  1. It may be the drug that is causing the worsening symptoms....or the symptoms may be caused by the worsening of the Lyme Disease. My daughter had it years ago, and while she was taking Doxycycline, her symptoms continued to worsen (joint pain, headaches, stomach issues, and fatigue). After she finished taking it, I insisted that she be prescribed a higher...
  2. Yes, glutamine can be very helpful for healing the gut. However, it has been implicated in exacerbating cancer or causing it to recur in a few studies. I used to take glutamine faithfully because it made my digestive system work optimally; however, since I suffer from recurrent cancer (and currently am suffering from metastatic cancer), I stopped using...
  3. Hopefully, a number of people will jump in with suggestions, but, in the interim, I'll take a stab at this. For a lot of us, healing takes a long time. My digestive complaints took a full 18 months of strict compliance with the gluten-free diet. That said, many people react poorly to a number of foods while they're healing, as though their immune system...
  4. Okay...Dani helped me with a link that I can share with you. This photo is not for the weak of heart--it might even scare small children. My photo shows many scars from a glutening on my face and neck that occurred more than four months ago, but which have continued to re-erupt due to the iodine in my thyroid medication. I think the episode is reaching...
  5. Dani, I sent you a private e-mail (hope that was okay!), and in it I explained that I'm officially diagnosed with celiac, and my gastroenterologist told me that if he had seen my lesions even before diagnosing me with celiac, he would have told me that I had DH and was most certainly a celiac. My son gets these same lesions in the same locations when...
  6. I agree with Skylark--start supplementing NOW rather than wait for your doctor's slow (and possibly uninformed) advice. Most doctors have no idea how to address nutritional deficiencies, and you must learn to be your own best advocate. After a glutening, you'll notice any ill effects within about a month--match those symptoms to deficiencies and begin there...
  7. I'd like to upload a photo of my current (and severe) DH outbreak on my face and neck to show what the scarring can look like, but I don't know how to upload photos. How is this done? The photo is on my iPhone and filed in my download file on my computer. Any help?
  8. Ha ha--Skylark, we responded nearly at the same time and with almost the same information! Hopefully, a B complex vitamin, sublingual B-12 (methyl), and a magnesium/calcium supplement will ease this poster's symptoms.
  9. Geez, what a predicament! All I can suggest is sniffing some scents that naturally calm your nerves, such as vanilla, lavender, or lemon. Heck, maybe those rude people should sniff some, too!
  10. While celiacs oftentimes develop other autoimmune diseases, I think your symptoms may be attributable to nutritional deficiencies. The symptoms you describe could mean that your recent glutening might have damaged the part of your small intestine that absorbs B vitamins. Burning, irritated eyes (even photophobia) can be caused by Vitamin B deficiency (especially...
  11. Yes, I was done with doctors, too, when everyone missed an obvious diagnosis. I still don't trust them (except my oncologist) and would much rather deal with chiropractors and integrative medicine doctors. And dermatologist? Don't get me started! I think you're on the road to recovery--just eat clean, and I think you'll be fine.
  12. I thought I'd just ask, are you taking any vitamins or supplements at the moment? Sometimes multi-vitamins have caused constipation for me, especially if they contain iron. Just a thought...
  13. Many of us with celiac can't eat soy--I feel almost the same after eating soy as I do gluten. There are actually a lot of gluten-free products out there that don't use soy. Most breads don't contain it, and I'm careful to read the labels on waffles, cookies, etc. Be careful of soy in canned tuna, mayonnaise, and salad dressings. The tuna at Trader Joe...
  14. Although your son's situation sounds more serious than my own children's occasional refusal to eat, my remedy was to tell each child that if they didn't want to eat what I had prepared, they had to make their own meal. This usually played out quite well, because they enjoyed being "big" and were allowed to be creative in preparing their meals. However,...
  15. Is there any possibility that you might be having thyroid issues? Hypothyroidism (also Hashimoto's) can cause both constipation and fatigue. I'm just throwing this out....
  16. However, SOME bacon does contain gluten (the flavored and smoked kind sometimes does). You're probably safe, though. As for a little cheese and butter, those aren't bad for you. Butter, in particular, as long as it's organic, is considered a healthful saturated fat that your body needs to process fat-soluble vitamins. You did well!! I wish I had such...
  17. It's really hard to determine what you have from the photos. If it's folliculitis, it doesn't seem red enough to me. Usually that's caused by staph--what antibiotic was prescribed? Only certain antibiotics work against staph (usually Keflex or Erethromycin). Also, unless you pressed your armpit against something that contaminated it, folliculitis usually...
  18. The description of your rash is spot-on for DH! If you feel better being gluten free, continue with the diet and chuck the doctors. You may wish to know that you'll need to eliminate iodine, too, for a few months (or until the rash completely goes away), because DH generally needs both gluten and iodine to occur. This means that you'll need to avoid iodized...
  19. I love these types of positive postings! However....I hope you checked to make sure that both the bacon and the hashbrown casserole were gluten free. Frozen hashbrowns (if that's what they used) can contain gluten due to flour being used during the freezing process. Hopefully, you DID check...but I realize that you're new to this diet, and these items...
  20. Hmmm....it might be shingles, or it might be Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH). Both are "herpeslike" in their presentation in that the tissue around and underneath the lesions is also affected. If it's shingles, you'll know soon enough, and if it's DH, good luck finding a doctor who is able to biopsy it correctly. I think, in this case, only time will tell...
  21. Eatmeat4good, Thanks for the personal reply--I hadn't expected to say anything, but I just had a chemo treatment, and afterwards I tend to feel despondent. Every time I look at the recent DH scars on my face, I'm reminded of how one misstep (glutening) caused my world to change forever. Back on topic, though...you're right. My son and I both get DH...
  22. eatmeat4good, That certainly explains why my DH "awoke" and completely destroyed my face and neck after I got glutened--it's been only eight years since I went gluten free. This horrible flare-up may be my last--my previously localized breast cancer metastasized to my lymphatic system only weeks after the accidental glutening, and my oncologist believes...
  23. Yes, to me it DOES look like DH, and the fact that you're also having gastro distress backs up the possibility that you have celiac. Now, regarding the testing (and Squirmingitch, you're dear to me, but I don't agree with you on this one thing), if you can't see a gastro for some time because the referral process is slow, I would personally give up eating...
  24. My favorites: Me: No muffin for me--I can't have wheat. Server: Oh, then you can have the blueberry muffins--they're only made of blueberries! Me to yet another server: Do you know what kind of flour is used in your ______? Server: It's white flour. Yes, apparently, flour is made of only one thing: flour.
  25. I've been reading this forum for years, and I haven't read a single posting (except mine) where a poster mentioned that eliminating iodine ALONE could control DH. However, I'd like to point out that it doesn't appear that anyone ever made the connection whatsoever to iodine before discovering that gluten was also the culprit. Therefore, no one did what...
