				ARCHIVED Substitution Help?
purple replied to ohsotired's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The link recipe makes 2. They were so good I had to quad the recipe. Never crumbled nor fell apart. I put them on the back of cake pans...easier to spread out individually I was surprised on how well they turned out, my dd loved them! -

				ARCHIVED Substitution Help?

Here is a quote from Carol Fenster's book, Gluten-Free Quick and Easy: "Corn lends a distinct yet mild, nutty flavor to baked goods. If you can't find corn flour, grind cornmeal in your coffee grinder to the consistency of flour. Don't confuse corn flour with cornstarch.... Corn flour is not the same thing as cornstarch." Thoughts: What about trying... -

Can't help you much but if it was me, I would use small amounts of coconut flour along with Carol"s sorghum mix. You usually need to add eggs with coconut flour. If you google it, there are threads on it. I bought 1 bag last year and still have 1/2 of it left...so not much experience, only reading about it. I don't like eggy taste/texture foods -

Ditto what RiceGuy said and also nut flours could change things but I use Carol's sorghum mix cup for cup in muffins, cookies and sweet breads in the recipes I converted. Some mixes have leavening but I have never bought premade, nor made my own flour mixes with leavening added. I bought Pamela's once. Celiacmommy is the expert on Pamela's. I like Carol's... -

ARCHIVED Any Gardening Tips For A Beginner?
purple replied to purple's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I heard about the 3 sisters but never checked into it. Glad to hear your garden is doing well! Mine seems to be alot better than after I transplanted. Its hard to know what things are supposed to look like or NOT look like. I planted when it was hot (80+) and now we have lots of rain and cooler temps but things are growing. I have 3 tiny tomatoes and the... -

What I find usually besides adding xanthan gum and upping the baking powder and soda like ranger said is: add some extra wet like applesauce, sour cream, milk, water, oil or maybe banana, yogurt or pumpkin. I most always use Carol's sorghum mix (its great). Bette Hagman adds sour cream or applesauce so thats where I read to do it. Gluten free baking batter... -

purple replied to Jamie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
One tip is to watch for gluten-free/vegan products and recipes...no gluten, egg, dairy...but some may have soy. My dd eats soy so I have not looked for soy free. You will lean alot on here in a short time -

I checked 2 major stores last night (Idaho) and couldn't find them yet...but W-mart moved their gluten-free products to the baking aisle. They also finally had 3 of the Chex cereals that say gluten-free on the box. Things are lookin' up -
I make chili often with tomatoes, green and red peppers, garlic and onions. Fast, filling, fiber, tastey, leftovers and cheap I usually make it meatless then put it on chips, baked potaotes or hotdogs for variety.

Thanks for your fast reply...I read about using Castile soap but can't get any for a few days. I have Dawn and Ivory bar soap. Thought I'd try using some melted, diluted Ivory first. Thanks! Update: I got everything sprayed. I found a few aphids, 4 flea beetles and a worm wrapped in fuzz that I squished and out came pretty green ooze! I think I lost the... -

ARCHIVED Any Gardening Tips For A Beginner?

Need help quick! I think my plants have aphids. They have all the signs and I saw a few. Been reading how to rid them. What's your suggestion??? Thanks so much!!! I lost sunflowers, beans, zucchini, cantaloupe and now maybe tomatoes. Whos knows what's next... -
You can also sneak a veggie like a carrot, into a fruit smoothy or use carrot juice in it. I forgot that I like coleslaw but can't stand the smell of cooked cabbage When I was a kid I sprinkled sugar on tomatoes or cucumbers while everyone else did S&P. You could make carrot or zucchini muffins with pineapple or apples. I hate all squash but pumpkin...

I love lemon yogurt! I make lemon yogurt poppy seed muffins. You can add poppy seeds to the cake too Thanks for posting!

I am not a big veggie eater either but I am getting alot better. I find that raw veggies taste better than cooked. For instance I always hated cooked spinach, it made me gag...when I was in the first grade, I stuffed it in my milk carton at school b/c all plates were checked to see if you ate everything I never got caught So I always thought I hated spinach...

I haven't tried it b/c of my many fillings but my dd (20) did it for almost a month and her teeth are alot whiter! She used the sesame oil and could only swish for 5-10 minutes...still worked. Michi8, its not so expensive...just a bottle of oil and if you change your mind you can use it to cook with.

Thanks for the links. My dd and I love sweet and sour chicken but I never use "crispy" chicken bits...these looks like yummy recipes to try that way...thanks! -
My dd has it on her upper arms. Her head was itchy recently and sure enough, her shampoo had wheat. She switched brands but I didn't check it (she is 17) and she kept on itching. The new shampoo had wheat also. Be sure to check if it has vitamin E, it could be a wheat source. Google the box above and you will find lots of KP info. My dd is not Celiac but...

purple replied to Silly Yak Pete's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED What To Do With A Can Of Salmon?
purple replied to shirleyujest's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ditto what Wonka said...sometimes I add any or all of the following: minced onion, green onions, lemon juice, lemon pepper, mayo, dried onion flakes, Rice Chex crumbs...just whatever I feel like putting together. Makes a great salmon sandwich...hot or cold. I usually use 1 or 2 eggs or the larger can. Here is an old and easy favorite: Salmon Dip/Spread... -

				ARCHIVED Strawberry Jam Mug Cake
purple replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I tried it once with the Simply Fruit by Smuckers and used 4 T. but it had a yucky texture. Tried it with strawberry powder and it was too sweet and bad texture so I trashed it. Have fun...at least its just a little cake to throw out or so you don't eat too much play with it and post your experiments I bet it would be good with sliced strawberries and... -
