ARCHIVED Worried About My Children, How To Get Doc's To Pay Attention?
mushroom replied to Ilovetea's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Anyone would think there was some enormous reward for receiving a celiac diagnosis -- at least judging by the way doctors attempt to prevent us from getting the diagnosis It really should not be this difficult to get tested But having spent five years on this board, I know what you say to be true, and it is so sad that we have to go there begging to... -
ARCHIVED Ttg Is Back Down- Question About My Story
mushroom replied to KristinIrwin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Two weeks is generally considered to be the absolute cutoff for gluten free eating not potentially affecting test results (some would say one week) -- in which case a gluten challenge needs to be done. I would consider one month far too long for valid results. An increased number of intraepithelial lymphocytes on biopsy is indicative of potential early... -

ARCHIVED Possibility Of Food Intolerances? Suggestions Needed!
mushroom replied to jamiecasabellameeks's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You have to learn to carry safe food with you wherever you go. Always keep gluten free food in the car, in your purse, and take a meal with you when invited out to eat. Always make sure your food is on a clean plate or on a paper towel on the counter, just take precautions, cover food you microwave. You don't have to talk to anybody about it or explain... -
ARCHIVED Should I Try It Again?
mushroom replied to Becksabec82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Do get yourself tested for celiac disease as outlined above. You were suspected of having it once and had improvement of symptoms but then apparently went back on it after the birth of your child. Sadly, once a celiac, always a celiac. If it takes a test result for you to believe this, then do get the testing done. -
ARCHIVED Can Symptoms Become More Severe?
mushroom replied to ahughes1386's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hello, and welcome to the board. The simple answer to your question is, Yes, especially if you have been eating gluten free and then ingest gluten once more. This does not happen with people who are not gluten intolerant. The risk of cross-contamination in a pizzeria is quite high alas. -
ARCHIVED Should I Try It Again?
mushroom replied to Becksabec82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The values I have bolded are either low normal (as in your IgA and MCH) or below normal (your MCHC.) I am no expert and am unaware of the potential significance of these values. You should ask your doctor what would happen if these numbers got worse. As for the IgA, it is close enough to abnormal to warrant doing both the IgA and IgG versions of all... -
ARCHIVED Getting Tested For Celiac
mushroom replied to hawkpacific's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your primary care can order the tests. Make sure that your doctor uses a lab which performs all the tests; if they are not listed on the lab sheet (i.e., just read celiac panel) have him write in what tests he wants (you want ) performed. Yes, you should have the last four tests. Some lab protocols will run the EMA only if the tTG is positive though.... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Symptoms In 1 1/2 Year Old?
mushroom replied to suzischepers's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Every doctor should know that failure to thrive is one of the classic symptoms of celiac -- as a matter of fact, it is the only symptom that a lot of them have ever learned about if they haven't been near med school in 30 years. Yes, demand that she be tested, change docs if he won't. This is an important growing time. -

ARCHIVED Help. Pain In My Gut & Not Digesting, Probio's
mushroom replied to designerstubble's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm with Lisa on the digestive enzyme issue. You won't get goodness out of your foods or supplements if you can't break them down, and that takes enzymes. Sometimes gluten knocks our pancreas for a loop and it takes a vacation until we heal, thus stops sending enzymes to the gut for digestion. I take some called v-zyme made for pharmax in the UK. Apart... -
ARCHIVED Getting Tested For Celiac
mushroom replied to hawkpacific's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The following is the list of celiac tests: Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgG Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and IgG Total Serum IgA That first two (AGA) are older tests and not so reliable, thus are falling into disuse. The tests you really want are the last four... -
ARCHIVED Should I Try It Again?
mushroom replied to Becksabec82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello, and welcome to the board. You mentioned blood work done a month ago and an abnormal IgA (low). Did they do any other tests in the celiac panel? And if so, were they all IgA tests? Because with an abnormally low total IgA any such tests would not be accurate for you. If you have not had the rest of the panel, it should be run using the IgG... -
ARCHIVED I Want New Villi
mushroom replied to Sambucca's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Is one of your supplements a digestive enzyme? Often a big reason we are not absorbing our food is that we have temporarily lost the ability of the pancreas to make enough enzymes to break it down. Many of us find that taking a digestive enzyme with each meal helps enormously. This should also help you break down and absorb your supplements. -

ARCHIVED Questions Re Blood Tests
mushroom replied to blmoreschi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just a word on the biopsy. This has always been what is considered to be the 'gold standard' of diagnosis, confirming the blood test results. No doctor would give a diagnosis without this confirmation. Today, there is a little less emphasis placed on it. Even Dr. Alessio Fasano, the foremost expert on celiac, will now formally diagnose without it providing... -

ARCHIVED Feeling Lactose Intolerance, But Nothing From Gluten
mushroom replied to DistressedNewbie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It is possible that you could be a 'silent' or 'latent' celiac. That is to say, you have the damage in your small intestine but gluten does not present any recognizable symptoms for you. The lactose intolerance would fit in with this diagnosis, because the damage gluten does in the small intestine temporarily destroys the ability of the gut to produce the...- 6 replies

ARCHIVED Testing Question
mushroom replied to rjshill's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That tTG is definitely negative, and is validated by your normal immunoglobulin result. BUT, the tTG was the onlly test run. I would try to have a doctor order the DGP (Deamidated Gliadin Peptide) in both IgA and IgG versions. This is a newer test and more sensitive and specific to celiac than any of the other tests. If this is also negative then you... -
ARCHIVED Need Help With Corn Intolerance!
mushroom replied to livelifelarge24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Many of us, especially those of us reactive to lectins (which tend to exist in the outer covering of the grain) can handle very refined corn without problem. For us it is the tortillas, corn chips, polenta, etc., which has the whole kernel ground up, which cause the problems. You could test yourself with some corn starch and see how you handle it. -
