ARCHIVED Wishbone Fat Free Ranch
rosetapper23 replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
My guess is that it contains soy. Soybean oil can be found in almost every salad dressing on the market (and mayo, etc.). It never fails to cause the big D with me....so I simply stay away from all processed foods--especially salad dressings! I just make my own. -
Lactose intolerance does not involve the same immune response as with celiac. With celiac, gluten causes the junctures between cells in the small intestine to remain open so that large molecules can pass through the intestinal wall, which causes an immune response. The two conditions are quite different.

I understand where you're coming from--I also rebelled against this diet at first. It took me probably close to four years before I realized that I was negatively affecting my health by not being truly careful with my diet. I even used to occasionally "cheat." It finally took a very nasty experience with Dermatitis Herpetiformis combined with the inability...

ARCHIVED Gluten Flam Pills
rosetapper23 replied to Michelle L's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is a sham--I'm sorry. Currently, there is nothing that makes gluten disappear or get broken down if you have celiac disease. Now, if you're simply gluten sensitive, I don't know. Products have been cropping up for years stating that they can help us tolerate gluten better...but these claims are simply not true. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free For A Week Terrible Stomach Pain?
rosetapper23 replied to HairBearsandCares's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Did you start substituting your regular processed foods for gluten-free processed foods? If so, you may be sensitive to the flours (especially soy) and the gums that are used. Many here would suggest that you eliminate both soy and dairy from your diet for a while, because many celiacs are unable to tolerate them. Others are unable to tolerate oats, even... -
Like the previous poster, I agree that she may be suffering from nutritional deficiencies (especially B vitamins). There is also the possibility that she is reacting to any hormonal treatment she may have been given in the hospital or afterward. Is she on some type of hormonal treatment for her previous bout with cancer? I can state from experience that...

ARCHIVED Potlucks - "luck Of The Pot"
rosetapper23 replied to cmoore's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, I agree that potlucks are downright evil! Even when I'm VERY careful, I sometimes end up getting glutened. A word of caution about enchiladas: only certain brands of enchilada sauce are gluten free, and even one brand offers gluten-free varieties for the mild and medium-spicy but its spicy version is NOT gluten free. Also, sometimes a cook will use... -
ARCHIVED University Of Maryland Center For Celiac Research
rosetapper23 replied to BabsV's topic in Doctors
I believe that's where Dr. Alessio Fasano practices...and he's one of the world's leading authorities on celiac disease. You're SO lucky to have an opportunity to be seen by the best! -

Oh, this is good news! I hope that nutritional elements will be the only thing they find. Hooray for good medical care! -
ARCHIVED Toddler Just Diagnosed Today
rosetapper23 replied to GFisTheWayToBe's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Unfortunately, the change must be immediate and total--absolutely no gluten for the rest of her life (unless a vaccine or other medication finally becomes approved for treating celiac). Usually, the best way to start on a gluten-free diet is to eat only fresh, natural foods (e.g., meats, vegetables, eggs, fruits, nuts, rice, potatoes, etc.). I know it's... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Need Gluten Free Food - Cincinnati, Ohio?
rosetapper23 replied to Chalula88's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
If you're unable to find enough takers, please remember that there are people with celiac who can't afford food who go to food pantries...only to find very little they can eat, even though it's free. Every holiday season, I package up several bags of gluten-free food and mark them as such before dropping them off at the Food Bank. Leading celiac expert... -
ARCHIVED Steel Cut Oats And "gluten Free" Products
rosetapper23 replied to Rat's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Here's my two cents' worth--many people with celiac canNOT tolerate oats, regardless of whether they're gluten free or not. I knew of this intolerance by the age of nine without knowing I had celiac. Oats give me gas, cramps, and an overall sick feeling. The advice about eliminating or curtailing iodine is excellent--this will definitely help with the... -
ARCHIVED Acne Since Going Gluten Free?
rosetapper23 replied to Merriweather's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Are you certain it's acne? Sometimes when we go gluten free, the slightest cross-comtamination will then cause Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH) to occur. When it occurs on the face, it's oftentimes mistaken for acne. I recently got glutened and noticed that I was beginning to get "acne," only to discover after 10 days that what I actually had was DH (like... -

rosetapper23 replied to SarahJimMarcy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree with ravenwoodglass--this doesn't sound like a gluten-exposure problem (and it doesn't sound like ataxia); however, gluten has been known to cause neurological and muscle problems. This could be something else, though (and I can think of two possibilities), and I agree that your daughter needs to be evaluated very soon by a doctor. Please let us... -
ARCHIVED Behavior Issue's Getting Worse Gluten Free?
rosetapper23 replied to jenn42's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It could be cc...or it could be that she's also intolerant of dairy or soy; however, another possibility is that she is now able to absorb hormones. A 12-year-old will be producing an increased amount, and if she was unable to adequately absorb them previously, the rush of hormones may be unexpected and confusing. This is only one possibility. -

ARCHIVED Confused...
rosetapper23 replied to shan11180's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Excellent responses! I just wanted to add that if your gastro-enterologist does a biopsy and the pathologist concludes that your biopsy is negative for celiac, this is very common. There's a high rate of false negatives for celiac biopsies, and the blame can usually be attributed to incompetence on the part of either the gastro, the pathologist, or both... -
A number of people on this forum would disagree with me, but I believe Dr. Vikki Petersen, who wrote a book on gluten intolerance. She claims that the immune system can become confused while it is healing from gluten intolerance and begins mistaking other, non-gluten-containing foods for gluten (cross-reactivity). She has stated that it takes a minimum...

Sorry, no, my daughter and I have never used an anti-fungal mouthwash. My daughter tried many different kinds of canker sore medications with varying results. During chemo, I used a type of mouthwash that is prescribed for the condition (it wasn't thrush). In the end, I lost all of the mucosal lining in my mouth and on my gums...and one by one the crowns...

ARCHIVED C-Section Due To Celiac?
rosetapper23 replied to Rachel W's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hmmmmm....I had both of my children naturally...and without complications. I don't know what she's talking about! -
It may be that you're simply suffering from stomatitis caused by celiac. My daughter suffered with this condition for many years, even though she refuses to get a test for celiac. My son is diagnosed as having celiac, and my daughter has had many symptoms since she was three years old....but she says she has no intention of following a gluten-free diet...

I think pricklypear is correct--the mouthwash may have caused thrush. That's what occurred to me (and, sorry--I only just saw this posting). Your immune system sounds so out of balance at the moment.....I sure hope things begin turning around for you soon.

I take Co-Enzyme Vitamin B Complex by Country Life. That's really helped me, since my B vitamins were out of whack. -
If there's any chance that the blisters on your lips are actually cold sores, try taking 5,000 mg of L-Lysine twice a day. Not only will they go away, they'll stay away (in 99.9% of the cases, according to studies). I used to suffer from cold sores at the drop of a hat, but I haven't had a recurrence in nine years because of the daily L-Lysine.

It sounds as though you're taking the right supplements, but if your eyes are sensitive to light, you may have a Riboflavin (B-2) deficiency. Since you respond well to B-12, perhaps one or more of your other B vitamins are also deficient. Here's a good website to look up the symptoms of nutritional deficiencies: Open Original Shared Link I've also...
