  1. Thank you so much for the update--I've wondered over the past month if your daughter's problems had been resolved. It's good to know that she's on the path to good health once again and that you found a caring doctor.
  2. IrishHeart, No need to be afraid--I think we pretty much all share that particular opinion! It's funny, some of their other products are pretty good (crackers and lasagna noodles), but they just can't seem to make bread.
  3. Triumph Dining's newsletter had a story on this yesterday, too. Kind of creeps me out that a chemical company like Dow would bother with finding a gluten-free substitute....and I sure hope that it really IS the result of vegetable matter manipulation and not something chemically unnatural involved. I did order a sample, though it looks as though the samples...
  4. sillyken, If you follow the primal diet stringently, a weight loss of 5-10 pounds per week is doable. I have to admit that I only follow the regimen closely about four days a week, and then I cheat the rest of the time. However, when I get serious and follow the diet strictly for a week, I always drop at least five pounds. So far, I haven't gained the...
  5. I'm so very sorry that your life is difficult right now. You're right that having celiac in the U.S. garners very little assistance from the government. At a conference I attended five years ago, Dr. Alessio Fasano (a leading celiac expert) stated, "Woe to the American who has celiac and is poor." He said this because the food banks generally don't provide...
  6. Yes, please get your Vitamin D levels checked. My mother's celiac was triggered when she was five months pregnant with me....and I was born with Ricketts because she was Vitamin D deficient. Also, folic acid is very important when pregnant.
  7. Try checking out www.marksdailyapple.com--this is a great site for navigating the paleo diet.
  8. I favor Redbridge and Bard Tale's Dragon's Gold.
  9. This is my pain reliever of choice, and I've never had a problem with it (and I'm very sensitive to gluten). You might try looking up drugs on www.glutenfreedrugs.com when you have concerns. However, I oftentimes call the manufacturer, too, just in case.
  10. I actually visited my daughter last November, and the next time I visit, we plan to fly to Melbourne for a few days. My daughter says it reminds her of Europe. Yes, Australia is far superior to the US when it comes to restaurants that are willing to accommodate people with gluten sensitivity. In Cairnes, I was able to order hamburgers with gluten-free...
  11. Amber, I hadn't realized that you'd responded personally to my posting...until now. My daughter lives four blocks from Bondi Beach. Whenever I visit her, I'm always astounded that the neighborhood bakeries offer gluten-free pastries, muffins, and breads.
  12. It's interesting to read that your trigger foods all appear to have salt in them. I suspect that you might be sensitive to iodine (most salt used in products and at restaurants tends to be the iodized variety). A number of us who have celiac also suffer from Dermatitis Herpetiformis, which are blisters that form on our skin when we ingest gluten; however...
  13. I suffer from esophageal spasms whenever I inadvertently ingest gluten, and your symptoms sound similar. I'm able to get them to subside by slowly sipping a cool glass of liquid (wine works best, since it also relaxes the muscles).
  14. Yes, I agree that your thyroid might be out of whack, which is really common with celiac. It comes with brain fog, fatigue, sleep problems, and failure to lose weight. Personally, I also get sore joints. However, you may also have a manganese (not magnesium) deficiency or other deficiency that is affecting your muscles, and possibly your tendons and...
  15. It could be that you're reacting to either xanthan gum or guar gum--that's a common complaint. I can't eat baked goods that have a lot of either gum.
  16. With regard to restaurants, if a server and/or chef does not understand what gluten is or how cross-contamination works, I get up and leave without ordering. When I was newly diagnosed, I was too shy to do that and regretted it later. Also, it's not always the establishments where English is not well understood, because oftentimes they are quite well versed...
  17. Ha ha! Yeah, you're right--I do have a rather kissy family! Point well taken...
  18. I was diagnosed with celiac back in 2004, and I continued to have a weight problem regardless of following a gluten-free diet. It wasn't until last year when I read, "Primal Body, Primal Mind," that I finally found out what was causing my weight problem: I wasn't consuming enough healthy saturated fats and I was eating too much fruit and other carbs. Humans...
  19. I just wanted to add that you also need to be careful about kissing Aunt Marge, Grandma, and any and all nieces and nephews because they're sure to have gluten on their lips, cheeks (where they've been kissed by others), and hands. People will understand if you air-kiss or hug tightly rather than give a big smooch. Be sure to carry wipes with you to clean...
  20. Josh, almost everyone on this Forum understands where you're coming from--after we either figured out we had celiac or were actually diagnosed with it, we informed our families and especially targeted those relatives who we just KNEW had celiac. We thought we were saving them all from a lifetime of pain and suffering....but, you know what? They didn't want...
  21. Happy Mum's Day to all of you wonderful mothers Down Under! I know that you're celebrating your Mother's Day today, while we in the U.S. will be doing so tomorrow. My daughter, who lives in Sydney, sent me some of your lovely Butterfingers shortbread cookies and Haigh's chocolates, so I'm thoroughly enjoying my entire weekend! You have no idea how lucky...
  22. How very sweet--thank you! I'm experiencing a very happy gluten-free Mother's Day weekend--along with other fun staff, I took my mom for gluten-free raspberry-with-white-chocolate cupcakes at Aunti Gluten's Bakery in Pleasanton (great cupcakes!!), and when I got home, I found a care package of various gluten-free cookies and chocolates from my daughter,...
  23. Welcome! And please don't worry about the ravioli and beer--there are some excellent gluten-free products that taste just like the gluteny ones. I love the gluten-free cheese ravioli I purchase from Imori, and there are many gluten-free beers that I like as much--if not more--than the ones containing barley or wheat. I especially like Redbridge. You'll...
  24. Yes, yes, YES! If your immune system has been suppressed because it's been reacting to gluten, you will definitely get sick a lot. Before I knew I had celiac, I was sick 75% of the time--no kidding!
  25. He may be getting cross-contamination from the toys that other children have touched...or even from the table surface. Also, he may be experiencing additional food sensitivities. You might try eliminating dairy, soy, and oats to see if any of these foods are causing his problems. These are the common trouble foods for people with celiac, but he may have...
