  1. Rats! I just got back from Sydney and didn't access the Internet while I was visiting....so I didn't know about the Thai food! However, I DID stop in at Churrasco,. a Brazilian restaurant in downtown Sydney, and was astounded that their menu was largely gluten free. The cheese bread and pasta that are served are also gluten free. I lived in Brazil for...
  2. The limb numbness you're referring to has a name: paresthesia. It's sometimes caused by a deficiency in phosphorus. It sounds to me that you're having an overall malabsorption problem.
  3. Okay, I have to admit that I don't have experience with a child who has had bladder issues due to dairy or gluten sensitivity. However, my grown daughter (who I believe DOES have celiac, but she refuses to get tested) had issues at the same age. About that time, I read a book written by a female urologist who suggested that some immature bladders cannot...
  4. I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so bad right now. Regarding your neuropathy, yes, it can be caused by iron anemia....or even possibly low B Vitamins, especially B12. If you are, in fact, low in any of these nutrients, it could be that you're unable to absorb them right now. Therefore, I would recommend that you see your doctor first, and your doctor...
  5. I find Dr. Peter Green's book very helpful for people who want to learn about celiac and the gluten-free diet: "Celiac: The Hidden Epidemic."
  6. Ha ha! I meant kissing dear old Aunt Mabel or Granny Smith--the kind that wears bright red lipstick. Yes, you can only be so careful. After I've touched a grocery cart or someone else's phone or keyboard, I always wash my hands before I touch my face. However, sometimes it's hard to remember. Good luck to you!
  7. Personally, yes, I would react to a soap that contains oat. If I touch wheat or gluten in any form, my hands itch and I break out in a rash on both forearms (but it's not DH). My DH has cleared up, and I haven't had an outbreak in quite a while because I'm extremely diligent about eating gluten free. Do you ever kiss anyone who is wearing lipstick? ...
  8. ...what Skylark said. Please listen to her.
  9. Just want to add that most dermatologists have no idea how to biopsy a lesion for DH testing. He/she must NOT biopsy the lesion itself, or the biopsy will be negative. The biopsy must occur on CLEAR skin adjacent to a lesion to be properly tested for DH. You might do some research online and print out the instructions for correctly biopsying a DH lesion...
  10. Everyone is different when it comes to exposure to gluten. You'll need to find out from experience what causes reactions. By the way, the description that you gave of not being aware of where you are in space? That indicates that you might be having proprioception problems and can indicate a Vitamin E deficiency. I've suffered from this symptom for...
  11. From your description, it doesn't sound as though your B12 is a problem at this time. However, social drinking can cause low folic acid and potassium levels. Perhaps you should have the levels of these nutrients tested (?). Also, has your thyroid been tested? A failing thyroid can cause extreme fatigue, and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is very common in celiacs...
  12. Against the Grain Gourmet baguettes--my favorite! I'm on the Primal Diet from Monday through Friday, but I cheat a bit on the weekends....and these baguettes are sooo worth cheating for!
  13. If you have DH, then you have celiac disease. While not everyone with celiac disease has DH, everyone with DH has celiac. There's no need for you to do a gluten challenge if you truly believe you have DH; however, you might wish to have some clear skin adjacent to a lesion biopsied by a dermatologist to make sure that what you have is DH. If your dermatologist...
  14. I don't know if this is true for you, but this is one of the fist signs for me when I've been glutened. It can be caused by the very smallest amount of contamination....and sometimes is the ONLY sign. It was my "mystery pain" for at least five years before I was diagnosed with celiac. Also, for acquaintances of mine who mentioned this particular pain,...
  15. In addition to iodized salt, iodine can be found in some dairy products (depends on where you live in the U.S.), especially soft cheeses, seafood, and asparagus. Make sure that you avoid any salty foods (french fries, chips, crackers, nuts, etc.) and foods with carageenan (which comes from seaweed). Believe me--if you handle the iodine problem, the DH...
  16. It's quite possible that your husband DOES have celiac disease. It's not uncommon for celiacs to be attracted to other celiacs (I say this because I've observed couples at celiac conferences who found out after they were married that they each had celiac). Dr. Peter Green presented an Italian study at a Gluten Intolerance Group conference a few years ago...
  17. I would suggest that your ferritin level, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, and Vitamin D be checked, at the very least.
  18. So, so sorry to hear about your rotten day...and the rotten job. Since you're a server, I'm wondering if flour in the air or touching food that contains gluten (and then touching something that you put in your own mouth) might be causing your symptoms. Since you believe you have DH, have you tried avoiding iodine? For many of us, iodine is the real trigger...
  19. Yes, all vitamins, especial D, Folic Acid, and B12. You should also get your ferritin level checked as well as thyroid.
  20. I recently experienced a deficiency of B12 and felt as though I couldn't breathe. I would wake up several times a night gulping for air, and during the day I just dragged around. Your symptoms fall in line with a B12 deficiency, and although I don't believe in supplementing when it's not necessary, it wouldn't hurt you to buy some sublingual B12 to see...
  21. I agree that it's better to just plan interesting, gluten-free dinners for your family. When I lived with my husband and son (we're separated now), if my husband was really craving pizza, he'd order one for himself, and I'd plan something else for my son and me, since we couldn't eat it. When my son moved out, I would pull out a frozen individual-sized...
  22. Takala, You are SO right! One Christmas Eve, I hosted a small family party at a well-known restaurant. I had explained my concerns about gluten, and the waitress went back to speak to the "chef" about a particular menu item that looked like the only thing I could eat. She assured me that the chef said that there was absolutely no wheat or gluten in...
  23. I attribute my own vision problems to my difficulties associated with Vitamin A--I don't think I absorb it well, and it's too inflammatory for me to take as a supplement. If there's too much white around me outside(like tents at a craft show), I become dizzy and feel blinded. For me, Vitamin A deficiency has caused night blindness since I was 11 and sensitivity...
  24. You might consider cutting out prepared gluten-free foods at first. Sometimes the xanthan gum and guar gum can cause cramping and diarrhea. I used to be able to eat foods that contain them, but I've become more sensitive over time. I notice the problems most when a lot of one of these gums is used. For the most part, I've adopted a grain-free diet and...
  25. Have they tested him for H. Pylori yet?
