ARCHIVED New And Already Emotionally Exhausted
rosetapper23 replied to Adalaide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Adalaide, Where do you live? There are a LOT of pizza joints and restaurants that offer good gluten-free pizza. As for frozen, Against the Grain Gourmet has a super pizza, and I even like the individual-sized pizzas made by Glutino. For cheap gluten-free crackers, the best ones are also the cheapest--Crunchmaster crackers--and you can find them in the... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Work....
rosetapper23 replied to dnshaussler's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My doctors insists on having me visit every six months, and then she always orders a full panel on my nutrients. This way, she caught my pernicious anemia before it became serious. -
ARCHIVED Painful Thyroiditis?
rosetapper23 replied to healthy-000's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, this is just the way my Hashimoto's thyroiditis started up. It was a very painful sore throat, and I felt as though I had a terrible flu. It took about six months to simmer down after I started on thyroid medication. I was told that it was because it was very inflamed. I had a PET scan after three months on the medication (for breast cancer, not... -
ARCHIVED New And Already Emotionally Exhausted

Many of us here definitely understand how you feel. Most of us had to live in a "mixed" home--I'm currently separated from my husband, so my new home is completely gluten free (the kitchen had been completely remodeled, so all the appliances have never touched gluten). I recall that it took me nearly two years to stop grieving for the foods I couldn't have... -
ARCHIVED Another Piece Of The Puzzle, 30 Years Late. Do I Laugh Or Cry?
rosetapper23 replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, Beebs--I can relate. My son had daily nosebleeds from the time he was two. One of my neighbors finally called me up when he was six and said, "So, hey, your son just bled all over my house. Does he have AIDS or something? The whole neighborhood wants to know." Geez...... And then my daughter had mouth ulcers and stomach pain throughout her entire... -

I agree with everything you've said! My son, who was diagnosed at 16, is indeed lucky and will not suffer my long-suffering fate. This is one of the silver linings.... -
ARCHIVED Another Piece Of The Puzzle, 30 Years Late. Do I Laugh Or Cry?
rosetapper23 replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ah, yes, the "lost" years. We all have them, it seems. My childhood Hellish experiences pretty much revolved around bone, joint, muscle, ligament, and tendon problems. I didn't have any stomach issues until my mid-40's. All through school, I was the kid who fainted all the time (from iron anemia), whose teeth broke, who had no energy, and who had to be... -

It might help if you join some celiac support groups in your area. The Gluten Intolerance Group of North America has a lot of local groups, depending on where you're located. Do you live in the U.S.? You can check their main website to see if you can find a support group in your area--www.gluten.net. Also, if you join the national group, they send you... -
ARCHIVED Daughter Diagnosed With celiac disease And Diabetic
rosetapper23 replied to xjrosie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
LOL--looks like eatmeat4good and I posted at almost the same time--and we said almost the same things! As for cereal, Cocoa Pebbles and Fruity Pebbles are naturally gluten free, and Chex and Rice Krispies can be found in gluten-free versions. Also, there are a lot of gluten-free waffles out there. -

rosetapper23 replied to xjrosie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Kinnickknick (or spelled something like that) makes great donuts in various flavors and different glazes. You can usually find them in the frozen food section of a healthfood store. They taste just like the donuts my mom used to make. Udi's makes really blueberry muffins and other types of muffins that have a consistency very similar to the real thing... -
ARCHIVED Me And Sister Feel Absolutely Terrible
rosetapper23 replied to Chalula88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm very concerned about both of you! There can be a whole list of culprits that are causing your symptoms. One might be that food sensitivities are causing nutritional deficiencies. Here is a good website that lists the symptoms of various nutritional deficiencies where you might compare some of your and your sister's symptoms. Open Original Shared... -
ARCHIVED Recovery From Being Glutened
rosetapper23 replied to englishrose's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Regarding finding out about tests for cross-reaction sensitivity, I know that Dr. Vikki Petersen on her website (you'll have to do a keyword search on her name)can be contacted about them. Her office is in, I think, Sunnyvale, California, but she may be willing to share the names of the tests she gives her own patients. -
ARCHIVED I Feel Overwhelmed And It's Only Day 1
rosetapper23 replied to KotaKate88's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Listen to Pricklypear--she's right on all counts. In the beginning, it really IS easier to cook with natural foods because you have less chance of getting glutened. Also, your body needs the nutrients from whole, natural foods. Check to make sure that your spices and seasonings are gluten free, though....and remember that soy sauce contains wheat. Use... -

