ARCHIVED The Healing Process...mucus...etc
rosetapper23 replied to 123glldd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
All I can say is that I've been glutened by paprika several times....and it was AWFUL!!! I read an article a few years back that said that gluten plus peppers can cause a particularly terrible reaction, and I've found this to be true. Since then I just always avoid spicy peppers. You can have flavor without peppers--really! -
ARCHIVED 2 Year Old With Dermatitis Herpetiformis
rosetapper23 replied to kris2231's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you do wish to have an official diagnosis, I agree with Karen that your toddler will need to be fed gluten for a while so that a dermatologist can do a biopsy. However, if you choose this route, you should do a little research to make sure that the dermatologist you take him to has past experience with DH biopsies. Most do NOT have experience and will... -
At recent celiac conferences, speakers have emphasized that celiac disease may be classified as a neurological disease and not just a disease of the gut. You might use a keyword search on celiac and neurological symptoms to come up with some recent medical articles to show your doctor. Anxiety is definitely a symptom of celiac disease, as are depression...

ARCHIVED Anybody In The Bay Area Or Nearby?
rosetapper23 replied to grodeylocks's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, I'm not super-close to you, but I live in Martinez in the East Bay. You know, if you check out Meetup.com, there are a number of celiacs who meet up on a regular basis. We oftentimes meet at Mariposa Bakery in Oakland. -
ARCHIVED Son, Gluten And Possible Seizures
rosetapper23 replied to regmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
At celiac conferences, mothers have often stated that their babies and toddlers with celiac disease were moody and clingy before going gluten free....and the staring "thing" has also been described. With celiac--and particularly in babies and children--the frontal lobes can be deprived of oxygen, causing neurological problems. You're a bright mom to have... -
ARCHIVED Dh On The Palm Of Your Hand?
rosetapper23 replied to cap6's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
At celiac conferences, the mantra is, "Just wait until she wants to get pregnant. Then, she will consider the possibility that she has celiac." This is what is stated every time someone shares that a young female relative refuses to get tested or do a trial of the gluten-free diet even though symptoms are obvious. If this argument doesn't work with your... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerant
rosetapper23 replied to skippy10564's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It takes just about three days for me every time I get accidentally "glutened." Fear not--you'll feel better soon! -
ARCHIVED Need Low-Carb, Nut Free Snack Idea's
rosetapper23 replied to Mizzo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Olives are always good....and even though she's low-carbing it, it doesn't hurt to have her pair cheese with slices of apple. Also, you can use deli slices of turkey or ham to roll around pieces of cheese. -
ARCHIVED Dh On The Palm Of Your Hand?
rosetapper23 replied to cap6's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Yes, my son and I both get DH on our palms (and the soles of our feet, too). My DH was actually triggered when my son was placed in Intensive Care when he was eight weeks old. I believe that stress played a part in triggering it. -
ARCHIVED Are These Celiac Symptoms?
rosetapper23 replied to djs895's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would like to add that perhaps what you have is not really acne; that it is, in fact, Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH), a blistering, itchy rash that some celiacs have. Oftentimes when it's found in places common for acne, the patient and/or doctor assumes that it is simply a bad case of acne. If you DO have DH, then you have celiac....and celiacs with DH... -
ARCHIVED 3 months gf - still having problems
rosetapper23 replied to Ms.frustrated's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You mention mayo--did you know that mayo now contains soy? They put soy in everything now! Many celiacs are intolerant of soy, so you might try eliminating it. BTW, it's found in most canned tuna, too, and in almost all salad dressings. The tuna from Whole Foods and Trader Joe's doesn't have soy in it, though. -
ARCHIVED Celiac, neuropathy, ataxia, small Motor Neuron And Muscle Fiber
rosetapper23 replied to CampbellS's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hmmm....yours seems like a difficult case. I've had muscle pain and neuromuscular complications all of my life, and I wasn't diagnosed until I was 47. I have two suggestions that have personally helped me. The first suggestion comes from the book "The Hidden Story of Cancer" in which the author describes how using a ratio of Omega 6s to 3s can fully oxygenate... -
ARCHIVED Visiting Usa Soon And Still Confused About Mcdonalds
rosetapper23 replied to amber's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Amber, You're welcome....and my daughter is a permanent resident of Australia--she lives in North Bondi, so I know how easy it is to eat gluten free there in Australia. I love your country! My daughter is currently visiting here for a few months, and she took an Aussie friend of hers to Vegas yesterday. Even though it's great having her home for a bit... -
ARCHIVED Visiting Usa Soon And Still Confused About Mcdonalds
rosetapper23 replied to amber's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I've been to Carl's Jr. restaurants all over California and have NEVER been glutened a single time. I always order the Star burger wrapped in lettuce with fries. I always let the manager know that I have celiac, and he/she usually makes the order for me (puts on gloves, places paper down on the counter, etc.). The ketchup for the burger and fries is also... -
I should have added that magnesium levels are tied closely to heart health, too, and the American diet is low in magnesium. Celiacs tend to have very low levels at times....so you should DEFINITELY consider getting a magnesium supplement. If you're worried about how it might affect your stomach, two brands are easy on the digestive system: Bluebonnett...

