  1. Other points to ponder: This, if you take him gluten free, will be your last chance to assess any gluten damage in his small intestine without putting him through a potentially even more painful gluten challenge later. On the other hand, if he does not get better without gluten, you still have the opportunity to go ahead with an endo at a later time to...
  2. I think if it were me, and I had the diagnosis in hand from my GP, I would blow it off. That is just the off-the-top-of-my-head humble opinion. Disclaimer: I am self-diagnosed
  3. Unfortunately we learn our glutening reactions by experience
  4. I just did a google search on testing in NZ since we seem to follow Aussie pretty closely, and there was nary a mention of the DGP, it's all tTG, although they do recommend the total serum IgA, and the EMA if the tTG is positive. This is so strange because Dr. Rodney Ford from Christchurch (a world leading pediatric GI) is a great proponent of the DGP so...
  5. No, I'm afraid gluten intolerance is not 'celiac lite' Symptoms can be every bit as bad and debilitating as celiac, and you may be just as susceptible to small amounts of gluten as a celiac. This is why we say that the treatment is the same no matter the diagnosis (or lack thereof ) -- a totally gluten free diet. Non-celiac gluten intolerance has only...
  6. Those results as worded are very confusing. Was the first test the antigliadin IgA (AGA IgA) or the Deamidated Gliadin Peptide IgA (DGP IgA), if you know??? Also, the tTG has both an IgA and an IgG version, and the second result has them lumped together so it is hard to tell which it is measuring. Regardless, it is a high score. Did they not do the Total...
  7. I was just yesterday reading about a woman who uses only baking soda and white vinegar for cleaning, even for personal care like teeth and shampoo/conditioner.
  8. Do you have a copy of the results of the celiac panel that was run? Sometimes this can provide some clues, especially if he went on to do the endo with biopsy. If you don't have a copy it is always a good idea to get one, and if you would care to share we might be able to comment. One sample is certainly not diagnostic on the endo because celiac often...
  9. There is really no way of predicting this. It can depend to some extent on how high the antibody levels were and how much damage has been done in the small intestine, and to a great extent on how strict you are with the diet and how sensitive you are to small amounts of gluten. Doctors will often retest after three and six months, but I think three is much...
  10. Thanks! Still trying to find something to eat other than yogurt that does not make me feel like barfing. Think I'll make some veggie soup
  11. I was a bit careless yesterday, and for the first time in a long time something rose up and bit me I am really miffed with myself because who needs to feel like #*&T when they could be out having fun
  12. That is such good news, that he got the entire tumor, but I am sorry he had to beat you up a little bit to get there. Hang in there - it can only get better and better from now on And no forward-bending!!!
  13. Oh, I see. Your post was a little confusing as to the times of testing. There can be other reasons for an elevated tTG, but it is more often celiac. Did they also run the DGP that was negative? This is the newest and most specific test for celiac and will often pick it up earlier than the other tests. I gather the doctor did not feel that another...
  14. Not all of us, just the ones looking for a bigger buck (of the dollar variety, in case that was misconstrued ). Some of us are still here on the Shaky Isles, in fact even in the heart of Shakyland
  15. Yes, celiac damage tends to start with inflammation in the upper intestinal tract so it certainly could have been an early manifestation. After a couple of years I think it is probably time to revisit the celiac blood work and see if anything has changed since then. Doctors tend to overlook "mild" positives, but we liken it to pregnancy -- you can't be...
  16. To the best of my knowledge, no one goes through gluten withdrawal unless they have a sensitivity to it (or I could be wrong since so few people eat truly Paleo and thus gluten free voluntarily, or at least we don't hear whether they suffer it). It is possible to test negative for celiac via blood tests and yet still be gluten sensitive.
  17. Many doctors, for reasons known only to themselves, consider it necessary only to do the tTG -- oftentimes without even the accompanying total serum IgA for validation. Yes, as your child proved, it is possible to be positive on biopsy and negative on blood screening. However, there are several different blood screening tests, and it is possible to be negative...
  18. So is she prepared to write a lettter stating that he must not be exposed to gluten, since he will come in contact with it constantly in the school system? Unless you are a homeschooler? This is the reason you need the piece of paper! Because it's so hard to keep a child gluten free outside the home without a diagnosis and without making them understand...
  19. I won't be there but will send a cream and raspberry cupcake from where I am having "tea".
  20. Good Times - Sam Cook
  21. The blood tests from two years ago when you were eating Paleo, no carbs, would not be valid because you have to be on a full gluten diet to produce the autoantibodies to gluten which is what the tests are looking for. If you are eating gluten now you should have the tests rerun. Also, did your derm do the biopsy correctly? If not, that should be redone...
  22. Normal? No. Normal for celiac, yes; totally. Constipation, diarrhea, messy poops, pain, meltdowns and other behavior issues, absolutely. You have a wise pediatrician (a keeper ) who recognizes that he probably was not eating enough gluten to produce a full celiac antibody response. I don't know if I agree with not doing the biopsy. He is old enough...
  23. Welcome Daisy. Did your dermatologist biopsy the rash itself? or the clear skin adjacent to a rash lesion? If she biopsied the rash itself it was done incorrectly and would not find the gluten antibodies. Did you have any celiac blood work drawn? While those who have DH often test negative on blood work it should always be run nevertheless. These...
  24. Last I heard the Gas-X chewable tablets were not gluten free; the gelcaps are.
  25. A wheat allergy can be tested for (although not using the celiac tests); a 'gluten' allergy cannot. It is possible to have both gluten sensitivity/celiac disease AND a wheat allergy.
