used to work for me. I also used to have...
  23. I am in the midst of a burpy, bloaty, gassy, nauseous miseries relapse, with the heart palpitations and insomnia also. Couldn't figure it out until I remembered a different medication I had begun to take. If I can't sleep I normally take a Valium, and I had had my PCP in Nevada give me a refill a couple of months ago when I was there. Only she got smart...

    ARCHIVED Corn?

You guys have so much corn over there, I don't imagine you import any from little ol' New Zealand . Garden of Eatin' corn chips are produced by the Hain Celestial Group in New York. They do not claim to be GM-free but they are organic. NZ is a little behind the U.S. in celiac knowledge and food availability, though it is gaining in leaps and bounds...
