I wish they would do more studies on DH--the textbooks simply have all the "facts" mixed up...and in most cases absolutely incorrect. Yes, DH CAN present symmetrically, but it has been my own personal experience (and that of my son) that it can also present in a way that is NOT symmetrical. As for the DH on my face and neck, the symmetry can be uncanny...

ARCHIVED Epic Story - Any Advice Appreciated
rosetapper23 replied to kmccormick61583's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Kyle, I do think that you've probably stumbled onto what may actually be at the root of your problems: celiac. As I'm sure you've read from your research, neurological problems, tooth problems, sinus problems, and digestive problems are very common with celiac. Regarding your teeth, many of us are born with defective tooth buds, so our teeth don't form... -
ARCHIVED Don't Even Know What To Title This...
rosetapper23 replied to livelifelarge24's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Only you can make that determination....and I understand how hard choices regarding medications have to be made sometimes. You might try taking Co-Enzyme B Complex by Country Life to see if you can get some of the symptoms to abate. Although Thiamin deficiency might not be the problem (again, this was based only on my research at an old-fashioned library... -
ARCHIVED Don't Even Know What To Title This...
rosetapper23 replied to livelifelarge24's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Okay, the symptoms you describe dovetail EXACTLY with those that I suffered when taking a low-dose birth control pill that I took many years ago before I even knew I had celiac. Every single one of your symptoms happened to me--and the cramps and diarrhea that began after the other symptoms started (especially poor memory, difficulty sleeping, the compulsion... -
I would just like to add to the discussion that many of us with celiac cannot tolerate soy. You mentioned that you'd like to keep that in your diet....but you might wish to rethink that.

ARCHIVED If You've Had Dh While Gluten-Free...
rosetapper23 replied to lizk's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It could be that you are eating minute amounts of gluten still (from CC). It doesn't take much to activate the DH. And, yes, I think what you have may, in fact, be DH. As for the soft stools, it took 18 months being gluten free for me to get past that. What finally helped me in that regard was a product called Metagenics UltraClear Sustain Medical Food... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Hair Loss
rosetapper23 replied to alimore33's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
First, you should be tested for thyroid problems (perhaps your doctors already have?), because an underactive or overactive thyroid can be a cause for hairloss, and many of us suffer from thyroid conditions. However, if the hairloss is truly a result of nutritional deficiencies, you might consider taking a B complex vitamin that contains biotin, chelated... -
My kitties prefer a dry food that contains wheat, so I use a scooper--no contamination, as a result. As long as you don't physically touch the food, there should be no contamination.

ARCHIVED Growing After Gluten Free Diet...is It Too Late?
rosetapper23 replied to ImWithStupid's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Okay, I think I know the answer to this particular question. My son, who has celiac, was projected to be between 6'5" and 6'8" inches, but his celiac was triggered at 11 just as he entered puberty. Until then, he'd been at 110% of the population, but then he began to fall behind. He was finally diagnosed with celiac a month before his 16th birthday, and... -
Old Hag Syndrome / Sleep Paralysis
rosetapper23 replied to nb-canada's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, I've been plagued with "sleep paralysis" for all of my life, but--come to think of it--it got much worse when my celiac worsened 15 years ago....and, by golly, I hadn't noticed that it hasn't happened since I've gone gluten free. Imagine that! I wonder if it's yet another neurological problem caused by celiac. You bring up an interesting point. ... -
ARCHIVED What To Eat!? I'm Going Crazy :(
rosetapper23 replied to CeliacFashionista's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You can eat all See's candies except those that have hard frosting on them (like Easter eggs). That means everything in the display case is fine to eat. My favorite is the Butterscotch Square. Nestle's chocolate chips are gluten free as are Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey Bars, and a lot of Trader Joe's chocolates. Actually, there are quite a few... -

ARCHIVED Eaten Gluten By Accident - Symptoms?
rosetapper23 replied to Caroline1972's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's possible that you were glutened--a study on this subject stated that when equipment is used for both gluten and gluten-free products, there is a 70% chance of contamination. If the manufacturer only produces the product in a facility that also produces gluten-containing products, then there is a 30% chance of contamination. So....you may have been... -
ARCHIVED What Kind Of Doctor . . . .
rosetapper23 replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Good luck on both scores. It is rare to find a dermatologist who knows how to correctly biopsy for DH (the clear skin next to a lesion and not directly on it), but if you're lucky enough to find one and then test positive for DH, there's no reason to see a gastro. If you have DH, you have celiac....so all you have to do is follow a gluten-free diet from... -
ARCHIVED Tom O'bryan & Cyrex Laboratories
rosetapper23 replied to Feral Boy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have no experience with Cyrex Labs, but I know a number of people on this forum do. All I know about Dr. O'Bryan is that he has been a lead presenter at a number of national conferences of the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America. I've heard him speak twice and have found his presentations to be very informative, and he cites studies. I'm not surprised... -
ARCHIVED Acne From Gluten?
rosetapper23 replied to CeliacFashionista's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I agree with Peter that you probably have DH, because two of its hallmarks are that it takes a while for the lesions to heal and then they leave awful scars. From people's descriptions here on the Forum, some people's DH doesn't itch as much as others'. I also get it on my face, and it looks and feels a lot like cystic acne. I was diagnosed with that for... -
It was very difficult for about two years, because, as the thyroid slowly died, my medication had to be adjusted up and down. Sometimes I would become hyperthyroid and then bounce back to being hypothyroid. Now that I know the symptoms of both, I can usually detect when I need to adjust my meds. Even after five years, it sometimes still becomes an issue...

ARCHIVED No Weight Loss After Being Gluten Free 10 Months
rosetapper23 replied to SarahJimMarcy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, unfortunately, weightloss does not go hand in hand with a gluten-free diet. Oftentimes gluten-free foods that are processed have a lot of unhealthy ingredients in them. If you're eating a whole-food diet, though, just be sure that you are getting enough healthy saturated fats. A lot of people are afraid to eat them because they equate eating fat with... -
Yes, I had thought the same....but I didn't develop Hashimoto's until after I'd been strictly gluten free for three years.
-
Geez....you're experiencing a lot of symptoms. All I can say is that Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (which affects quite a few people with celiac, including me) can present with a sore throat, fatigue, joint pain, foggy thinking, and dry eyes. Also, it can cause constipation. It can come on suddenly because the thyroid will produce enough hormone, and then, all...

ARCHIVED This Itch Is Driving Me Crazy !
rosetapper23 replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I agree that there are MANY products that contain gluten that you may be unaware of: lipstick and other cosmetics (and shampoos, etc.), supplements, medications, oats (unless certified gluten free), frozen hash browns, condiments, soups and broths, chips, etc. Also, it is important to know that for many people, once they go pretty much gluten free, they... -
I'm sorry to hear that it takes so long to see a doctor. When you attempt to get an appointment, please stress that you're experiencing muscle weakness upon exertion that worsens the more you exercise. Hopefully, they'll wake up and schedule an appointment soon. Good luck! And please let us know what happens, okay?
-
You're welcome! But, please, see a doctor if you can--the muscle weakness you describe is very worrisome.

ARCHIVED This Itch Is Driving Me Crazy !
rosetapper23 replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It certainly sounds like DH, and if it is, then you definitely have celiac disease, which is at the root of many (if not all) of your ills. As the poster above mentioned, you'll need to cut way back on iodine until you get a handle on this rash, and you'll need to be extremely stringent about following a gluten-free diet. You can certainly get a biopsy... -
