  1. I cannot recommend ANY of Trader Joe's supplements. There are a number of good gluten-free supplements that can be purchased at health food stores, such as NOW, Bluebonnet, and Nature's Way. They specifically list that they contain no gluten. Some people on this forum have been glutened by Trader Joe's supplements.
  2. I can recommend NOW Methyl B12. My doctor has me taking 2000 mcg in the a.m. and p.m., and my B12 levels test better now than when I was getting injections.
  3. For bread, I've found that if I keep the loaf in the freezer and take out a couple of slices, all it takes it to place them in a plastic sandwich bag and place them in a warm location. The BEST place is the front passenger seat--no kidding! The bread is perfect by lunch time and is soft and warm. I found this out by accident when I left my bread in the...
  4. Personally, I would consider Sydney, Australia. You could also spend some time in Cairnes (snorkeling, walking through rainforests, and eating gluten-free offerings at various restaurants). In Australia, you can order gluten-free pizza, sandwiches, and hamburgers as well as gluten-free High Tea. I've been there twice and was never glutened. Almost every...
  5. You're smart to consider your baby during this difficult time. Yes, by all means, STOP eating gluten ASAP if you think you may be pregnant, and, as suggested above, find out for sure if you are, indeed, pregnant. Even though the celiac panel was negative, false-negatives are common....and if you have celiac, you can be having problems absorbing hormones...
  6. I agree--Bluebonnet is a good supplement manufacturer, and I've used a number of their products. Currently, I take a Vitamin D supplement (50,000 iu) from a compounding company, and it also has never given me any cc trouble. By the way, 5,000 iu on a monthly basis is an extremely low dose. Many of us take 10,000 iu daily....and now I'm forced to take...
  7. I agree with Peter--I think celiac is a disease that doesn't discriminate. In our family, it affects men as equally as it does women. As far as DH, it also equally affects both genders in our family. I believe that celiac is under-reported in both men and women but that men might just not go to the doctor as often as women do.
  8. I had a feeling you might be here in California--I'm also in the S. F. Bay Area (Martinez in Contra Costa), and I know about the iodine 131 poisoning. Back when I was suffering terribly from DH in my early 30's, I had to give up all dairy to get rid of the iodine, but I was able to add in organic dairy after a few years. Unfortunately, my thyroid failed...
  9. I think you may have just solved your mystery! Your symptoms are definitely consistent with celiac or gluten sensitivity. My eyes get swollen, and I get feverish, too, when I've accidentally ingested gluten. Of course, the diarrhea followed later by constipation is also a problem as is the joint pain, muscle pain, bone pain, headache, stuffy nose, and...
  10. Your experience pretty much parallels my own except that I don't get the flat, large, disc-shaped type. However, I do get the first two types you described, and I get them on my face, neck, the sole of one foot, and on one hand. Since you're new to DH, I'm wondering if you know to also eliminate iodine from your diet for a while. With many of us (if not...
  11. Mushroom is right--try to get another doctor! Muscle and joint pain are my worst symptoms and have been for my entire life. A physical therapist and an orthopedist both freaked out when they first felt my muscles--they both said they were the tightest muscles, ligaments, and tendons they'd ever felt in their careers. The orthopedist actually asked me what...
  12. Since you don't mention any food sensitivities that your new in-laws might have, I wouldn't worry about telling them that your rolls are gluten free. However, just in case, I would do as the poster above suggested and have your hubbie bring some "regular" rolls if people notice that yours are "different." If even one person inquires as to why the consistency...
  13. Same here--one co-worker always makes cookies for everyone in the office, but she always gives me a small box of my favorite See's candies instead. Another co-worker changed to making fudge a few years back so that I could receive something yummy to eat, too...and she's one of my few friends who is careful enough not to cc me.
  14. Okay, there are probably many good Mexican food recipes, but my favorite is one that, while traditional, is probably not recognized as a Mexican recipe. However, I found it in a traditional book of Mexican recipes, and it has always been a favorite for company. It's called Chicken in Orange Sauce, and it is WAY easy to make. 10-12 chicken tenders or...
  15. Thanks, Love2travel! I forgot about the salt! My friends had both mentioned it, but I'd forgotten.
  16. AussieAmanda, Two things that you should know: First, what you've been told about breast cancer not hurting is simply not true. I speak from experience when I say that my breast cancer DID hurt. It's a fallacy that actually doctors continue to perpetuate--several doctors told me that breast cancer isn't painful. However, depending on the type, it can...
  17. Okay, this may sound weird...but a friend of mine used a mandolin slicer to slice patty-pan squash (you know, the light green-colored squashes that look like flying saucers) in thin slices instead of using lasagna noodles. He let the slices "sweat" on paper towels for a few hours before layering them, and he said the lasagna came out great. Another friend...
  18. I can only speak from experience. In my family, my son and I have DH, and my daughter (who doesn't have DH) has mouth ulcers.
  19. Yes, I agree--iodine may be playing a part in your son's continued breakouts. Absolutely remove any iodized salt from your home and be careful to feed him only foods that are low in iodine. As for my DH, it also lasts 6-8 weeks...and sometimes even 12 weeks. I don't know if scratching would cause it to last longer. For me, it was the constant peeling...
  20. Pricklypear, That recipe you provided is almost exactly the one I use myself! I took the recipe from my dear Scottish friend and then incorporated the ingredients from my favorite shortbread cookies from Australia (they use 100% butter, and the brand is called "Butterfingers"). After just a couple of tries, they came out great! Thanks for sharing this...
  21. It sounds as though she's eating something that is also sensitive to, such as dairy, soy, corn, etc. Has she tried an elimination diet? Many people on this board are sensitive to dairy (though, luckily, I'm not) or soy, and digestive complaints, pain, and fatigue are most often reported. Many of us are also sensitive to iodine, so you might try switching...
  22. I understand your frustration....but I'm so afraid of being glutened, I don't care how embarrassed I feel or how hurt the host/hostess is by my refusal to eat something. I broadcast regularly to all of my friends and co-workers that I will NOT eat anything they bake or cook because I don't expect them to understand the intricacies of how to prepare something...
  23. Yes, I think if you can contact the lab that makes the pill to find out if it contains gluten, you should be fine. You'll just need to assure the nurse that you're aware that you might not be "protected" enough to have sex and that you'll use another form of birth control when necessary. That might be the real reason for her concerns. I didn't know until...
  24. You know....we've all had the occasional pity party, so don't feel embarrassed for feeling down--especially at this time of year. My colleagues have been bringing in Xmas cookies every day, and I hate listening to everyone say how yummy they taste. However, I'll be making my own gluten-free Xmas cookies on Sunday, and I know they'll be as good as--if not...
  25. It sounds as though your two boys handled this event with maturity--bravo! I'm so glad that they were both amenable to such an invasive exam...and I hope that the results will help you set a course that will keep them healthy (sounds as though you plan to do just that). As for the "wee" little problem, it was probably because saline had been dripping...
