  1. pianoland, Please try eliminating iodine in your diet for a while--you might be surprised to see your "acne" disappear.
  2. Okay, my experience is probably WAY different from yours, since your original PET scan showed nothing. My breast cancer recently metastasized to the lymph nodes in my neck and chest. One of the symptoms was shortness of breath and difficulty breathing, in general, because one of the lymph nodes near my thyroid was pressing on my windpipe. My symptoms have...
  3. Your description DOES sound like DH to me--at least, that's how it always presents in my case. For me, an outbreak occurs when I get even the slightest gluten contamination, but it sticks around for a few months because my thyroid medication contains iodine. You see, DH usually needs BOTH gluten and iodine to cause an outbreak. I mentioned on another thread...
  4. Yes, these donuts are the BEST! I especially like the cinnamon-sugar ones--they have the same consistency and taste as my mom's homemade donuts. She used to make them about twice a year, and they were soooo tasty. I also like the caramel-frosted ones, but I think they must use grapefruit or something in them, because they give me the same migraine that...
  5. Yes, she definitely needs to go 100% gluten free, and she should also remove iodine from her diet for a few months so that the rash will clear up. For many of us, gluten lights the fire and iodine lets it continuously burn. She should avoid iodized salt, salty snacks (chips, popcorn, crackers, fries, etc.), seafood, asparagus, and milk products other than...
  6. It was just those few times. My body goes completely crazy if I accidentally ingest the smallest quantity of gluten now. One of my feet will never be the same, so even though I was a lifelong runner, running is no longer something I can enjoy. Plenty of people on this forum can attest to how sick gluten makes them now that they've been gluten free for...
  7. If it's any reassurance to you, processed foods are less commonly served there. I have a friend who lived in St. Petersburg for many years, and all the dishes she prepares are naturally gluten free. The Borsch should be gluten free, so if that's the only dish offered, you should be okay. But, really, I think you'll be able to find enough to eat that is...
  8. Geez....those "doctors" don't know what they're talking about!! They are most definitely NOT experts, and you shouldn't listen to them. I'm a perfect example of why you should never, ever ingest gluten. I, too, thought it might be okay to cheat occasionally, and I even read an article that said that after the small intestine heals, some people could...
  9. Wow, what a "friend"! I have to admit that I haven't actually lost any friends, but "certain" friends will no longer ask me to go out to lunch. I used to have lunch out with my colleagues at work on Fridays, but now they no longer invite me....which is probably best, because they like to split the bill evenly, and my gluten-free meals always cost a lot...
  10. It could be that you're sensitive to soy or one of the gums used in gluten-free baked goods (xanthan gum and guar gum)....or, alternatively, you may be sensitive to one of the gluten-free grains used in baked goods.
  11. Thanks for the reminder, IrishHeart...but I'm not feeling well these days, so I chose the lazy way out. The product that seems to work the best for me is NeoCell Super Collagen.
  12. Although you're having a good response, you might also consider taking a collagen supplement--it can do wonders. My hair looks great now.
  13. I can't speak to any possible allergies you might have to something in Bob's Red Mill, but the throat tightness is reminiscent of how I feel if my thyroid is not functioning well. Also, there are lymph nodes on either side of your thyroid gland that, if swollen, can press on the thyroid and make you feel as though you're being strangled. Has a doctor examined...
  14. I'm self-diagnosed and began eating gluten free immediately upon figuring it out. I felt so much better, I then took my 15-year-old son to the doctor to get HIM tested for celiac, since he'd always had the same symptoms that I did. His blood test was positive, and that was good enough for me. When I presented my case to a gastro-enterologist, he agreed...
  15. I agree--I could LIVE at Disneyland year round and be a happy camper. I wish I could just move into the Disneyland Hotel and take up residence. The gluten-free food is abundant and tasty--and I've never felt safer. As for reservations, it's advisable to make reservations for dinner at the nicer restaurants. Then the chef can be alerted to come out and...
  16. There's a LONG Aussie thread on this forum that has been going on for years, and those folks have LOTS of information to share. My daughter is a permanent resident in North Bondi, and I visit her every year. You are so very lucky to live in such a wonderful place where people with gluten intolerance are treated like normal folks. Geez, sandwiches, pizzas...
  17. Ha ha! But, yeah, I definitely don't have that! I have a normal-looking head--really......
  18. Yes, you understood correctly--I grew a full inch between 24 and 25. The same happened for my son. In fact, even though two of my siblings refuse to get tested for celiac, they also grew an inch in their 24th year. Before I found out I had celiac, I just assumed it was an inherited thing. Regarding feet, I don't know if my feet grew because of pregnancies...
  19. I could have written your post a year ago--I was a lifelong jogger and ate a diet high in vegetables and fruits....and, yet, I had gained weight since going gluten free. I was absolutely mystified and read everything on the planet to help me find the answer. What I finally discovered is that I wasn't eating enough healthy fats and protein. I thought I...
  20. I don't know about the bloating part, but it took a full 18 months before I began to feel somewhat "normal." For me, the bloating was the first symptom to disappear, since bloating tends to indicate that you've eaten something that you can't digest or tolerate well. Yes, you may have additional sensitivities, but only time will tell what they are. I suppose...
  21. Okay, my personal suspicion is that you might be sensitive to soy. For me, that means lots of digestive pain...to the point that I always think I have appendicitis and need to be driven to the hospital emergency room (first time that I ate it, that's exactly what I did, too). Were the gluten-free waffles Van brand? If so, they use soy flour (which is...
  22. I'm 5'8-1/2", and my husband is 5'11". Also, yes, my son is now 6'4". My son and I both grew an inch from age 24 to 25. When I was 24, I was measured by my college gym teacher, my employer's doctor, and my personal physician, and one year later, they all measured me at one inch taller....so I believe the data to be correct. I should mention that there...
  23. Could you please describe the diet you've been following? What exactly do you eat during the day? Perhaps that would shed some light on this mystery, and I know that many of us here would like to help you. Also, what supplements are you taking?
  24. squirmingitch is absolutely correct! With the testing process still so mysterious to most doctors, it's difficult to get a correct diagnosis. Also, of the many people I have met with either celiac or gluten sensitivity, I've noticed that the ones who were diagnosed with sensitivity largely complained of anxiety, depression, and other neurological difficulties...
  25. I know that the appearance of DH can vary, but I'm wondering if your lesions also hurt. DH causes neuralgia, which means that it feels like a herpes sore (hence, the term "herpiformis")--it both itches and hurts. Also, are your lesions pretty much in the same spot on both sides of the body? Not all DH is symmetrical, but it usually is because it's a systemic...
