  1. I thought food was supposed to stay about 24 hours in the intestine before being eliminated. I hour seems like what I was suffering before when I had my uncontrollable diarrhea. My GP knew I had it and told me it was consistent with IBS. I could barely leave the house and it is a typical symptom of advanced celiac disease. I could have gotten a diagnosis...
  2. I noticed a big personality change too. It comes back somewhat when I get glutened, unfortunately. I didn't know how sick I was until I got better. I am much nicer to my kids off gluten.
  3. I second the prune suggestion. Figs also work and give you some variety. Also be sure to drink enough water.
  4. My GI doc told me that he thought most cases of refractory sprue were celiacs that are sensitive to low levels of gluten. I can't eat processed gluten free foods. I stick with unprocessed fruits, vegetables, wild fish, and whole grains, sorted and washed.
  5. I've been glutened by mushrooms before. I'm very sensitive, but I could probably happen to a less sensitive celiac too. They can be grown on straw and with all those gills, hard to wash thoroughly. I love them, but I stopped eating them.
  6. I've been using tape. A glue stick is a better idea.
  7. I had the problem when I was first diagnosed that I reacted to things that other celiacs on this forum said that they ate with no trouble. After getting sick multiple times, I finally realized that I was more sensitive to trace gluten than some of these other people. Just because they could eat it didn't mean that I could eat it. Cross contamination is...
  8. I hope it works out. I recently cut out all grains including rice. My son eats the same diet as me and also has celiac disease and was having DH. It went away when we cut the grains and a bunch of other stuff out. I think I improved slightly, but not much. We are currently doing challenges to figure out what it was. Haven't gotten to the rice yet.
  9. I heard somewhere years ago that they should get half their grade. They also get money that goes straight into their college fund. With this money they buy things like video games. gifts, and my 15 year old daughter gets extra clothes. I buy her what she needs and she gets what she wants above that. She has gotten really good about watching for sales...
  10. I think that it could be a symptom of celiac disease. My periods got heavier as my symptoms became worse in the years leading up to diagnosis. I could go through a super tampon in 15 minutes. After 3 years gluten free, I don't need those super tampons anymore. Then again, I'm 50 and probably on my way out as far as periods go.
  11. My son was diagnosed at age 10 by response to diet. His doctor sends notes to the school based on this and they comply. He didn't need a gluten challenge/biopsy.
  12. With me, it wasn't age, and I'm 50. It went away slowly. Now, I went riding with someone 10 years younger with whom I'm training, and I did better than she did. It also took some fine tuning of my diet. Be patient and check your diet carefully. It is so nice to be athletic again after having no energy for many years. I have been keeping a rowing log...
  13. Depression has been a big sign of glutening for me too. If it weren't for my kids, I don't know if I'd even be here anymore. But, you have something to look forward to. After three years I haven't felt that way for a long long time. I'm not sure if it is that I have gotten better with the diet, or that I don't react as badly anymore. The good thing is...
  14. I can't eat the pre-packaged gluten free ones. I grind my own. I don't want to go without baking either. I love my cookies and bread.
  15. A representative from Amy's Food told me that they test everything to 5 ppm. Certainly 5 ppm is very small. Yet, you can read lots of posts on this forum from people who react to Amy's food. I have reacted to it. I guess it isn't so small after all.
  16. They aren't O.K. for me. That includes the ones from Australia. We get some here in the U.S. I can eat grains if I sort and wash them first. Do they use shared harvesting equipment in Australia too?
  17. With me it wasn't other food allergies, with the exception of oats. It was sensitivity to small amounts of gluten. Whatever it is, it would work to go on some for sure safe diet consisting of unprocessed foods so that you don't have to worry about cross contamination. You should be able to get healthy within a week or so. Then you can add foods on a week...
  18. I believe you. My son and I are both very sensitive to low levels of gluten. Just now we are doing elimination/challenges for him as he has been suffering from DH for some time. When it got to the throwing up every day too, he eliminated anything the slightest bit questionable. He is on a few safe fruits and veggies and eggs and it went away. We added...
  19. You could try limiting your processed foods and see if that helps. It helped me. I get fatigue/low energy as a glutening symptom.
  20. I still think that I have been glutened by licking envelopes. Since the adhesive is made from corn, I wonder if I could have been reacting from wheat contamination of the corn.
  21. I got badly glutened when I threw out my old flour. Some poofed up and I must have inhaled some though I tried my best not to. It can definitely get you that way.
  22. Personally, I would consider rice flour and olive oil to be processed. Even meat cuts are processed, they are cut up by someone, and you don't know what the conditions are. I would go for just fruits and veggies and eggs, carefully washed, or even better peeled, for a week. Better still would be ones from your own garden with no pesticides or wheat cover...
  23. Some of us, myself included, are more sensitive to low levels of gluten than others. You might want to try only eating gluten free food that comes from gluten free facilities. Even better would be a diet of only unprocessed foods.
  24. Either could be contaminated. It depends on how they were handled during processing and packaging.
  25. I am super sensitive. I eat very few processed foods, and no processed grains. I do let the non celiacs in the house have them though. A slight contamination from a slight contamination seems to be too tiny to bother me or my son, the two super sensitive celiacs in the family. We do make the non celiacs wash hands and brush teeth (for kissing) when they...