ARCHIVED Should I Throw My Food Out?
rosetapper23 replied to ShannonA's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with Karen--soy sauce is a liquid and should have washed off the roaster very easily. If you're still worried, just eat meat from the top portion of the turkey breast. -
All great advice given above! I just wanted to add that if you have ongoing problems with being Vitamin B12 deficient, 500 mcg a day seems VERY low. Usually, we're prescribed 2,000 mcg once or twice a day sublingually. Are you taking a sublingual tablet (the kind that dissolves under your tongue)? If not, this is definitely the type you SHOULD be taking...

ARCHIVED What Do You Guys Think Of My Diet?
rosetapper23 replied to Pegasus55's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Except for the almonds, you're missing healthy saturated fats, which are necessary for maintaining good health and for absorbing fat-soluble vitamins. In those vegetables, do you consume avocados? You don't mention dairy, so I don't know if you'd be willing to eat organic (and, hopefully, grassfed) butter and cheeses, but those are good sources of healthy... -
ARCHIVED Someone To Talk To
rosetapper23 replied to anwen98's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm sorry you're feeling so alone with your celiac! The Gluten Intolerance Group of North America has a program for teens where you can be put in touch with teens throughout the U.S. with celiac or gluten sensitivity. Here's the link to Teen Advocates with Gluten Sensitivities (TAGS): Open Original Shared Link You should find lots of support there... -
Your doctor should be checking your Vitamin B levels--especially B12 and folic acid. Heart palpitations are very common with low Vitamin B12, and you can take Methyl B12 sublingually. It's an over-the-counter supplement, very inexpensive, and immediately effective. BTW, all of your vitamin and mineral levels should be checked.

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Had Trouble With The Glatino Spinach Pizza?
rosetapper23 replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The only two diets I know of that can heal one's gut are 1) a natural diet with no processed foods whatsoever, and 2) the Primal/Paleo diet. If you're interested in the latter, the best book that I know of on this subject is "Primal Body, Primal Mind." The author can help you understand why you react to so many foods, and she can explain how vitamins and... -
ARCHIVED New Question About Dh Diagnosis
rosetapper23 replied to cindylou7's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Since your chances of getting a proper diagnosis for DH are about nil, why bother eating gluten and having a dermatologist mess up the biopsy? I have absolutely NO faith in dermatologists....and even though I've been a member of this forum for many years, I've seen very few people post here that have reported that their DH was confirmed by a dermatologist... -

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Had Trouble With The Glatino Spinach Pizza?
rosetapper23 replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I've eaten dozens of both the Glutino Cheese Duo and the Spinach and Feta pizzas, and I've never had an issue--ever. (And I'm very sensitive.) Are you sensitive to corn or rice or feta? -
ARCHIVED New Undiagnosed Issue
rosetapper23 replied to NewNicole's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I get tested through my GP. And has your doctor explained why you're having such a HUGE fluctuation in your TSH? It sounds as though you might have Hashimoto's (which does go up and down). If your GP is not an expert on thyroid, perhaps you can get a referral to an endocrinologist.
