  1. GoldyLocks, Welcome to the board! And please don't be too mad--you finally know what's been making you sick all of these years, and that's wonderful! I was mad when I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me for 47 years! Eating gluten free doesn't have to be difficult. At first, you should concentrate on eating only natural whole foods (though you...
  2. Your symptoms are very much in line with celiac, so I hope your doctor DOES order the correct and full celiac panel. Your bloodwork came back looking good, but I noticed that your cholesterol is on the low side and your triglycerides are on the high side, which tends to happen with celiac.
  3. I very rarely get glutened because I'm also extremely anal about it. You see, I suffer from Dermatitis Herpetiformis...and when I get glutened, the blistery rash lasts a nice, LONG time because I'm also on thyroid medication that contains iodine. As a result, the IgA antibody deposits stay active for a very long time, keeping the DH extremely active, too...
  4. With celiac, it's common to have malabsorption of hormones, such as testosterone. You might wish to get your hormone levels tested, as suggested above; however, it's also possible that you'll begin to absorb your hormones well within a short period of following a strict gluten-free diet. You might also have your zinc level checked, too, since it can affect...
  5. I know that you seem overwhelmed at the moment, but part of the problem is that you're anemic. Of course, you feel overwhelmed! Once your nutritional deficiencies have been resolved, you'll be able to think more clearly and have more energy to organize and plan your meals (for both your family and you). The advice above to eat primally is excellent....
  6. B12 is only one of the B vitamins, and I would highly recommend that you take a Co-Enzyme Vitamin B Complex, because ALL B vitamins are extremely important. If you're not absorbing B12, you may be having absorption problems with some or all of the rest of the B vitamins.
  7. You express yourself so extremely well, I hope you consider writing a novel while you await your government's decision....and, no, I'm not kidding! Please don't waste your writing talents! I used to teach writing at a private college, so I reocgnize excellent writing when I read it. You're very gifted...and I hope you explore all of the opportunities available...
  8. Don't forget to check out the recipes on marksdailyapple.com--you can download the recipe books for free (or order them in print for $$). Also, people provide their own recipes all the time. The Forum there is also awesome, and the people sound VERY intelligent. I've discovered that there are also meetup.com groups that are paleo/primal, and they always...
  9. I agree! (And I do mention magnesium deficiency frequently.) This is one of those minerals that Americans simply don't get enough of--our soil is almost completely depleted of magnesium. I usually recommend Bluebonnet liquid magnesium or Nature's Way Magnesium Complex because they're both gentle on the intestinal tract. Thanks for bringing up this...
  10. I read an article a few years back on the chances we take when we see certain warnings on a supposedly gluten-free product. The article stated that tests have shown that 70% of the products processed on equipment on which wheat products are also processed turn out to be cross-contaminated with gluten, and 30% of the products processed in a facility that...
  11. eatmeat4good, We could live happily as roommates--LOL!
  12. Laura, One of the best things about the paleo/primal diet is that the fat in your middle is what disappears first! I'd always had trouble losing that darned muffin top, but it just melted away on this diet. It was amazing! Also, regarding vegetables, the secret is to poor melted organic butter all over them (so decadent!) or melt cheese on top-...
  13. Yes, they're definitely gluten free, and I've been using their shampoos and creme rinses for years. I love them all! Whenever I want to change things up, though, I use EO (essential oil) products. Both brands are wonderful.
  14. I agree with the others....but, after being checked out, if the doctors find "nothing" wrong, it's important to know that ingestion of gluten can cause reduced blood-flow (oxygen) to the frontal lobes of the brain. This was only discovered a few years ago and accounts for some of the neurological symptoms suffered by people with celiac. And, yes, it could...
  15. The supporting element that this episode may NOT be due to gluten contamination is that the supplements you took afterwards did little or nothing to help the situation when they've helped in the past when you've been glutened. This leads me to believe that it was something else that bothered your system. I know what you mean about those samplings at gluten...
  16. Is there any chance that you're sensitive to soy? If I were to have such a bad reaction to a processed product, that would be my first suspicion. Also, is it possible that special gums or unusual ingredients may have been used that would bother your gut? If none of the above apply, thank you for alerting the rest of us of the potential danger.
  17. I have only positive things to say about the primal/paleo diet. Mark Sisson is wonderful, and I oftentimes visit his site, marksdailyapple.com. His site includes many yummy recipes that I've personally tried. The BEST book I've read on this topic is "Primal Body, Primal Mind" by Nora Gedgaudas. She is really down on gluten and does an excellent job of...
  18. MitziG, You are Wonder Woman--and I applaud you! With your perseverance, I think you may very well bring your daughter all the way back to good health.
  19. Thank you for your detailed responses, but those responses have made me think a bit. You express yourself EXTREMELY well, and you seem patient, understanding, and analytical. These skills are desperately needed in Sydney right now. My daughter lives in North Bondi and works in Sydney (I visit her every year and LOVE Australia), and her company has had...
  20. Gee, I think I'd fire the lot of them! Yes, your poor daughter shouldn't have to continue to suffer. Ferritin levels do not decrease for no reason, and the usual reason is celiac disease. After firing your doctor(s), though, you'll need to find a way to boost your daughter's ferritin level because it can take six months to 18 months for her ferritin level...
  21. All the advice you've received has been excellent...and I sometimes feel as you do. People socialize around food, and even though I'm fine with going to potlucks and out to lunch, some people have shied away from me over the years because I think they wonder, "Why should I invite her? She can't eat the food." Now I know which friends are truly friends...
  22. I think Glutino makes a cracker that is like a cheese-flavored Ritz cracker. Another great cracker line is Crunchmaster, which can be found with the regular crackers. There are several varieties (though I don't think there's a cheese one); however, they're VERY tasty...and perhaps you could send a plastic bag with some cheese slices for her to place on...
  23. Your post made me very sad. I feel that your university failed YOU and not the other way around. They poisoned you! Your tuition and room/board $$ should all be returned to you, and they should send a letter of apology. Of course, this is the real world....and you'll never see these things, but please know that that would be the RIGHT and FAIR thing for...
  24. Okay, I think it's very possible that your children are, in fact, suffering from either celiac or food sensitivities. However, with the symptoms you've described, I just need to mention the following possibilities: water issues (could there be something in the water?), carpet shampoo issues (do you shampoo your carpets frequently...and do the children crawl...
  25. Actually, I'm baffled, too! I don't know why paprika and certain peppers set me off when they're supposedly gluten free.
