ARCHIVED Behavioral Effects - How Do You Cope?
dilettantesteph replied to crimsonviolet's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
What happens to us is that I am usually as glutened as my son and we go crazy on each other. I don't recommend that though. LOL Try teaching him some techniques to help cope. It took me most of my life to get diagnosed. I had years of behavior problems and did learn to cope somewhat. There are things like counting to ten, going to your room etc. As... -
ARCHIVED Is Clear Sambuca Romana gluten-free?
dilettantesteph replied to SaraKat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am a super sensitive celiac and I can drink Ouzo by Metaxa. I know it's not quite the same thing as Sambuca, but it is close. I haven't tried Sambuca, I have had problems with other distilled spirits. -
ARCHIVED Bloating!
dilettantesteph replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I find it really interesting too, but not enough to shell out the $300, or really $1200 for our family of 4. I think it must be genetic because my son is even more sensitive than I am. My husband won't get tested. My daughter had a negative blood test. Lots of people seem to think it has to do with amount of exposure to gluten and it could be that too... -
ARCHIVED Joint Inflammation
dilettantesteph replied to MarkR555's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I also had bad joint pain pre diagnosis which went away after gluten free. My back used to go out regularly before diagnosis. I've had it so bad I couldn't walk without pain pills. Now it only happens when I get a long term glutening and get lazy about my stretches. What helped me a lot to keep it from going out even pre diagnosis was daily stretching... -
ARCHIVED Bloating!
dilettantesteph replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't know if you are having some other problem like fructose malabsorption or lyme disease. I know that I get bloated from trace gluten consumption. I get so big that I can't wear my usual pants. Sometimes I look 5 months pregnant. My GI said that it was from intestinal inflammation. I am a super sensitive celiac. I need to carefully wash my fruit... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Getting Worse After Going gluten-free?
dilettantesteph replied to ClevelandGuy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I skimmed the replies and I don't think that anyone mentioned this. Are you getting your daily requirement of iodine? I switched to sea salt gluten free and stopped eating processed foods so I was no longer getting iodized salt. Sea salt doesn't contain enough iodine on its own. I felt much better when I started taking iodine supplements. -
ARCHIVED Disorientation/temporary Amnesia?
dilettantesteph replied to wasabi092's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's probably worth talking to your physician about. I think that glutening can have that affect on me too. Sometimes I get so that I can't think or make any decisions. -
ARCHIVED When My Child First Went Gluten-Free, I Noticed _______
dilettantesteph replied to Gardening's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
He stopped throwing up 10 times a day. The bloody noses stopped. He stopped fighting with his sister all the time. The rash went away. He was more organized at school. He was happier. But, he kept getting glutened. It took a long time to figure out which foods he could eat. He is very sensitive and we found that we had to avoid "processed in... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Belly Or Just Fat?
dilettantesteph replied to Bookie53463's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In my case gluten caused a lot of bloating. When I went on the gluten free diet I was able to wear smaller sizes without losing any weight. My belly became a lot smaller. Things that were in my closet from long ago fit again. Also I could wear tighter things without it bothering me. Gluten can also cause urinary incontinence. With me, the longer I was... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cooking Oils
dilettantesteph replied to JohnnyOh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am very sensitive to trace gluten cc. I did have problems with my olive oil. It took me a long while to figure it out because I didn't suspect it in the least. -
ARCHIVED If One More Person Says....
dilettantesteph replied to adab8ca's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My gut issues did feel a lot better right away. Even the day after I stopped eating bread and Cheerios I felt much better. I didn't realize that my neuro issues had been caused by gluten until they went away months later. Hang in there. My husband seems to think that getting better means never getting glutened again. It's been almost 3 years now... -
At times I have thought that I had an intolerance. Then when I tried another form of the food, like from my pesticide free garden, I found that I can eat it without issues. Same with nuts that I shell myself compared with shelled nuts. In my case, some of the intolerances that I thought I had were actually problems with gluten cc. I am one of those sensitive...

ARCHIVED Nuts
dilettantesteph replied to hawkgirl98's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have had problems with nuts, but I am very sensitive. The processed in a facility...statement is voluntary, I'm pretty sure. I buy nuts in the shell and that way I don't have any problems, though it is a bit time consuming to shell them. -
ARCHIVED 3 Years On, Still Sick.
dilettantesteph replied to up late's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do you eat products containing naturally gluten free grains? Tricia Thompson recently did a study in which she tested naturally gluten free grains and found that many were contaminated with wheat. I buy my grains whole and have found gluten containing grains in them when I sorted through them. I wash the rest with soap before eating. That seems to clean... -
ARCHIVED Cross Contamination From Gluten Free Oats?
dilettantesteph replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I get my sorghum from Twin Valley Mills. They clean their harvesting equipment for two days before harvest. Nontheless it is shared and I found a wheat berry after sorting through over 30 pounds of sorghum, so I sort and wash. Quinoa I get from Ancient Harvest and also wash (with soap), I stopped eating buckwheat, but the best source seemed to be Burkett... -
ARCHIVED Cross Contamination From Gluten Free Oats?
dilettantesteph replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I also react to gluten free oats. It was like the gluten reaction, but I think that it was more severe. I had the same conversation with Bob's and did feel better when I stopped eating their products. I felt better when I switched to gluten free pantry. Now I process my own whole grains. I hope that it makes an improvement in your health. -
Before being diagnosed with celiac, I had problems with candida and I was receiving treatment for it. It wouldn't go away. Then I got the celiac diagnosis. With the gluten free diet, all my candida problems went away (as well as all sorts of other problems).

I agree with that based on my experience. -
ARCHIVED Arrowhead Mills And Cross Contamination?
dilettantesteph replied to MissPatient21's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have had reactions to some of their products, before I learned about shared processing equipment. I think that it depends on how sensitive you are. I am very sensitive. -

Sick Just By Touching Or Smelling Gluten
dilettantesteph replied to CassandraMae1985's topic in Super Sensitive People
Some celiacs are more sensitive to low levels of gluten than others. My son and I are both very sensitive. We couldn't get better until our whole household went gluten free. The other members of our household were very careful, certainly more careful than young children (sorry young children) and we still kept getting sick. Many celiacs do fine with a... -
ARCHIVED Pregnancy To Term And Undiagnosed Celiacs
dilettantesteph replied to T.H.'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think I have had celiac disease as long as I can remember. I missed a lot of school growing up. I was diagnosed with IBS in my late teens due to bad stomach pain. I was having uncontrolled diarrhea by my late 20's. (i.e. going elsewhere than the toilet) Nevertheless, I had two normal pregnancies with healthy babies. My son was almost 9 pounds. I also... -
ARCHIVED Very Depressed, Suggestions....
dilettantesteph replied to Lindsay630's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I haven't read about it either. I just experienced it. I just googled iodine and depression and came up with a bunch of stuff, though. My son (age 13) has DH, and we were worried about supplementing him with iodine. Then again, if there is no gluten in his diet, the iodine shouldn't affect the DH right? So we tried it. He found that the iodine made... -
ARCHIVED Whal Else Could Be Wrong?
dilettantesteph replied to Demby Flex's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you seen this? Naturally gluten free grains can be contaminated. Are you eating any processed grains? Like pasta? It could be contaminated too. I buy my grains whole, sort, wash, dry and grind myself. I am very sensitive to low levels of gluten.