ARCHIVED I Had Hoped To Never Return To This Place
rosetapper23 replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oops! I guess I've read a lot of literature indicating that it's the jejunum that's usually involved. So much for my biology! But, still, only two biopsies.... Since her all of her bloodwork was negative except for one that was mildly positive, I'm still leaning towards the possibility that she does not have celiac. The only way she can find out is... -
ARCHIVED I Had Hoped To Never Return To This Place
rosetapper23 replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Zus, I actually think differently than the other posters with regard to your predicament. First, I'm not 100% convinced that your negative biopsy means anything at all. Your formerly blunted villi might have been blunted for a reason other than celiac, and they've returned to healthy status for reasons having nothing to do with a gluten-free diet. Also... -
ARCHIVED Recovery From Being Glutened
rosetapper23 replied to englishrose's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I suspect that you ARE sensitive to one or more other things in your diet besides gluten. For many of us, soy is a BIG problem--bloating, pain, etc. Since you're a vegetarian, I assume that you get a lot of your protein from soy and dairy. If it turns out that you're sensitive to both dairy and soy, you may be facing a big decision regarding your diet... -
ARCHIVED The goodness in gluten - Hindustan Times
rosetapper23 replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Well, this was an extremely idiotic piece of "journalism." Not only does it attribute only tummy troubles to eating gluten (said nothing about nutritional deficiencies and the huge number of serious symptoms associated with celiac), it implies that eating gluten might be better for our mental health than not eating it. What complete nonsense! -
ARCHIVED Thyroid And Immunity Questions
rosetapper23 replied to Booghead's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I also have Hashimoto's, but my symptoms (before treatment) did not include neck itching. I felt as though I had a severely sore throat from the thyroid inflammation, felt extremely fatigued, experienced constant hot flashes, and had terrible brain fog. It took about six months on thyroid medication to lessen the thyroid inflammation, but the other symptoms... -

I totally understand about the torture of gym class--I hated and feared it throughout my school years. You're lucky, though--back then (in California) gym was required ALL semesters in high school, and there weren't any computers. Because of celiac, I had horrible bone and joint pain, extremely weak or too-tight muscles, and ligaments and tendons that ruptured... -
ARCHIVED Shouldn't We Be Better By Now?
rosetapper23 replied to Gluten Free Girls's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It sounds as though you might all be suffering from vitamin, mineral, and/or hormonal deficiencies. Your daughter with the thinning hair and dry lips should be checked for all deficiencies, especially B12, zinc, and manganese. If she hasn't been checked for diabetes, this should also be done since celiacs share a gene with diabetics. Doctors should alwayscheck... -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's gluten-free Cookies
rosetapper23 replied to silk's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, I found your posting on cc very interesting. It's possible that the bags of gluten-free cookies have somehow touched products containing gluten. These particular cookies can be found at my local TJ's above the freezer and next to the chocolates and nuts, and I believe they do this to keep them separated from gluten-containing products (but, then, who... -
ARCHIVED New To The Gluten-Free Lifestyle
rosetapper23 replied to goblue2014's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
For some people, it makes sense to get a diagnosis, but yours is one where I would side with the "don't bother to get tested" argument. Since you have relatives with celiac, have many of the symptoms associated with it, and your symptoms are abating on a gluten-free diet, there are doctors who would diagnose you based just on those factors. If you wish... -
ARCHIVED Fighting Upper Respiratory Infection
rosetapper23 replied to notme's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have good luck with taking 2000 mg of L-Lysine every day (in the a.m. and p.m.), olive leaf extract, and mullein tea. With regard to the L-Lysine and olive leaf extract, studies have shown that viruses can be fought off in half the time. Mullein tea helps to break up mucus. However, if you have a fever, you may have to see a doctor if you don't start... -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's gluten-free Cookies
rosetapper23 replied to silk's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, I like the chocolate creme brule cups, too! I haven't seen those particular cookies at my local TJ's, but I've tried their wonderful tasting gingersnap cookies. Unfortunately, though, they glutened me twice (yeah, I thought I'd try another bag, hoping that it had been something else that had glutened me). So...I got glutened twice out of four bags...
